Home Depot instead of registry?

A friend of mine has asked me to help her with the wording of a note she'd like to include with her wedding invitations, that would let people know she is not registered anywhere, but that she and her fiance would like to receive Home Depot gift cards instead. I'm having a hard to coming up with anything that doesn't sound tacky. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I think word-of-mouth might be the best form of communication on this. Undoubtedly, people will ask, and you may want to inform close family and friends that if asked, a gift card from HD would be just great.

Some people, however, do not like giving money or gift cards. They may think it's impersonable or that they don't want the bride/groom to know exactly how much they spent,--- there are many reasons. Do expect some gifts; realistically, not everyone is going to give money or gift cards. I'm not saying it's bad,--- it's just what I've observed. Unless it's a very, very small wedding and everyone is dialed in, you're bound to get something other than money/gift card.

It's not appropriate to include any gift registry information in a wedding invitation, so it's no wonder you can't find a non-tacky way to do it.

Registry information is given out by the parents or close friends if a guest calls and asks! Do go with the word of mouth method.

OK, the 2nd try at our kitchen started last Tuesday. I'm so burnt out I don't know how much energy I have to write it up, so I'll gloss over some details. The new guy and his boss showed up and again expressed amazement at how bad the first try was. I was very reassured about their take on what needed to be done about it but it was also clear that not all the damage could be corrected. The original face frames were gouged and or cracked in places, riddled with screw holes where he'd retried door positions a few too many times, etc. The first few days went OK, tho there were a few small things I had to point out he took it well and fixed them. No fighting or attitude issues! I was very worried that he hadn't removed all of the old glue down to the bare wood, but he seems to have made that work OK. On Friday I could tell he was getting tired and frustrated though. He put up some crown and it really looked like amateur hour. Then he tried to fix it with filler and I had to push for it to get redone right. It still isn't as good as it should be. He came on Saturday to get the job done and again did some crown that just wasn't good enough - had to have him redo that too. Still not as good as I'd do myself. I've been appreciative all week that he's trying to fix a big mess and can't do magic. But when he declared it done yesterday and asked me to check it and 'sign off' I was not ready to do so. There were still a few things to tweak and fix as well as the damage done by the first guy. I was NOT ready to call it good. He was telling me if I don't sign off at the end of the job then he doesn't get paid. Fine I said, come back another day and fix a few more things. But I could tell that wasn't really an option for him. There seems to be a very unfair structure to how they handle their subs. Give them a tight deadline to complete, no option to run over and either get sign off on the last day or don't get paid. That's just unfair to both the sub and the customer. Plus, an hour or less of looking over the job isn't enough to decide whether it's good or not. As we cleaned up and moved stuff back in today we started seeing all kinds of little things that needed fixing but hadn't noticed yesterday. Door and drawer alignment, odd choices in how to handle shoe and corner molding, etc. So now I have to call them tomorrow and work out those details. Very irritating and stressful! - D P.S. I think it's hilarious that Home Depot has a little 'sponsored by' logo on this thread. Not exactly a flattering write up!

Thank you for the very many helpful comments so far. Since we've not gone down this road before, it's great to get an idea of other's experiences and what a reasonable starting point will be. I don't mind the couple of comments about our budget being insufficient: I am trying to determine what does or doesn't fit in that budget. So pushback is good. If too little fits in it, then maybe we need to table the project for a few months or year until we have some additional cash on the table. We have one quote, that is in line with the previous comment. The GC we talked to didn't seem phased by our budget (and we cited a smaller number back then, as we've saved more in the intervening months). However, when he drew up recommendations, the number *did* come in higher. The plumbing, electrical, and ceiling work were estimated at about 2500 each. The estimate for cabinets, counters, modifying the drywall, etc was about 21,500. So, $28,500 was the quote for all the essential stuff. This left me puzzling over the following problem: wait, save, and come back with more than $28,500 (the 10,000 mentioned would probably be ideal), or try to figure out if we could scale the concept back to bring that figure at least somewhat closer to budget. Our next step may be to play with the Ikea planner. Perhaps what I can do from there is check with one of the big boxes or else (this might be smarter) just get cabinet quotes from a vendor, and then pay one of the contractors who works our neighborhood and knows rowhouses to help us evaluate the cost of everything else. That way we'll know what we can aim at and how close we are. Thanks again, this is all very helpful.

@emmarene "exactly where I am going to plant it".....wait, please, I can't stop laughing...... Cistus are just the absolute best...love cistus. Just thinking that I'm going to WM and pick up some potting soil, will check on whether or not they have steer manure....in hopes. I use a lot of nassella tenuissima / Mexican Feather Grass and yes, I do get a lot of seedlings to use elsewhere. I do think I've reached the point of being able to just weed them now, have potted maybe 100 in the last several weeks. I think of them the same as anything else that reseeds a lot, I would rather weed the seedlings than do without the plant. Since I'd last read that HD and Armstrong nurseries had "vowed" not to sell the plant due to its invasiveness, I noticed last week that WM must see potential there as they are now selling it....LOL...

*looks around library that's currently functioning as a tool chest for ideas* For your own sanity: gift cards for home improvement stores. There is always a billion little things you need. gift cards for the liquor commission - for when you can't deal with the billionth problem that goes wrong massage gift certificates - for when painting makes your shoulders and neck ache, but your STILL not done painting... movie tickets - for when your exhausted AND broke, and just want a night out. For doing work yourselves: Painters tape. Don't ask how much of the stuff you'll go through! Brad nails for the nailgun when installing trim. Again, its amazing how many thousand you go through! rags. For staining, cleaning paint of surfaces it shouldn't have gone, dirty hands... tape measures...because even if you have 6, you'll only ever find 1 at a time a GOOD stud finder spackle for when you accidentally knock something over dent your newly painted walls, and new knives for when your SO washes them and leaves them in the sink to rust... respirator with replacement cartridges - so that you aren't dying with a major headache and sore throat after staining all of your doors/trim... long screws to match your door hardware. (We found these hard to find in certain colors). It sucks when your builder drops them, and replaces the missing ORB one with a shiny brass one... undercutting saw (if installing flooring), or one of those multi-tools with the undercutting blade. plastic-type prybars - for when you install something wrong and need to 'delicately' redo it... Other 'things' you may not have thought of including in your home, or want to upgrade: whole home surge protector fancier doorbell exterior lighting outdoor bench/seating BBQ! yardwork tools - rakes, shovels, lawnmower accessories, garbage cans, recycling bins tool chest and/or pegboard and hook set for the massive amount of tools you've bought! decorative air/floor registers

Absolutely go with word of mouth only. Your friend may want to check with her local Home Depot. Some of them will actually set up a registry for you at their store. Again, that information should be communicated to guests verbally and not in writing.

I agree, too. No mention at all of any kind of registry or other preferences as to gifts unless and until someone asks.

Of course you are having trouble finding wording that doesn't sound tacky. How can there be a charming way to tell people that you are anticipating their generosity and are trying to direct it yourself?

havnablast - -when I reread my post, it sounded to me like I was saying YOU were trying to ask for gift cards -- I do realize this is your friend's idea, not yours.

But there's a good solution for your friend: At least on line, Home Depot has a gift registry anyway. So she and her fiance can just go ahead and register for some things there, if they want. It's the same as gift cards, anyway, as they can exchange things, right?

But anyway, she should not include any information about the registry or gift preferences in the invitations. If you don't want to argue about it with her about it, just direct her to this site and let her see what people have had to say about sending out unsolicited registry info! There are several strings on the subject.

Wow...I guess I need to brush up on my wedding etiquette. I assumed that it was ok to include registry info because I have never received an invitation myself that didn't mention where a couple was registered. I will pass on this thread to my friend...I think she'll be really surprised as well. She did check out the registry Home Depot offers, but none of the items you can list are what they need. Good point about being able to exchange something though. Thanks for the advice!

I have no opinion about the correctness of this at all, but we have received two wedding invitations this summer, and they both had wedding registry info. I understand that this seems very tacky, but I appreciated it because then I did not have to call the (busy) parents to ask where the soon-to-be-marrieds are registered. It's nice to be able to get to those lists right away so you have some choices.

Home Depot is a great registry idea! Other sites online I've found that area alternatives to Target and Walmart are www.findgift.com, www.registerlocally.com, there are also a lot of websites where you can register for charitable gifts...that encourages you tell all of your guests! :) rachel_gardener.

Well, of COURSE the stores encourage you to tell your guests about your registry at THEIR STORE -- they want all your guests to buy from THEM.

Don't get your etiquette advice from stores. They don't care if you look greedy or crass. They are in the business of selling merchandise, not helping you to be gracious and polite.
