wine rack options

I am building a wine cellar in my new construction home. I have everything figured out except where to get the racks. I was looking at Wine Cellar Innovations but have not been very impressed with their service. I have a 10 x 10 space and would like some help with planning out how to best utilize the space. Anyone have any recommendations on a company that would be helpful?

You get the maximum storage if you use bins because you don't waste as much air space. The downside is that you can't easily get to the bottom bottles and you really will be cursing when you try to stack a bunch of Rhone or Burgundy shaped bottles. The alternative, which I use, is shelves that are spaced about 3 3/4 inches apart. I just made them. A Bordeaux bottle is about 3 inches diameter, a Burgundy bottle is about 3 1/4 inches so 3 3/4 gets you enough space. Then space a couple of shelves over 4" for weird shapes like Turley, Pax, Champagne, some Beaujolais, or some other big bottles, or bigger if you tend to buy mags.

I just took plywood, ripped it to 9" and built shelves for the wines myself.

Alternatively, there is IWA that has pretty good prices but you pay for shipping, and there other places that sell racks. My suggestion if you have time is to check out some local restaurant supply places - they often have things like that.

I don't know if you have a Menards store around you, but we just got some plastic stackable bins that are on sale right now for around $7.50 each. You can set them directly on the basement floor and they stack up and hold about 14 bottles in each one. Then when they're empty, you can nest them together out of the way. We stacked them three high and have them full and they seem like they're going to be fine.
They're like industrial bins, open on the front and solid on the end and sides.

I agree with Riverspots--you don't want room temperature wine storage in most living areas, especially a kitchen. You want someplace cool, dark, and undisturbed; wine gets damaged if it's warm, exposed to light, and/or vibrated. Options besides a basement cellar are a closet or small space with a chiller unit or a refrigerated beverage center type unit. If you just want a few bottles & short term storage, then an out of the way lower cabinet, closet floor, or pantry would be better than the kitchen, and doesn't rob precious storage space there.

I think you could probably take out the lattice strips &.... 1. Replace with shelves to hold cookbooks & a few pretty pieces of cookware. 2. Or, you could probably have doors put on, if you could find a match to your cabinets. 3. Depending on depth & size, you could have pullouts for trash & recyclables (again, if you can find panels to match your cabinets).

Your kitchen has such great structure with which to work. I congratulate you on your purchase. Exciting! The thrifty part of me would be looking in Habitat of Humanity Restores and similar stores. But to keep the pedals moving, the pragmatic side of me would be looking for a replacement door. From a distance, it appears the cabinets are possibly maple (can't tell if I see some knotting), with a square flat panel door front in the honeytone stain family. The opened base is next to the sink looks about 18", with prep space above. Functionally, I'd consider modifying the interior to allow a garbage pullout or garbage can. The link below offers replacement doors and breaks it down by wood and stain. Perhaps you could send them a piece of the remaining wood for them to match, if the price works for you. This assuming you don't know the cabinet manufacturing details to call about replacement etc., or if a replacement like shown happens to be more in budget. Well, what often happens is people see things in a magazine or online and then they want it, but they don't take into account that their room isn't the same as the one in the picture, so it's not going to look as good in their space as it did in the photo. In this case, you would need a full wall to make this display work, and you don't have that. And this display would also only work in a closed wine cellar, you also don't have that, you have an open space with windows. I would not try to recreate that display, it is not going to look good in your bar area. But if that's what you're going to do anyway, then stick with what looks best in your inspiration pic and get cheap wine in all the same label. You're not going to drink it so it doesn't matter. Do not used empty, used wine bottles, that's gross. The ONLY way this display works is if they are actual wine bottles.
