The film would be a bad idea! Most new windows will void the warranty if a tinting film is installed on the unit any where. Todays window glass is far more protective than that of years before. Your windows pictured above look like they have the original single pain glass in them. Todays glass is insulated and blocks out most of those bad burning rays. New insert windows would go in fast and cheap. Make sure they come with a Low E coating and has an Argon gas fill. The LOE coating blocks out the harmful rays. Then add a good mini blind shade that you adjust on the real bright sunny days. This should be all you need to protect your newborn. If your uncomfortable with this you can get windows with tinted glass from the factory. They also offer reflective glass but all these options come with a price tag! I know your child's safety is important so make sure you get a good reliable company to do your work. Good Luck!!!

guy, those are old, wooden windows in the picture. Warranty is no longer an issue. She expressed that she didn't want to replace them yet..not in the budget.

In this situation, the film is one option to be considered.

I too live in an old uninsulated house with single pane windows where the bedrooms face the southwest and get super hot in summer. No amount of window covering would be effective enough to make the rooms comfortable. A window air conditioner is the only thing that works in summer.
I did put up insulated curtains in front of my honeycomb cellular blinds. I feel the insulated curtains keep the room comfortable for a couple of hours longer than just the blinds alone. For example, before I got the curtains the room would get too hot by 11:00 am. WIth the curtains, the room gets too hot by 1:00 pm.
I couldn't access your photo of your windows. I don't know how many windows there are or how large they are. But in one of my bedrooms, a family member placed a big, tall wardrobe in front of the window (the window faces a noisy street) and this seems to keep out some of the heat.

I lived at my parents during college with a bedroom on the west side - full sun and set.

I hung a nice looking piece of lattice in the summer and stapled window screen to the back of it to give extra shade - nobody could really notice much of the extra screen stapled.

It looked good. I stored it in winter. This also left all the glass free of clutter and allowed the window panes to slide easy.

In Arizona they put up a screen material that blocks something like 80% of the light. From the inside you can see out just fine.

A budget idea I just got is to make up a window screen frame the same side as the entire window and put in the sun block screen, or this shade cloth. Mount on the exterior of the window. (You might find a smaller piece of shade cloth for cheaper.)

On second thought. Just go with the window film. Blocks 70% of summer heat. Retains 55% of winter heat. Probably cost about $40 and easy to install.

When my brother was born, his room faced south. My Mom bought a window shade that when it was closed the room was totally black. It was a hortizontal shade made of some kind of fabric and recoiled onto a wooden roller. I know it was expensive because I still remember my Mom talking about it. A window shade store could probably help. Another place to inquire is an awning shop, the ones that make the fabric canopy for store windows. They might know of a fabric you need to took for. I am not sure where you live but when living in Florida I used to frequent a Sail Making shop for fabrics to control sun and salt.

I have a huge glass block bathroom window that faces south into the searing texas sun, and gets very hot to touch in the summer. We have "blackout" double cell celluar shades from american blind that work well when closed, but when you open them the heat is still there.

2 weeks ago I found the solar screen (90% block) material at a box store, along with the screen frame pieces, spline, and "L" shaped corner connectors so you don't have to mitre cut the frames. I made my own screen. The entire process took about 30 minutes.

Last week we had a couple 100+ degree days, and I am TOTALLY AMAZED how much heat this screen deflects! I can place my hand on the blocks, and it feels cool. It does block out some of the light (maybe 40%), but I can guarantee it will pay for itself ($30 with leftover material for more) in a month of AC cooling. I plan on doing all of my windows this week...

I used the Gila film posted and it really helps. That and then interior shutters.
