grommets or rings or something else?

I need to do window treatments for our entire house. Drapes on some of the windows will need to be opened and closed often. Which drape hanging technique will require the least amount of fussing to look neat?

I've always used blinds and fixed drapes so this is all new to me. I'd like to not use blinds for this house because I'm tired of the cords and layers and the dusting. The house has a cottage vibe with some formal antiques thrown in.

A traverse rod with pleated drapes is the best option for drapes that are open and closed often. The sewn in pleats keep you from fussing to make them look good, and the traverse rod makes them easy to open and close.

I think pinch pleats are probably too formal for my house. What would be the next best option?

Artsygirl, You're in Ontario and took the photo's in January?? If that is the case, the rose is completely dormant and those leaves are dead leaves from last season's growth. The black spots are just gradual decay and decomposition of the leaves. Some roses, mostly the really hardy ones, will cleanly drop all of their leaves prior to on-set of winter and others do not. Most of my less hardy roses, including most of the Austin's, will hold most of their dead leaves during the winter and are still on the bush when I prune in spring. My Tamora's, I have 4 of them, look exactly like this right now also. Just prune the bushes in April and pick off any of these dead leaves that might still be attached to the non-winterkilled cane in spring. The rose will soon grow new leaves and canes once it breaks dormancy. Also, make sure to clean the soil of any of these dead leaves. Old dead leaves tend to harbour any fungal spores that may have been present last year. They may also house pest eggs that will hatch in the spring. Incidentally, Tamora does very well in our climate from a disease resistance standpoint, so stop stressing until spring time. :) take care,

Hello All, An update here. I've finally concluded it's the water and not the fertilizer because it was happening in baby plants that had never been fertilized. It's a reddish brown crust (iron?) forming on the innermost leaves of the plants. IÃ¢ÂÂm attaching a picture of the latest victim that was transplanted from a mother leaf a couple weeks ago. You can also see a brown crust forming on the perlite. Something tells me that is not a good sign. One variety in particular is very sensitive to it (Caribbean Blue) but some varieties (Starry Night Blue, Buckeye Lazy Daze) are immune to the problem. Unfortunately, 75% of the varieties I'm growing now are showing this problem to some degree. Our town water dept. claims the water is soft but lime scale deposits in the bottom of my coffee pot and at the drinking fountain at work say otherwise. I have lived in hard water areas in the West before and the local water where I live now in MA is not that hard, but apparently it has enough minerals it to cause problems. (Most of MA gets its water from the Quabbin reservoir which has very soft water but our town uses local ponds). I have an aquarium test kit in storage that I will have to dig out to test the hardness and pH of the water. In the meantime I bought a few gallons of purified water (reverse osmosis) that I will be using for the time being. If anyone else has some insight into this, IÃ¢ÂÂd appreciate it, thanks!

Thank you ALL so very much for all your ideas! I thought about a mini chandelier too. The towel ring is going to be moved - I had it there prior to finding the mirror and I agree it is not the right place for it. I am trying to decide on paint color or wallpaper, lighting, etc. so in the interest of not putting more holes in the walls I just left that there until other decisions are made. I am happy to see so many of you like the mirror as I thought it was quite the find to go with the ornate cabinet. But I must admit you all have set me on a different path with the lighting because I was looking at ornate and you are right, too much ornate will not do. Ok, Kippy, here's more a of styles/colors blend question. :-) Suede Old Hickory Tannery Sofa. Our green couches. Safavieh rug (if it's soggy, I'm sorry. I've been drooling on it for a while now...) Yellow chairs? I'm definitely willing to look for other chairs, but one of my dd's really likes these so, hey, who knows. I also kind of like the blue plaid chairs... And for those who are wondering how on earth we'd fit 3 couches plus 2 chairs, here's a thought: The pictures look dinky. You could do pinch pleats but attach them with visible clip rings instead of a traverse rod.

Personally I don't like the clip rings because the curtains sag between them. They look sloppy to me and not in a casual kind of way. I love the grommet look, just wonder how long it will be around. I also like the ripplewave look and believe you can do them on a traverse rod, some of which are very pretty. But, I'm not sure either of those work with cottage vibe either. How about tab top? Those aren't too bad to slide and move. Could even put wave tape in the top so they open in waves. For cottage I think of soft and billowy, nothing too structured. Knowing me, I'd get a pretty traverse rod and figure out some way to attach the tab tops to make them work with the traverse rod. I can get very creative with things like that when necessary. :) Not sure if that helps, just my thinking out loud.

I don't think pinch pleats are too formal. The drape style is a "small" element of a completed room and does not define the room. The fabric pattern and material will play a part too. I like the look of pinch pleats and and did all my drapes that way for windows in both casual and more formal rooms.
