Removing Wine Rack from Island

We are buying a house that has an existing island with a wine rack built into it. We are not wine drinkers so that is useless to us. I am generally happy with the kitchen but was wondering about options to modify the island.

Could the wine rack be removed and shelves put in place of the wine rack?

Or could that area be removed entirely creating an overhang where I could put a stool? (there is a bar at the peninsula so this would be in addition to that).

Obviously I wouldn't want to do this unless it could be done and would look nice and not look like part of the island had been chopped off....

That's a pretty big wine rack!

Very pretty kitchen.

Can you post a pic from the side? I'm very into retrofitting cabs, but have to see how it's hooked in.

I envy all those nice photos of neatly (or not so neatly but still organized) 3rd racks filled with flatware! That would be so nice to 'unload'! DH loads, and stated he would never bother with putting the flatware in the slots, or dividing them into categories on a 3rd rack. Went with Dishwasher Drawers anyway, so it's a mute point for me as they use the cutlery baskets... I've got an old whirlpool now, cutlery basket, and my flatware comes out clean despite 'spooning' of flatware. I do think a 3rd rack would be wonderful...providing the 'dish loader' uses it!

Heat is ejected from the bottom into the room, I'm assuming there may be minor dissipation from the back to the top since my refrigerator requires one inch at the back and top for air circulation. It may depend on the energy efficiency of the unit. Of course the compressor has some minor vibration but if it is vibrating the cabinet next to it there is a problem. I can barely hear nor feel mine with hands on the fridge. Regardless, you all should experiment with yours and see if you have temperature fluctuation between your cabinets. My fridge has no effect on my adjacent cabinets which was the original question. I keep long term storage in the basement and short term in the cab next to my fridge. stillpitpat is looking for a practical solution. I don't think she has the space nor $$ for a Wine Spectator solution of storing wine between 45-65 degrees with no UV light.

Nivah, Thank you your the images! I have been quite torn between painting and replacing all the cabinets. That kitchen does look so much better! I have the same cabinet doors throughout my house...the built-ins in the Liv. Rm. & Dn. Rm., and both Bathrooms. Lately, I have been thinking that I should paint the cabinets in my bathroom, as there are only 4 doors, and 2 drawers. That way I can see exactly what my kitchen doors would look like if I painted them. If I do that, I will definitely post some before and after photos. Other than my layout questions, my main concern has been that the cabinets were built as one large box along each leg of cabinets. So things get lost. I have clear bins in some of them to keep storage containers organized, but some doors were too narrow. A couple of solutions for that is to add base runners and build some custom pull-out shelving. And if I just remove the uppers on the peninsula, I could use the doors from the dining room built-in to add doors to the back of the peninsula cabinet for easier access. Thoughts? Thanks!

Eliminated. We'll have a 15" under cabinet wine cooler in the island. Builder will leave me a 15" opening about 24" deep with a plug. ====== I've always been curious just how much warmer things are above fridge and this thread reminded me to do my experiment. Our current house has a cabinet over the fridge and I've never noticed it any warmer there than anywhere else... Inside A/C thermostat set to 75* Used an laser thermometer. Took multiple readings. Wine in a small countertop wine rack read 75* (36" from floor, 6 feet from fridge) Set a wine bottle on it's side DIRECTLY on top of the metal fridge and left it for day. That bottle read 76.5* (6' from floor) Wine in a wooden rack would be a couple of inches or more over the fridge and not in direct contact with the top of the fridge. In my experience you will find 1-2 degrees of difference between the floor and ceiling of my house anyway. Both my current fridges vent their warm out at the bottom front - not the back. After I re-engineered our HVAC ducts years ago I was able to get all rooms in the house to within less than 2 degrees of each other during peak summer heat and what I'll call normal usage. Bottom line - while a countertop wine rack is not ideal - the temp difference over the fridge was not much worse - downright negligible. But at any rate - not going with that option - we'll just have a cooler built in.

I think you could probably take out the lattice strips &....

1. Replace with shelves to hold cookbooks & a few pretty pieces of cookware.

2. Or, you could probably have doors put on, if you could find a match to your cabinets.

3. Depending on depth & size, you could have pullouts for trash & recyclables (again, if you can find panels to match your cabinets).

The cabinets indicate the manufacturer is Legacy but I don't know beyond that (house is about 6 years old).

The other option I had considered was to make the cabinet island "shorter" under the granite thereby creating an overhang so I could put a stool there.

It looks like you could easily remove the lattice by cutting the strips out, and gently prying them off the frame. Then replace it with shelves for a bookcase.

If you want doors, check the rest of the house for matching doors. I'm stealing doors from the laundry for my expanded kitchen, 'cause they match.

We took out a similar rack and made it into shelves for cookbooks. We liked it so well, we did the same thing when we did the reno.

I would find shelving for cookbooks more useful as well. Your kitchen looks spacious like it will be enjoyable to cook and entertain in. Congratulations on your new home.
