Installation Advice for Kohler Stages 45 inch sink

I am finally at stage of cabinets are in and granite fabricator out for measuring. We have a kohler stages 45 inch sink to be installed undermount in a 48 inch sink base. The fabricator has never seen the stages sink much less had to install one, so he seemed a little puzzled as to best method and between he and my husband there were looking at ideas for wood bracing, however there is not much room for any error. The sink base is 48 inches, but sides are 3/4 inch plywood, so interior dimensions of cutout is 46.5 inches. So little room for bracing. I don't want any surprise problems during install so I was hoping for anyone's experience with installing this sink? Should I be looking at the sink setter or sink harness or cinqclips? Would any be better suited for this particular sink and cabinet configuration? Countertop's are 3cm granite. Thanks!

You need the spec/installation diagrams for the sink -- those are essential. The fabricator needs that document and the contractor should have it as well.

Look for this on the sink's page on the Kohler website under specifications. Urgent.

The specs and template came with the sink. Do you have framed or frameless cabinets? I have frameless and I can explain our solution.

Your template shows the measurements for the rim of sink. We basically used that measurement to provide a ledge for the rim to sit on and recessed it so it would be flush. DH attached blocking along the entire back side of the cabinet and routed just enough out of the sides of the cabinets and the blocking so the sink rim can sit on it and be flush. I also added several layers of weldbond to all of the cut surfaces (let dry between coats) to seal.

For this photo, I moved the sink so you could see the routing.

Here's a shot of the sink resting in it's notched support. Be sure the fabricator knows it should be a zero reveal.

We barely got it in the cabinetbut plumbing not yet hooked up. Using an OSB board as a counter top right now and I will just surface mount it. Later, hope to get soapstone installed and then undermount the sink. The accessories seems well made. The walnut cutting board is a hefty piece of wood! Planning to use the Karbon faucet. Hopefully get that hooked up this week sometime, but who knows as I'm very busy with work this week. I'll definitely post pics when I get a chance.

It looks like the actual sink part of the sink is 19" wide, which is 2" smaller than the sink I have now. I really like the sink I have now- it's a single bowl and much more useful than the double bowl sink I used to have. However I think that what I have now is about the smallest I would be comfortable with for cleaning purposes. The Kohler is a LOT deeper than my current sink, but I think the small bowl size would be an issue cleaning. I'd rather have the whole sink be a bowl and just prep on the counter like I do now.

I was hoping scrappy would join the conversation. I just snapped a pic of mine and you can see it does not splash with the faucet on regular flow. I believe you need to choose the faucets carefully to fit your use, especially if wall mounted. One thing I'd like to mention though is that I would not want to give up the shelf to hand washing. That is my favorite prep area. As I've used my sink for six months now, I've developed patterns; I use the right 3/4's for prep and the area to the left of the drain for dirty/transitional stuff and hand washing. Hand washing is a main reason I went with the Kohler. My DH is not trainable regarding this and it's one of the reasons we chose the stages. I did consider this in the planning stage and have my fridge to the right of the landing counter, the trash and recycle directly below the center of the sink and DW to the left. We considered two faucets but ultimately went with one Kohler Karbon. It reaches all corners and i love that I do not have to hold it. I love it as much as my sink. The shelf is very handy during prep. That's where I open packages, put my prep scraps, actually it changes jobs continually and I have to say it is the most active part of my sink and I would not want hand washing there. I also place my small dish drainer there for cleanup. This is my typical setup except I usually use small colanders on the grate, then slide them under my cutting boards to keep the left clear for hand washing. In your case, I would consider a wall mount Karbon on the shelf side and the Hi-rise on the left.

I thought I'd consolidate my info that is in a few threads and add photos that may help your brother. Much will depend on your cabinet structure. We first joined the 36" sink base and the 24" cab which I converted from a sink base by adding drawer hardware and drawer pullouts on the interior. He notched the sides of the two joined cabinets to accommodate the ledge. underside after install. The provided template shows the measurements for the rim of sink. We basically used that measurement to provide a ledge or harness for the rim to sit on and recessed it so it would be flush. DH attached blocking along the entire back side of the cabinet and routed just enough out of the sides of the cabinets and the blocking, so the sink rim can sit on it and be flush. I added several layers of weldbond to all of the cut surfaces (let dry between coats) to seal. I also siliconed all seams and drill holes in the sink cabinets. I did this to prevent moisture absorption. The clips that come with the Stages are attached to the underside of your counter and push up on the lip. He wasn't able to use all of them because of access and space issues. We have a wood counter. Our sink was initially installed in marble and they refused to use the clips. Kohler Karbon - be sure to have your brother take a good look at the hardware and install instructions. DH had no room for his tool. Had we placed the holes correctly we would have avoided lots of frustration. Hope this helps!

Thanks for responses, yes the template and install instructions came with sink, but they use clips that require attachment to the granite underside, however not enough room in cabinet to do so and I don't know if these clips are the best and are some other options. Thanks for the pictures above, that does help. I do think our cabinets are framed though, not sure if makes a difference.

The clips that are included are not for a stone install, rather for laminate or wood. I was going to use the harness, but it ended up not needed since our first fabricator told us the sink rim had to be flush, therefore recessed. It is a very solid support, basically an mdf/wood harness.

Yes that is what my husband and fabricator were thinking basically a wood harness around outside of cabinet. I just wanted to check around and make sure not overlooking anything.
