Which way should the grains of tile run?

We are changing the tile on the Jack and Jill bathroom to a driftwood look with rectangular tiles, meant to look like wood. We currently have hardwood floors in the bedrooms that run the length of the bedroom. If you open the doors to the bathroom, and walked from room to room and put panels down in that direction, it would be perpendicular to the way the hardwood is set up.

The J&J bathroom is in the shape of a T. The top part of the T is where the sinks are and the doors are on both sides. then the bottom part has a separate door which leads to the toilet.

At first, I was thinking that the grain of the tile would go in the same direction of the grains of the hardwood. However, the tile guy suggested having them go horizontally, across the top of the T to make the bathroom look wider. If you open the door to the bathroom then it would look like the planks lead you to walk in and to the other door to the other bedroom

Which direction should they go?

Take a look at this older thread that addresses your question.

I would be inclined to do a pattern like herringbone like that first pic (my inspiration for my MBath too!), or put them on the diagonal like elphaba did. You can find her reno in "Bathrooms", here.

Also, think about the grout. Do you want it to be light so that it looks like a tile floor or blend in so that it looks more like wood?
I put it in my living room and hall and chose the darkest grout they had for more of a wood floor look.

All my hardwood floors in bedrooms and entry are perpendicular to the hallways. I've seen it both ways, but prefer that look. When I remodeled my master bath, I had them lay the wood floor perpendicular to the bedroom floor. I like how it flows and leads you into the room. I think especially with a different material, I'd want to change the direction of flow. I took this photo for someone else with the same question.

If installing diagonal there is no need to be concerned with the floor joists if it's a solid 3/4" product. However if you reside in places that have different codes for subfloors(California for example) your subfloor may be suitable for any direction because of it's thickness. Longest dimension of the area is usually the best direction, but front to back in this case would look more appealing...if I'm looking at it right.

Some more perspective.. The foyer is 12' x 13' with about 5x5 carved out for a half bath.. So beyond that picture it widens out to 13 feet.. We will have storage cabinets and cubbies to fill some of that width.. The floor is 3/4" t&g with hardie 500 cement board thinset and screwed down. The joists in the whole house run perpendicular to the hardwood floor..

I’m installing wood plank porcelain tiles 6x24. Which direction should I run the tiles? Should I run it vertical or horizontal as soon as I walk in from the main entry way? Right now I’m thinking of running it Vertical longways from front to back. IMO rethink the tile it is already a dated look and IMO never was a good choice. As for how to lay it them same as you would do a real wood floor so the long way not across and real wood is often done in a different direction when it turs a corner to go into another space.
