Caned barrel chair; upholstery redo. Pics!

I got the chair FREE off CL. Used 1 yard of $6 fabric, a can of .99cent paint, hot glue sticks from Dollar Tree, cotton piping from a 550yd spool($5 thrift store purchase years ago, lifetime supply), free foam from a leather ottoman being thrown out.....Viola!

Wow, thanks for responding. I'm pretty sure the imprint says Stickley, but could be wrong. It appears 'branded' into the wood underneath the seat. The chair is very heavy. Solid wood which I'm going to try to sand and stain. The upholstery was beautiful. Green silk, very stuffed cushions. Very feminine. It looks so abused because I was trying to sand the wood. It's also very low to the ground. I thought it might have been a child's chair. Thanks again for the link. Jane

Thank you, my3dogs! My daughter is living in a semi-furnished apartment this year (it came with sofa, chair, coffee table, but no accessories or decor). Last summer, I made a lot of pillows, window treatments and several other projects for this apartment. I've included the link below. Next year, she will be living in an unfurnished apartment, so I'm trying to find bargains to coordinate with what she already has. The plaid CL sofa won't work for her with the check, since I want to use the things she already has. My plan was to slipcover the sofa with painter's drop cloths, however, I may take the plunge into upholstery. She won't need the sofa until August, so I could start with a smaller project to build up my experience and courage! Being a fellow cheapskate... I am an accountant by day, and one of my clients is a fairly high-end interior design store. One of the perks of doing their books is that I get dibs on discontinued samples. All of the fabric that I used for pillows for my daughter's apt was free - either samples or leftovers from their client projects. They use a lot of their samples themselves (have their workroom create pillows for their store) so I don't get many samples, but they have helped me with fabric / trim for my daughter's projects as well as my own home. They are way out of my price range for their custom things, but they do give me free advice and opinions on my projects! Nicole -- Oh, thank you for taking time to figure an estimate. I was thinking more like a thousand dollars. I can't find anything new that is as nice. I think it cost about $1500 from Marshall Field's in the early 1990's. (Big splurge.) It's held up beautifully, but wear is wear -- and "kids is kids". I hold off on these things, partly because we have what DH and I term "an address tax". If it were less big and heavy I'd have my DS and DIL take it and get estimates from their city address.

This post helped me in my decision for my dinette set. Thanks Mag. You made some really good points. I couldn't decide for 4 years. I ended up picking something very similar to what you mocked up here. What you said about contrasts helped me conclude that I needed a shape very similar to what you drew. I was going for Parsons, but they would have been yet another rectangle in my space. I was also able to convince DH that a plywood seat would have enough flex to be comfortable, so he was set up for a win when he sat in the chair to try it out. Because I have very dark floors I went with a honey color chaiir. My elements are very similar to the OP's. Metal bar stools, and amber /orange pendants. Dark cabinets and floors. Great job! I have almost same chairs except front legs are square tapered down & fabric is velour, got them about 40 yrs ago. Still look new. Don't really use them but fill in space nicely. That really compliments the rest of room! You did beautiful job on piping & way you used that eye popping fabric. Enjoy! Jan

suziq-92....I originally planned to look for a match, but didn't find anything "exact". So I purchased 2 off white leather club /theater chairs and I'll use this as an accent chair. I may make matching throw pillows with the left over fabric tho.....:0)
