Eyes Closed

19 years ago

I have been reading the postings here for a few weeks now. It has been enlightening to hear so many people with the same struggles that I have. I have heard a great deal of support and encouragement from several people on here with regards to my own situation. I have also realized that, in some cases, I have it on easy street in comparison. And, this may be terrrible to say, but in a way it makes me feel less umm disconcerted about my own actions.

This being said, I would like to address some generalizations that have been made on this forum on SEVERAL occasions. Generalizations such as;

sm do not care about sk, sm would be happy with estrangement bw parent and child, sm want sk to go away, sm want kids to be kicked out at 18, sm is not a parent

1. I am a step mother. I am a mother. I am a parent. I have FOUR wonderful children. I do NOT have three step children and one biological child.

2. I treat ALL of my children as complete equals in my home. My children are all treated as if they are of equal importance to me. (as they are) They are given the same amount of love attention responsibilty financial means etc.

3. In no way shape or form would I ever, EVER encourage or even permit estrangement between my husband and his children, or that of them and their mother.

4. I am involved with all aspects of raising and decision making with our children and always will be.

5. At no time would I ever not make our children feel welcome and loved in OUR home.

6. I spend every waking moment of every day providing for and taking care of all FOUR of my children. At no point in time would I ever allow or even suggest that a child that is in my life should be denied anything he or she needs and if its possible nothing he or she wants.

7. I love all four of my children with all of my heart... No matter what happens in their life or mine ... my children will always have a place with me.

FYI: I can not help or change the circumstances or issues that came before. However, when I chose to bring my husband and children into my home. When I chose to make mine and my daughters life one with him and his children I welcomed each member into my heart. We are a family and no matter what family takes care of family. We may not be what is conventional and we may not be what I dreamed of when I was young, but that matters not we are together and happy. I do not believe in distinguishing my children between step or non. I would never take anything away from my hudbands children. I provide for them as I do for my child.

This being said, I felt I needed to defend myself against certain generalizations that have been made repeatedly. I find it horrifying when any person or persons generalize a group of people based upon a few persons actions. Further, I understand that things happen in our life that we do not plan or expect, things that can leave us hurt and jaded. However, although this is not the life that was planned this is the life that we have and before we become selfish and consumed by our own narrow points of view, insecurities, and pain... I think it is most important to remember that it's not about you, me, an ex, or any of us. It is infact, about the children, and nothing greater can be given to the child than the love and support of EVERY person in his or her life. This may not be the family you wanted but this is infact, whether you like it or not, the family you have. I think it may be time to let go of these generalizations and make the best of it.

And let's be real... with the mass quantity of stress responsibility, heartbreak, and confusion that goes along with being a sm ... who would brave that terrain if they didnt care.
