Here are 2 new mushrooms and a palm tree stone I'm doing for my son and DIL.

Cute mushrooms. Where did you get the palm tree? Haven't seen that form before. What kind of stem w/you use for that one? Looks interesting.

Slow the creative people here have taught me well. The palm is thinset poured into a plastic palm tree party tray I found at GW. I try to remember when shopping, think outside the norm. I'm going to do the stem and coconuts in Van Gogh browns. The leaves in green glass tiles. I'm thinking to grout all in black. What do you think?

Many thanks to everyone for your contributions and experiences. I got some pine mulch and put the 'fines' in the bottom. I bought two bags of the Miracle Grow blend for Cactus, Palms & Citrus. It is VERY light. I think everyone gave great advice. Going to try this and see how it GROWS. We grew them outside in the ground in California, but I was just a kid. Mother and Grannie just stuck them in the ground. As far as I know they never did anything else except "drip" water them with gray water the first season. After that, they were on their own. Our date palms were gigantic and the dates were yummy. There were several other varieties, but I don't know what the others were. I do recall that Grannie sprayed them with the hose from time to time to wash off the dust. They loved it. Having palms in the house makes me feel like I am home again. (Oh...those childhood memories). As for the size of the new pot, I got an emerald green ceramic Lotus pot and put it on a black wrought iron plant dolly with a clear plastic drip tray underneath. That will make it handy for moving when I clean the floors or rearrange things. The pot is about 4 inches bigger around in diameter, and in depth, it's about 1/3 deeper than the container it came in, so I think it is "joosta" - just right for the pot upgrade. The color is beautiful with the green palm fronds. One thing I did forget to ask, though. Should I cover the top of the soil with a little bit of the bark fines or the potting mix or both? I don't want to suffocate it since I know they need to breathe, but it does look a bit exposed on the surface. Thanks for your help, Palm lovers. ~Annie

Thanks for the information. Its good to know that its just fungi and can be dealt with. I'll be sure to loosen the top soil in all the affected pots. I feel much better now. The rain also brought out the little caterpillar looking worms. They are voracious eaters. I found them before they did too much damage. I sprayed the palms with volk oil, and that seems to have taken care of that problem. As far as what I'm going to do with the palms, I'll probably sell most of them. It all started with my just wanting to see if I could germinate a few seeds I gathered from a tree in my front yard. I thought it would be nice to have some smaller palms in decorative pots which could later be planted in the yard. I had heard that it was difficult to germinate the seeds and that it was a lengthy process. With that information, my expectations weren't too high and would have been happy just to be able to have a few germinate. I was in for a surprise. When 70 plus germinated, I decided to plant them all in little plastic cups not knowing if they would all actually mature into plants. Well, to my surprise they did.....lol. I guess somewhere along the way I developed an "emotional attachment" to them and felt a responsibility to nurture them along and watch them develop to their full potential. I think they'll continue to do great if the hurricanes stay away. I've also branched out and have a crop of about 40 sagos now. I love gardening and my little "crops" provide me with a lot of enjoyment. Thanks again for the information of the fungi!

Well, I was hoping someone else would address this, and hopefully we can rule out one possibility. If not, I'm afraid it is fatal. When you say mushrooms attached to the trunks, we need to look at the possibility of a disease called Ganoderma. Read the article written by the University of Florida and look at the pics and get back to us.Hopefully not Ganoderma, but it does attack trees the age of yours. Please let us know if it compares. It's strange that it didn't collapse earlier. Is there a chance it got hit by lightning? I lost 6 tall coconuts to a single lightning strike. They were at least 2 to 3 times the height of your palm. The tops were "jellied" and took a while to fall. Some other shorter plants jellied and collapsed much sooner.

Way to go - my question on the stem should have read "w/you put the same kind of stems on as in the mushrooms? I LOVE black grout - seldom go wrong w/it.

What a clever idea! I'll never look at those cheesy plastic party trays the same way again....in fact, I better stop at GW on my way to work this afternoon!
Does the thinset dry hard and then you unmold it and then glue on top of it? Or just pour in the thinset and then start sticking on the tess? Did you put anything in the middle (i.e. pour some thinset...place wire mesh or whatever and then more thinset) for reinforcment?
Sorry for all the ?'s, but I think this is just too cool!
And your mushrooms are just the cutest!

Slow are you talking about the trunk og palm tree? If so it will be done in Van Gogh. Cindiloo I just put vaseline on tray and poured in thinset. I'm not a master at this so am hoping it will stay together. Left it in mold for a week. It set real hard. It sits on the flat side and I'm mosaicing the curvy side. Gluing hasn't been too bad yet. The test will come with the grouting. It may be a bear to do. Thanks for comments on mushrooms. I have a co-worker that wants some, so am trying to get a few different ones done so she will have a good choice.

Gosh, even I could find some party trays! I love this idea! Thanks for the post to show us and for telling us what you're doing here. It'll be fun to see it finished and to get a report on how it held up to grouting.
