GFCI receptacle for old sewing machine??

My wife uses a 1950's vintage Singer sewing machine that belonged to her mother and has used it so long that she doesn't want to replace it with a new one. It has a fabric and rubber insulated cord with only a 2-prong plug. I am sure the internal insulation is probably antiquated and not in very good shape, and I am afraid of her being shocked if the insulation breaks down somewhere like inside the motor or the foot controls and energizes the frame. The machine and a lamp and a clock radio are all 3 plugged into a power strip that has 4 outlets and a 15A breaker. If I replaced the wall receptacle that the power strip is plugged into with a 15A GFCI receptacle would it protect her in case that happened? Since the old sewing machine isn't grounded through the 2-prong cord would the GFCI instantly break the circuit if an internal live wire contacted the metal frame of the machine?
