Greek wedding

Hi,
My son is marrying into a wonderful, large, very traditional Greek family this summer. We are hosting the rehearsal dinner at the reception venue, in a room which is quite modern.

I was wondering if there are any traditions we should know... And I am looking for a way to meld the strong Irish heritage my son feels with the Greek culture that will be abundant.

When your son is marrying into a strong culture like your future DIL's, I would not try to compete with it, but rather do something totally different for the rehearsal dinner. If you want to include Irish foods or themes, do so. Make it a fun melding of heritages. Guests will be exposed to the Greek side at the wedding and reception, so you don't want to do the same thing or try to do the same things and possibly fall short. If you know the groom's mother, you might ask her if there is anything traditionally done at a rehearsal dinner that you can include. You could also ask the groom. Most of all, keep it classy, have fun and enjoy.

Also find out if there is anything that might be considered bad luck that you should avoid.

My sister-in-law is Turkish. Apparently, it is considered bad luck for a car with a bride in it to drive backwards, you know, like backing out of a parking spot.

So right after the wedding, my brother was going to drive away with his new bride, but the bride's brothers had boxed his car in so that he'd have to back up. Which he couldn't do, or he'd jinx the marriage. I think he had to pay each brother about $10 to move his car.

So while you might not want to include Greek customs, you might also want to avoid anything that might look as if you want the marriage to fail!

And I agree with sweet pea--don't make the rehearsal dinner Greek--make it your own. Your family's culture is as important as her's.

I live in Southern California which used to be and again almost is a part of Mexico. In the hispanic areas you'll see a basket right next to the toilet bowl usually full of waste paper not from washing your hands. I go to an auto repair shop where he has a sign that reads: Amigos: After you wash your ass, put the paper in the toilet, not the basket, this is not Mehico. This stems from small rural villages who use human waste to fertilize their fields, along with the usual animal waste. In order not to have a mess of old toilet paper on their fields, they put the toilet paper in a waste basket. As for supplementing orchids diet, I do that regularly with Horse Manure which I compost in a garbage barrel. I just put a little on top of the root ball and occasionally make 'Horsie Tea' which gets sprayed on them in lieu of fertilizer. When you are at my place watch out for brown rain. A friend of mine was over the other day to get some plants and in the process of trimming something he gave himself a small superficial scratch. He went nuts asking me for Hydrogen Peroxide, Iodine and A and D lotion. I have all of the above somewhere but pretended I did not because this display of fear and horror over absolutely nothing was not only ridiculous but also amusing. I told him I could get the dogs to lick it but he declined. This guy is a perfect man living in an imperfect world. I think your advice is good, I'll start saving dog turds, maybe one should also start a 'Dog Turd Board' (DTB) to regulate this new industry. I wonder if the Chinese could produce dog turds cheaper than us and ruin this new enterprise. I can see Al Gore being the president of the new DTB, so good for the environment and probably will have a beneficial impact on global warming. New Kitchen Stood the TEST of Boxing Day Party

Glad everything worked out for you. Our Boxing Day party didn't quite go as planned. Our power went out!! Had about 30 candles going in the LR, DR, kitchen. Roaring fire in the fireplace to keep warm-live in Buffalo, NY area. Luckily had plenty of wine and other spirits!! DH had to get the grill from the back barn/shed, brought it into the garage and cooked the sirloin tip roast on it!! Have a gas stove so able to light the burners with fireplace lighter to do potatoes, asparagus, gravy. Luckily rolls and salad no problem. While waiting in the dark a herd of about 10 deer crossed from the back woods into our back yard heading towards our pond. Watched them for 10 minutes or so. Very peaceful sight. Finally roast done, sitting down to eat with candles surrounding us and-the power comes back on and everyone cheers!! BTW everyone, myself included, thinks that was the best tasting roast ever. So in a way, my kitchen also stood the test!!

For wood floors, I use Murphy Oil Soap. Lovely stuff! I am also a fan of Simple Green for most cleaning jobs (doesn't quite do it for hard core bathroom stuff, though). If she has a glass cook top, I highly recommend Weiman's Cook Top, the daily cleaner one. The hard core one needs a cleaner to remove the cleaner.... Barkeeper's Friend is always good to keep around. I also use vinegar but I dilute it if I am going to use it near grout or concrete, and clean it up immediately. There are certain countertop surfaces you need to be careful around, but I have quartz, Corian, and I used to have laminate in the old home - no problem with any of those.

Greek Wedding Fountain Needs HELP!

We painted our 3 tier fountain a bluish / green / gray - verdigris - color. We used swimming pool paint . It has been part of our landscape for 25 (?) plus years. The sound of the water when working outside in the garden is heavenly, as well as refreshing on a hot day. We ,also, love the sound from our front porch when relaxing there. We can subtly light it as a focal point in the evening. I think Maureen made an important point in saying that the organic design which is surrounding the fountain is what makes its loveliness cohesive with the overall landscape.

That is what I am trying to find out... what is bad luck or offensive...
There will be almost 100 people there right from Greece and I am stressed about not offending them. They had a ceremony for the engagement party with an exchange of rings and certain foods had to be served. I read that it is bad luck to wear black in the church, but that is all I found. Her family is so sweet, they just say whatever you want to do is fine.

All I know is that the bridal parties should always be done on the dates that fall on odd numbers for good luck.
