Is there a fern growing on the trunk? (The green growth below the fronds.) The palm looks to be in bad shape.

I am of no help as to what happened, but I am sorry about your palm.

Time for an autopsy. See if you can pull the top apart. See if it's rotten up top, or if there's signs of insect damage. And the trunk where it bent over, is that rotten or eaten out?

It's strange that it didn't collapse earlier. Is there a chance it got hit by lightning? I lost 6 tall coconuts to a single lightning strike. They were at least 2 to 3 times the height of your palm. The tops were "jellied" and took a while to fall. Some other shorter plants jellied and collapsed much sooner.

Sometimes Ganoderma will only infect a dead or dying tree (there are a number of different Ganoderma species). I have some Ganoderma species here but so far they have only shown up on dead wood. There's nothing really you can do about it except grow resistant species.

30 years is not its lifespan..but maybe,all that fern growth kept the trunk too wet. Some tropical palms dont care..but Butia are semi tropical and from a drier climate. It might be better to keep the ferns off,and not let grass grow right up to the trunk.
