Can you get one of those $5 sample jars of Antique White and paint some pieces of scrap wood or even poster board (tape whole posterboard over doors and cut into strips and tapes over your trim work). I know it's not the real thing, but doesn't cost that much and would give you an idea if you're on the right track or not.

If you have to go back to the drawing board, it's better to have wasted just $5-10 for a sample and poster board than $50 for a gallon of real paint.

I've bought several of the $5 sample jars of SW Paint for the wall colors, and I probably will do the same for the Antique Linen, but I'm not feeling very confident in my ability to read the colors at this point. The SW salesperson told me the Creamy had red in it, and I don't see that at all, so maybe I'm color blind :)

It's hard to tell what whites are tinted with unless you see a card with all of the different whites on them to compare one with the other. Once they're on the wall or trim just by themselves, they usually look just white.

It's good to ask what they're tinted with because if you want a warm white, e.g., you wouldn't want one tinted with blue, green or gray.

I am most familiar with Benjamin Moore colors. Their Navajo white goes toward the yellow--(very creamy) and their China White goes toward the gray (also a very nice color---I have both in my houses.)

Do buy small jars of paint (Benjamin Moore offers them) and try them out.

Also, a tip my decorator gave me. Buy a sample of a paint color and paint (two coats) the paint on a large piece of poster board. Hold up the poster board in the area you will be painting--during all times of day. This makes it SO much easier to choose a color.

I used antique white for trim in our last house. The house was large and had lots of natural light. The wall color was Believable Buff and the ceilings were Dover white.

I though it looked great together.

In our current home- much smaller and less light I used Dover White for the trim and ceilings.

Thanks so much for all the great advice. I guess I'm looking for affirmation that the Antique Trim isn't too dark to use as a trim color just as much as I'd like to be sure that the Antique Trim will work with the Creamy ceilings. I just can't ask my dh to paint the ceilings again! They were BM Linen White before, but I thought it was a bit yellow. Since we had some roller marks and I wanted to change the wall color anyway, we repainted the ceilings Creamy.

Susie - I definitely am with you as far as the sample boards. I had dh cut a large piece of drywall into 4 large sample boards to test out the wall colors - I've been placing them throughout the house all week! Now I need to do the same for the trim, I suppose.

Dogridge - thanks for posting your experience with the Antique White as a trim color. My house is a larger open floor plan, but it's a one story that doesn't get a lot of natural light in many of the rooms, so I should probably buy some sample trim to test out the darker trim color throughout the house. My sister has a very off-white trim in her house, and it's gorgeous, but it's also a new house with extremely high ceilings - not a 1963 ranch!
