Moving Electrical panel Box

Hello everyone. I have a question about moving my panel box.

I want to have my box rotated 180 degrees so that it faces in the opposite direction. This is the box on the right side of the short wall

I want it to face the left side of the wall instead.

My question: approximately how many hours would it take the electrician to move the box?

I don't know what type of service panel it is, but I have a photo of the inside of it

I know there is no way to give a definite amount of time it will take (because of unforseen problems) but I would love to have an idea before I call for an estimate.

It should only take several hours for an electrician to disconnect the wires and rotate the box if that was all that was involved. However, it's hard to tell what all is happening in that box. For example, it looks like there are wires coming out of the bottom of the box that are going somewhere else, and there may also be some splices in the box that are not to code. How much these issues add to the time I can't say. Also, you are aware, aren't you, that the electrician will have to cut out sheetrock above and below the box to pull the wires through and then reinstall them once the box is turned? And you are getting a permit, right?

The other potential issue is that the wires on the left will enter the panel on the right (and vice versa) when the box is flipped. The wires may not be long enough to reach the same circuit breakers and may need to be extended, which will require extra time to complete.

I agree with kudzu9 that code violations would need to be corrected as part of this change, and could substantially impact the cost of the project.

Looks like a member company of Nordyne family of HVAC. Two ton condenser has been quoted. What size do you currently have including size of heat strip? I never ever recommend purchasing HVAC thru a big box store especially Sears. Usually a rip off. I would suggest getting a quote on a Trane or AmStd. I will not make a comment on your electrical service. Best to a qualified electrical company. Best practices say on a heat pump system, condenser, air handler, and strip electric heat should all be placed on separate circuits. IMO

Racket, you've got great eyes, LOL!!! I didn't even notice it. I'm laughing about your inspector comment, I deal with their lack of knowledge on code all the time. I've built quite a few pools for building and home inspectors, several of them were for chief inspecors of local small cities. I keep these chief's cell numbers in my cell to dial promptly when I have an encounter where I feel we're in the right, to discuss and describe what he feels isn't code compliant to his superior, and to let me do the same so hopefully I can avoid rework and a come back inspection. I'm not trying to take the builders side on the matter, I do agree it's to low and should be raised, but I really don't feel the average builder would do it for free unless his electrician ate the redo. His electrician should have opened his ayes, looked at the levels, and raised it higher during installation. I'd suggest asking the builder to drop on his knees to look at the service panel lights and then ask him to take you to his house so you can get the feel of how it works at his place. Trust me, if this install was at his house it would be getting raised for free just as yours should be handled too. See ya, Kelly

should have been obvious to contractor, although I can see why a novice to remodel could have missed it. why not just make steps longer & build something around the meter to hide it, but not to interfere with meter readings? you could even put planters on the steps next to the wall to keep from bumping into it. best of luck.

If you move that receptacle, it will have to be brought up to current code requirements. It appears to be an old 3-pin receptacle, so you'll have to change it to a modern 4-pin, and put a 4-pin plug and 4-conductor cord on the dryer. Depending on how old the cable is, and whether it can provide a safe ground, there's a good chance you'll also have to pull a new run of cable with 3 conductors plus ground. A special tool makes cutting armored cable easier, but it's not really necessary, especially if you don't use the stuff often. To cut it without the fancy tool, bend the armor sharply at the cut point so the coils buckle and pull apart. Cut a coil with a pair of diagonal cutters you don't care about. Trim, bend, and file the cut coil end so it's smooth and perpendicular to the wires in the cable. Don't forget to insert an anti-short bushing.

I've been in my house for 40 years, but the box was changed about 20 years ago to add 2 breakers. The splice is from the doorbell transformer (I think).

I'm thinking about adding a room (which would require a permit), so I'm trying to decide how many other projects I may be able to afford to have done at the same time. Of course with an older house, I can bet some type of problem will come up. But I think I will ask for a seperate estimate anyway.

Thank you for your reply also, Kurto. Yes, I definitely would want everything to be up to code.

I've tried to familiarize myself with articles about moving a panel box, but most of it turns out to be instructions on changing outlets.

If any one has any other pointers, issues or questions I should talk to the contractor about, I would be happy to get them.

It's hard to say for sure from that picture But it looks to me like there is no separate ground in this panel? If true, I'm going to say that will be a problem for changing out the panel. Just changing out the panel would be a few hours, but If it needs a new feed run- impossible to say without being there.

If that is a sub-panel it is not installed correctly.

A sub-panel needs a 4-wire feed (hot-hot-neutral-ground) and the grounds and neutrals must be separated.
