I have been looking at this and I agree with ZoeCat that the IKEA Grundal is an effective option. It can be folded back as well. They are phasing those out by the way.. I was planning to head to my local IKEA to buy one in case I can use it in the prep sink area. The bar is useful to hang other things as well. Lalitha

Three thoughts. (1) I don't know if this works without mocking it up, but you might try using an "x" grid in the space...I haven't seen a premade x rack that narrow, but I think it would work. (2) Wine Enthusiast sells modular racks that take up 4" per bottle + 1 3/8 inch extra on the sides...if you did three accross, that would be 13 3/8". That might fit? If not, you could probably make it fit by not using the outside mounting pieces, but rather attaching the racks directly to the cabinet sides. (3) Vintage View racks are meant usually to disaplay bottles sideways...but you could attach them to the sides instead, if you wanted. That would also give you 3 bottles accross. Alternately, you could bring the back forward and use one vintageview at the front, they are 12" wide and come 1, 2 or 3 bottles deep. At the cost of potentially holding fewer bottles it might allow an interesting/attractive presentation. See www.vintageview.com

I had some plumbing in my soffits that couldn't be moved my cabinet builder cut an "L" shape out of the back of my cabinets and finished them that way. You can't see it unless the doors are open and even then, because it's up so high close to the ceiling and finished like the rest of the inside, you'd really have to look for it.

Eliminated. We'll have a 15" under cabinet wine cooler in the island. Builder will leave me a 15" opening about 24" deep with a plug. ====== I've always been curious just how much warmer things are above fridge and this thread reminded me to do my experiment. Our current house has a cabinet over the fridge and I've never noticed it any warmer there than anywhere else... Inside A/C thermostat set to 75* Used an laser thermometer. Took multiple readings. Wine in a small countertop wine rack read 75* (36" from floor, 6 feet from fridge) Set a wine bottle on it's side DIRECTLY on top of the metal fridge and left it for day. That bottle read 76.5* (6' from floor) Wine in a wooden rack would be a couple of inches or more over the fridge and not in direct contact with the top of the fridge. In my experience you will find 1-2 degrees of difference between the floor and ceiling of my house anyway. Both my current fridges vent their warm out at the bottom front - not the back. After I re-engineered our HVAC ducts years ago I was able to get all rooms in the house to within less than 2 degrees of each other during peak summer heat and what I'll call normal usage. Bottom line - while a countertop wine rack is not ideal - the temp difference over the fridge was not much worse - downright negligible. But at any rate - not going with that option - we'll just have a cooler built in.
