reupholster my bed or get a new one?

We have a very pretty 5 year old fully upholstered bed done in a pale linen. It had held up very well, even with my dogs, except for the side boards- the fabric has some "rings" where it has gotten wet. One or two of these are from wet dogs rubbing against it but some are simply from a glass of water spilling. Recently one of my dogs climbed on the edge and tore the fabric, so now I have to do something. Is there a fabric durable enough to consider recovering? What about leather (real or faux?) Or should I just cut my losses and get a new metal or wood bed? I don't want to have to recover every few years.

My style is simple and modern so many of the fabrics that may hide dirt better don't appeal to me.

Have you looked at Crypton? It's very stain resistant. My SIL is a facilities manager at a nursing home and they recovered all of the chairs in the dining room and lounge in Crypton. It isn't cheap but it is durable and comes in a fairly wide selection.

I'd be temped to look at an indoor/outdoor fabric, like from Sunbrella, and reupholster in that.

Thanks y'all! I'm glad to have people to talk to who understand the excitement. My husband just rolls his eyes and laughs at me. :P Well, one reason I'm waiting is because I will have a big chunk of time that week. I was also trying to time it to be about six weeks before frost. Usually we are baking hot this time of year, but this year has been different so I may actually be able to start a little earlier...was thinking about getting started on a few things this weekend. Oh, and I am also waiting to make sure the grass is good and dead first - I did the layered newspaper method with this bed. ciberisis, even with all the planning I bet you I still end up moving everything at least a couple of times. Oh well, that's part of the fun of it too! Oh...I just realized it's really only 8 days until my vacation. Eeeeeee! :D

i have an antique brass bed, in a guest room, with the same kind of side rails. i think they might be put in upside down (in the photo) and, therefore, are on the wrong side of the bed. my bed was put together like that by my last mover and was recently discovered by my daughter when she was here visiting. she wasn't able to get the mattress and springs off so just put short boards at the corners to keep them from falling off. i got new carpet since then and i asked the installers to put the rails on correctly when they reassembled the bed. sorry this is so long!..... i don't know if that was done or not and the bedroom is on a different level of the house than i am on and i am in a wheelchair so i can't go check. regarding the length of the mattress, yes, today's mattresses are too long. i bought a used one about 25 years ago, when i bought the bed, since it was shorter than new mattresses at that time. i hope this makes some sense!

Oh, I feel your pain. My cat jumped on a table in the lr to look out the window (early in the morning, pleated shades down). She knocked over the lamp, broke the finial and the Kraft paper shade shattered all over the place. Just the shade was over $50 to replace. Wanted to strangle her!!!! Have you tried Home Goods, TJ or Marshalls? I often see great lamps there for little money. Here's another alternative for you from Crate and Barrel. elenkao, And to think I copied the ad because I thought she'd take it right down! I was only about 5 miles from the chair. I have some fabric that my sister gave me that was left over from a custom job her store did. I just saw it again, and thought it MIGHT be a possibility. I don't know where it'll eventually go, but I knew I wanted it as a 'project' chair. The 'Horchow chair' is going to have to wait til I practice on ones like this! I am in my local store where I buy most of my fabric quite often, so am always eying what they have for possible combinations for that one.

There are a number of acrylic fabrics out that wear like iron without feeling like it. We slipcovered my mother's small sofa in a creamy white one with some texture - it's a very soft, pretty ottoman weave, looks like a linen and cotton blend, and she can spill coffee, red wine, or anything on it, and it beads up and wipes away clean.

Great for someone for whom age has produced arthritic fingers and an occasional tremor or two.

Has anyone used a faux leather (vinyl?) in their home that looks good? I found a faux shagreen that seems like it could be interesting.
