Gift Idea's - We barely know them

We are going to a wedding in several weeks.

It is my FIL's wife's daughter. We see them several times a year but don't really know them.

I'm looking for some interesting ideas that don't cost much. We are going with my SIL and BIL and together want to spent about $100.00

They do have a registry but all the cheaper items have been bought. I have never been to their home so I have no idea what their style is. I asked my FIL's wife but she tells me to look at the registry.

They are in their early thirties and have lived together for the past year.

We may just get them a gift certificate to Home Depot but I hate it when they know how much I spent.

Any ideas?

Of course, if you buy from the registry, they know how much you spent, too.

Look on the registry for things that it never hurts to have *more* of -- like towels, sheets, etc. -- and go ahead and get some of them, even if they have already been "taken".

Or look at the registry and see what that tells you. What style of china did they pick? What colors? Maybe you can find a serving piece that would look nice w/ it.

I bought a plum-colored glass serving bowl for a friend who'd chosen a fruit-and-leaves type of modern-lined china.

I bought floral placemats to go w/ a sage green dinnerware w/ curvy tendrils on the edges.

LOL, Melati--I WISH!!! We'll probably have to make that direction a whole *nuther plan*--maybe next-year's anniversary! Dave--thank you so much, too!! I'm definitely going to have to have 'a plan'!! Now, tell me this *you guys* with the extensive collections you already have--what in the world do I bring you, that you DO NOT ALREADY HAVE??? I'm getting nervous!!! My 'picken's are such 'small potatoes' compared with anyone you've suggested visiting, including yourselves!! LOL btw--do NOT fear--I would NEVER ask you for a piece of your hosta! I only tease on the forum, with such boldness, (and with those I've already 'traded' with) but in 'real life' I'd be horrified to do that!! Just not the way I wuz brought up--southern roots, ya know--well, maybe you don't but trust me--they're still in 'there'!!! :o) And, if I go over a certain one you have--I AM NOT hinting for you to bring out the shovel, okay? I'm just enthusiastic about ANYTHING I see that I think is awesome, admirable, or beautiful, and for the life-of-me, I cannot refrain from letting my appreciation be known!!! :o/ So--DO NOT--DO NOT let my enthusiasm make you squirm nor compelled to dig up a perfectly beautiful clump, destroying it's symmetry for the rest of the season, JUST to give me a piece of it, cause I'm excited by it's maturity and beauty!!! Seriously--I will, undoubtedly, LOVE them ALL!!! And, I can wait to get whatever it is I may be 'blown away' about, someday--but--I may be taking copious notes, if you don't mind!! ;o)

I like the idea of the books for the GKs. I love to give the gift of books, and am known for either books or B&N GC for all occasion gifts. lol We purchased books for my nephew about sharks and some other animal (can't remember which animal the other was) that had small scale see-through 3D model of the featured animal in the book. When you turned the pages, it pictured different significant organs, etc. and cool facts about why each animal had differing skin and the like, as well as a child's level explanation of the part each animal played in the wild. Very cool books, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I found them. I am thinking it was NOT a book store, but someplace like Sam's club. My nephew loved those books and found taking the model apart and learning about marine life. My FIL has always had a boat (yacht), and we've spent loads of time seeing many out of the way places. At times it is hard to keep kids of a certain age occupied while at sea. These books were unlike anything I've ever seen and I spend alot of time in book stores. Any event, your post about the kids made me think about these books I found for my young nephew, but it has been at least 5 years now. I've done a google search and have come up empty. They make a great gift for children who are interested in animals. If I can find the name of the books or publisher, I will post since they would make great gifts for any child.

Oh, yum, nothing like some nice 5 month old chips and salsa, Haley! lol I hope your BIL has a strong constitution. :) I never caught MIL regifting the things we had given her, but when we cleaned out her house after she died, I think I came across about 3 things that we had given her over the course of 20+ years. And we had given her nice, pricey things. She kept one afghan, one of those heavy woven ones, and a clock made of inlaid woods and a handmade quilting basket. I remember snorting out loud once when she exclaimed "oh you always give the best gifts!". Woody and I both laughed because she never displayed or used barely any of the things we gave her but was always so proud of the tacky junk that her great-nieces and nephews sent up, stuff like the toilet piggy bank that "flushed" when you put money in it. Yeah, she liked that a lot. lol And the motion activated frog. I regift, too, though, so I don't really have a problem with it IF the regift fits the recipient. Otherwise you're just being cheap. I would hate to get caught at it because I don't like hurting someone's feelings, but I am not going to keep something around me that I don't like and won't use, I'll donate it to the thrift shop if I don't have a friend that would like it.

Good point @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK ie the tubers are able to store (some) moisture. even Dahlias won't survive if they're allowed to get dehydrated. Well ignorance is bliss as my potted dahlias, as stored dormant tubers, never get added water from mid October until February...in fact no water until I see a sign of growth (after being brought up and into the warmth and light). (I guess there must be enough moisture in soil through the whole time it is dormant?)

I've always given a gorgeous mohair lap blanket for those occasions...perhaps a bit more than $100, but they do go on sale...and a good bottle of wine, a movie rental coupon, and they have a nice snuggly evening!
If they have a garden, then any number of tools and supplies would be great... a beautiful emboidered or traditional plain tablecloth and matching napkins is nice, as most people don't purchase that for themselves when they're starting out....and yes...I agree with both gals when they suggested to get 'ideas' from the registry. Match other useful items and goodness knows, just because they want that $300 queen sheet set, it doesn't mean they won't appreciate that $100 good quality white hotel-type set! A classic! Don't forget blankets! Give another in the colors of their room or a neutral...they'll need them for guests, too!

I'm partial to art glass. Orrefors, Murano, or something I find at a gallery. I can get a good size bowl for around $100.

I probably wouldn't get this for a young couple, but it works well for an older couple who has most everything they need.

By the way, I meant to post that I get these good prices on E-Bay, not in a store. If the bowl still has a box, I give it as-is. If not, I fill it with flowers or truffles and give it.
