carpet to tile to carpet question

My mom is re-doing her kitchen and would like to put tile in her dining area. When you walk into her house you walk into a living room with carpet. She has a family room in the back of the house that you have to walk though the dining room to get to. She has always had carpet through the living room through the dining room and out the the family room it is all connected with a galley kitchen off to the right. Would it look strange to have tile in the dining room area? Then she would have carpet- tile - carpet?

Personally, I don't like wall to wall carpet in a dining area at all. I can understand why she would want to make a change. What kind of flooring is in her kitchen? Is is possible to do the same tile flooring in the DR and kitchen? Or, do wood flooring in the LR and DR? I would probably suggest the wood flooring if the rooms flow from one to the other. The family room would be ok left carpeted if the other space has continuity.

Her flooring in the kitchen is coming up she is undecided about flooring in there but what ever she does there I would like for her to do in the dining room. Not sure I can talk her in to hardwood in living room, kitchen and dining as she just got new carpet. She is the one that suggested taking the carpet up in the dining room. Our concern is the transition between the two the carpet and new flooring. Is it going to look like a big piece of tile or hardwood in the middle of two pieces of carpet?

I've looked into different tiles as well, and none that I've checked out required a pad...the padding, such as it is, is the backing of the tile. You may want to post this over on the flooring forum to get an answer to your 'tiles over acid stain' question.

It sounds like you have several issues: A) Squeeks B) Cold Floors C) Concern about floor level differences Regarding A, the builder is basically correct - 3/4 OSB is a building standard now. It is tongue and groove and glued down and together. Over time is will begin to squeek. You know where the squeeks are and when removing existing flooring, nail the subfloor tight again. Should eliminate, or at least reduce the squeek. Regarding B, See if you can have foam insulation injected into the cantilevered space. As to heating, it still may be necessary but why not minimize its burden by controlling the root cause. Regarding C, Several things here. Your current vinyl should be installed on a thin underlayment. Combined they are about 1/4" thick. It will be necessary to remove these. (This will be the time to inject foam insulation) A tile floor needs 1.25" minimum structural support which means a 1/2" thickness of concrete board will be cemented and screwed atop the existing subfloor. Then your heating mat followed by tile. So, you'll be gaining about 3/4" above the current level. Your tile shop will have a marble threshold with a beveled edge to minimize this effect. We have this same situation is our home and it is negligable. You may or may not have to trim the door. Base trim would be removed in the bath to do this work. It can then be reinstalled, replaced or have the tile setter install tile as base trim - that's what we did. " handymac, I'd appreciate it if you'd clarify your statements a bit more. Why do you think that "Using even a custom transition strip when the hard surface is higher than the carpet usually does not work well"? Do you mean that it becomes a trip hazard? Or is there another reason? Transition strips have to be stable---both sides have to have support. In the example above, the strip is supported by the hard surface, but will nor be supported by the carpet/pad sufficiently unless the strip compresses the carpet/pad quite a lot. That usually results in a squashed carpet look most folks do not like. By "So, you might wind up adding 3/4" to the carpeted areas just to get the heated floors in the baths" are you suggesting that we add underlayment before we re-carpet? If so, how do we address the differences at the stairs? Do we gradually raise the height of the top steps? I'd think we'd need to do something or else the top step will be 3/4" higher than all the others and that would be noticeable." Adding 3/4" under the carpet is what I meant. As for the stairs, I have seen a landing area(at the original floor height) done at the top of the stairs, maybe 4' by 3' and a transition strip used between the carpet and the landing area. Maybe solid surface flooring or vinyl tile. That minimizes the height difference at the top step and a 3/4" visual difference does not create a trip hazard.

Is your carpet and tile a gray color? I ask because I see your only color choices are aluminum or brass. Also, will there be a height difference between carpet and tile? If I had to choose I'd go with the Schiene since the Reno has a raised/angled edge. We had a similar problem where travertine met hardwood so we had a transition piece milled locally (couldn't find the correct ht premade) and then had BM custom match a stain to the travertine. Just throwing out other options! I would talk first to your carpet installer and ask how well they can finish the edges. Does she want to replace the carpet b/c of food spills that may occur in the DR? Since the carpet is new, maybe she should consider a nice area rug to go under the table that would be easy to clean and hide any spills that may stain. I couldn't see recommending anyone replace newly laid carpet. My budget conscience thinking says to live with it. Also, in my mind it would be a bit visually off to have the floor surface change in the middle. If two rooms in that area were the same it would be ok, but the tile/carpet sandwich would be odd.

Depends on how closed off the rooms are. Are all 3 rooms open to each other or are you going thru a doorway to access each room?

One of my previous homes had carpet thru-out except for tile in the kitchen. You could walk thru the DR to the kitchen then a large opening on the left of the breakfast area opened into the LR. Never had a visual problem with it, but it was broken up with doorways.
