I have the same question about the cold air. I like your inspiration pictures of surrounds for the inside, but doesn't look like you have room for much with the windows on each side.

Good questions! We are building on the Florida panhandle. Hot, the weather is hot here. The fireplace is designed to vent on thee outside side. Yes, we will have to compress our design because of the tight space.

The Heat n glo Twilight II fireplace is completely weather proof to protect the outside portion from the elements. It also weather-tested and hurricane-rated.

Yes, I am going to have to modify the above designs to fit that narrow space that I have to work with. I love stack stone and large format tile with a wavy appearance; almost like a sandy beach shoreline.

Hello KSWL, thank you for your input. The structures sticking out on the left and right are small knee walls that will provide some separation between the dining area and family room. Drywall is going up this week so I will soon update my photos. Thanks again!

My opinion would be to stick with the character of the rest of your house. If you have Coastal and Craftsman features, don't go too Contemporary or Formal. Both examples that you have posted. ;)

Besides the siding on the outside of your home, do you have any hard surfaces, like brick or stone? If so, match those instead of bringing in a third element.

We recently built an outdoor area for our home. I had my heart set on a stone fireplace, but the house is brick and stucco with a wooden screened porch. The more that I thought about it, the more I decided that bringing in another element was too much. Matching brick would be the way to go. I am so happy with my choice. We also have columns that mirror the columns on the inside of the house and painted to match the screened porch trim and stucco accents. A cedar wood pergola is stained to match the darker taupe of the majority of the stucco. All colors blend in with the brick.

If your house is all siding, then I would go with the stone. for inside and out. I believe that the plaster both outside and in, as shown in photos 2 and 3, would be too contemporary and formal for your home.

I like the interior stone and wood trim photo that you posted with the hearth, but sadly, you do not have room for that set up.

Another opinion...I'd take down the knee walls. You don't need them for a division. The one between the window is taking up valuable wall space. You can create a natural division between the dining and living space with your furniture. I know from experience.

We put a built-in in our living room, and I wanted it to have some character, so the middle section sticks out about 10 inches beyond to side sections. That middle section has become a thorn in my side and prevented a couple of different seating configurations that I would have much preferred in that room. The bump-out gets in the way. I think that your knee walls will narrow your walking space, getting around furniture, such as a sofa. Again, just my opinion.

Hello all, we are back to fireplace surround decision. We have realized that it is a small area and restricts our options to a degree.

Our place is a short walk to the beach and we want to have a fireplace that has a coastal look and feel. We looked at some quartz mosaic tile that we think would look nice. We are looking at two options:

1) Wrap the fireplace in the quartz mosaic and then top it off with a nice marble remnant mantel.

2) Extend the fireplace surround to the ceiling and cover the entire area with the quartz mosaic.

3) Our builder leans toward continuing the buildout to the ceiling and covering it in a shell covered tabby.

Other ideas are welcomed. We are posting a photo of the quartz mosaic that we are looking at. Thanks for your input!!!

I like the idea of the Mosaic better than I do the Tabby. I love a Tabby driveway, but cannot imagine it on my fireplace. Seems like anything with texture would be hard to dust.

We have selected a quartz mosaic that pulls in in a lot of our house colors, i.e. hickory floor and gray hardie siding.

We are going to cover both the inside and outside surrounds with this mosaic tile and then cap it with a beachy looking gray/brown cypress beam. On the exterior, we will continue the siding down each side of the surround to the wood deck.
