grill b/t glass or semi true divide

My wife and I are deciding on window options. I am in favor of windows with the grill b/t the glass- They are less expensive and easier to clean (I am the person who gets on a ladder and windexes them). She is in favor of semi- true divide- It gives a more finished or richer look. In the end I don't think we will lose sleep over the decision; however, any input or thoughts would be helpful. thanks in advance

Either way can be easy to clean if you choose tilt-ins.

Have you priced the SDL windows? The average retail can be $150 for a small window to $300 for a medium sized window.

after much research I want as close to authentic as I can get. That being said, I want to match the architecture of the rest of the home 1931 Dutch Colonial are putting 3 new windows for kitchen reno -
So, it depends what type/style/yr of home, are you replacing all windows, etc..

I have cooked on all three and the TEK IR is the only gas grill that cooks as well as charcoal. It's advantages over charcoal are that it is quick to set up, easy to clean up and does an excellent job of creating the charcoal taste. As many here know, the flavor is created by the smoke from the fat striking the hot surface be it charcoal or something else. The higher the IR energy (from gas or charcoal) and the less the flame, the more smoke generated rather than being turned into additional flame. The TEK creates a great deal of smoke because the IR glass sits between the flame and the dripping grease. On older style IR burners there is still an open flame to ignite the grease drippings reducing the amount of smoke to add flavor. With charcoal, once the embers are glowing red, it is emitting a lot of IR and much less to no flame and hence produces a lot of smoke and flavor. I have owned the FireMagic and I would not purchase another. The burners are cast SS but they still do rust over time and the flavor grills wear out too. They are very hard to clean and the heat was not anywhere near as good as the advertisements. If you are the type that never clean a grill and don't mind a gritty looking grill it may not matter. I am the type that wants it to look clean and inviting each time and the self cleaning feature along with the dishwasher removal panels makes the TEK a breeze to clean and keep looking nice. For me that was worth a lot. The more conventional grills like the Firemagic, even with their ceramic infrared burner are not even a close match.

foodonastump: the green chillies come in a small can about the same size as a small can of black olives. Usually they are in the Mexican food section. There is a choice of chopped or whole. I want to try the Fiesta Ole, too. It look good! We did the Apple Baked French Toast Saturday morning for the B&B guests. She has an apple tree; we were picking apples by flashlight! The guests loved it. My friend did the meat. She wrapped smoked sausages in bacon, topped it with brown sugar and baked it. There was a fruit cup (grapes, strawberries, pineapple and banana) and I made English Muffins. The experience was fun. The guests were interesting to visit with; some were first time guests and others had been coming for 12 years. I have one picture of the table and will post when I get the chance. JUst put 3 new windows in my kitchen remodel - I went w/Marvin - 6/1 - SDL - the grids are attached on both sides of window wood - not removable - Yes harder to clean but everything is relative - the rest of the home is 6/1 true divided single pane (or shall I say pain!) - 1930 Dutch colonial revival I spent much time agonizing about this detail - I really wanted to match as closely as possible the detail in the other windows. The muntins are an architectural detail that really makes a statement - start looking at curbside view of homes - see what you like and don't like. I really do not like grills btwn glass - I just think it really cheapens the look - I don't like Anderson's removal grills - yes, makes easier cleaning but to my eye it cheapens the look. I would imagine that pricing has got to be close with grid options. I'm a lover of old buildings and architecture so my keen eye picks up on such details. Muntins should stand out - not be a little detail (betwn the glass grills)IMO. You have to live in the home - so you ulitmately decide what is important to you. One word of caution:: In reviewing the Marvin catalog for window order look CLOSELY - those pics are tiny & make seeing the true detail very difficult. Many of their windows start to get horizontal - Windows should be vertical like a cereal box - My contractor calls the "squatty" but look at the individual panes in your choices make sure they are vertical - My architect friend pointed it out to me - when i wasn't really seeing it ,she said "don't you want to take that window & turn it" then I got it. Now when I'm looking at curbside appeal - I see far too many people have done replacements with "squatty" windows Looks funny - would drive me crazy Good luck Eileen

Just met with the window guy this morning on this exact issue....we are using Timeline windows, and some cost comparisons in my area:

9x5 triple window 6/6...SDL $1003, GBG (grill between glass) $583

8x7 triple 9/9...SDL $1434, GBG $804

6x5 double 6/6...SDL $663, GBG $383.

We may comprimise and do SDL on the front of the house and do GBG on the sides and back, and although I'm not thrilled with this option, it's about a $3000 difference on our plan.

i think it's a very personal choice... finances play a big part in this type of choice as well. but, i'm afraid i could never recommend between the glass grills. it cheapens the look of the home. we're building our new home and i would sooner downgrade my square footage than install between the glass grills. i know a lot of people don't really pay attention to windows all that much, but in the end if you have made the choice for a more asthaetically pleasing window most people would agree it was worth it. it really makes a world of difference in the finished product. good luck with whatever you decide.

We are going w/SDL-we paid $15 per frame. All our windows are two over twos, so that's $60 each window. I feel the same way PrincessMichele (above) feels about their asthetic value. DH and I visited a new neighborhood consisting of million-dollar homes (that buys A LOT of house here in Texas:) and you'd see both examples side by side. The windows w/line between glass just didn't look as substantial--the SDL homes were much more appealing.

All that notwithstanding, you certainly find purists who'd NEVER go w/SDL--simply because it's not a true divided light. In our climate, vinyl is a better choice (for us) than wood. Happily going w/SDL windows. :)
