Crown Molding different shade than cabinets?

The installers started working on installing crown molding on our cabinets between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling.

There seems to be a very noticable difference between the finish on the cherry cabinets and the finish on the cherry crown molding.

They're going to contact the cabinet rep...we'll see where it goes.

We don't think of ourselves as anal-retentive, but it's noticable to us as soon as we come around the corner and look at the kitchen.

Are we just being too picky?...have we lived in the land of our blue-painted cabinets so long that we just aren't used to the natural shades/grain differences in naturally finished wood?

I would prefer everything to be white, but that is just me. You can always live with it for a week and see if you like having the mix. If not, paint it all!

I think it does come down to the fact that I'm not 100% certain of his competency. We've had so many incompetent people involved in this remodel (costing us time and money) that I just don't want to take a chance on this. For example: --Contractor's assistant decided to cut drywall ON TOP of the piece of MARBLE we just had cut for the master bath shower bench (you can imagine the outcome of that) --Contractor's sub / electrician knocked holes in newly hung drywall in order to access what he wanted in order to avoid doing it the right way due to being "too much work." This same person also cracked/chipped about 8 slate floor tiles in the basement while working at the electrical panel. --Floor company took 3 weeks to complete hardwood staining/refinishing only to majorly screw up (I posted photos in another thread) the floor, leaving us to find another company to do it all over again. We've since been living in our basement for over 2 months. So...I could go on and on and on - those are just a few of many things. And so far we haven't asked our contractor to pay for even ONE thing he or his subs have screwed up. We simply want him to finish the job and GET OUT! Since everyone involved in our remodel seems to be having financial issues, we're lucky if anyone even shows up to work, much less have any idea when our "5-6 month" project which has stretched into 10 so far will be finished. ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.

I agree....stand your ground!

However, a couple of questions:

Is the wood cherry (your post seems to indicate it is) as opposed to a different wood w/a cherry finish?

How long have your cabinets been up?

Real cherry wood darkens over time...the difference in the first 2 or 3 weeks or so is very noticeable!

Is it possible your cabinets have been up long enough to darken but the crown molding hasn't darkened to match yet?

Thanks for the replies.

The cabinets are actually LIGHTER than the crown molding, so it's not an "aging" thing. Cabinets have been up for less than a week, and the area that it's most noticable is the area that faces AWAY from any natural light.

The rep called and left a message for us to call back, so we'll see what Kraftmaid has to say.

Is it possible the crown molding was milled awhile ago and sat in a warehouse somewhere? That could account for a color different.

Are your cabinets glazed? We have Merrilat cherry cabinets in our master bath. They have a nutmeg glaze, but the molding was not glazed. Maybe your molding is glazed and the cabinets are not?

The different wood species would not surprise me either. We put maple Kraftmaid into a bathroom. One of the doors on one cabinet was a different style and was done in birch, not maple. QA/QC is not so good with this company.
