Can you put an area rug on top of carpet?

In our experience with this, the rug always needs adjusting, even with the sticky backing. Any suggestions?

I have an area rug on carpet, but it is under my large coffee table/ottoman, so it is weighed down and doesn't move.

I guess maybe it depends on size and weight. I have one (5x8 or 6x10 maybe?) under a dining table and it's fine. Also a larger one than that under the front legs of sectional and coffee table in living room and it doesn't budge. How big is yours and where is it placed?

First of all, if you like what you are using now, try to solve the problem before purchasing a new vacuum cleaner. The Hoover WT will clean thick carpeting very well. There are a few things that could be happening. First, the rug that you put down may have a plastic backing. This would seal the rug. When your vacuum runs over this rug, there is no where for the air to pull through the rug. The Hoover then becomes "stuck" to the rug. The same would happen if you put down a rug on a flat floor without a pad. You said that you put these rugs over your wall to wall, so the WTW would act as padding. Does your Hoover have the same sealing issue when you vacuum the WTW? It most likely does not. Also, since you are smelling rubber, your belt is slipping. When was the last time you changed the belt? Put on a fresh genuine belt, then lower the height of the vacuum just enough to hear a change in air movement and vibration from the brushroll. I can recommend some vacuum cleaners, but I would rather wait until you have tried what I suggested first.

"On HGTV they were doing a remodel, and I remember them asking if the owners were hiding a carpet stain because the rug was on a carpeted area" Wow, what a pompous ass. I wonder if the point was they had never heard of layering carpets for color and texture and pattern (done since rugs were invented), or just that they wanted a chance to sneer at the homeowners for the benefit of the viewers at home? This is why, IMHO, HGTV is near worthless for ideas: hours and hours of broadcast time wasted on young, tragically hip kids fresh out of school who, despite "designing" exactly like every other young, tragically hip kid fresh out of school, have somehow managed to get a *television show*, so they're convinced they're *special*. Pffffft. Rug over carpet is fine, your biggest problem will be keeping it in place, *not* whether or not it's going to look "right". If it's for the living room, I'd recommend getting one big enough to put the edges under the legs ofthe furniture, anchoring it down. Match the colors, keep it in proportion and it'll look great.

Do you have to put pads under an area rug? Figured the wall to wall was good enough padding. I have 1/2" pad under my wall to wall. To answer OP's question, I use area rugs in my house to "anchor" the furniture, add some pattern/texture (in my living room, I'll post pics once I get furniture back in, had ceiling painted today). I also use one in my family room to anchor and define the "conversation area" since our breakfast nook is tucked into a corner of that room (also have round area rug under round breakfast table, it's too small but it keeps stains off the WTW carpet!).

For a lot of years I had rugs over carpet....the amount of crawl depends on a lot. One the direction the nap on the carpet lays, the direction of travel through the room and the lay of the rug and how you vacuum.
Eventually, I bit the bullet, tore up the carpet and refinished and repaired the floors....and still the rugs creep. The one in the dining room always goes one way....leading me to believe people walk faster from the dining room to the living room than to the kitchen. the living room rug never moves....but the one in the family room always moves east....
Well....after all it IS an Oriental!

Get wool, if at all possible! It's been my experience that a heavier weight keeps the crawling at bay, even on carpet. Anchoring at least two corners under furniture also helps. ; o)

I have a heavy wool area rug (I think 5x8) on top of wall to wall berber carpeting. It doesn't seem to creep, but I also have a large ottoman in the center of the rug. Even if that weren't there, I don't think the rug would shift too much.

Mine crawl and I use it as an opportunity to bend and stretch while I yank and tug!
