edge binding on woven wood shades

What are the pros and cons of using edge binding for woven wood shades? Does it help protect the edges or is is just decorative? Does it tend to get dirty? One big plus in my mind of the woven woods is the ability to just dust them and have them look good for years. The only way I can keep curtains clean is to launder or dry clean them from time to time so I'm worried that there is no good way to clean edge bindings.

My blinds will be white and I will use white edge bindings if I decide to go with bindings. If I don't use the bindings I'm afraid the underlying "wood" of the blinds, a sort of light brown, will be visible at the edge and a noticeable flaw in the desired all white and bright look that I'm going for (even though the blinds will be an inside mount). If I have to choose between the two evils I think I would be more disturbed if my edge binding was uncleanable (is that a word?).

All advice is appreciated.
