Our contractor came by today and had some good news for us. He said that he can center the sinks over our existing cabinets, and that he has no idea why that wasn't done in the first place. He said he will build a frame for the mirror that will match the color of the vanity. He's talking about a substantial 4" frame because he wants the mirror to become a focal point instead of an eyesore. He's considering building some shelves for the middle of the mirror, or optionally hanging a few pendants from the ceiling to break that up a little. He said he will have his electrician come over and show us some options for lighting. He said the mirror is worth about $1200 and he doesn't think we would gain much by taking it down and putting up two separate mirrors. He's going to sketch it out for us in the next few days, when I get that I will post it. Thanks to you guys I was at least able to articulate what I saw as a problem rather than just say "grrr I hate this mirror" lol

Thanks to all your wonderful ideas and for giving me a new perspective on our bath tile. Parma, I had to look up "moorish" -- and you're right -- how cool! As much as I agree with the tans/browns idea to disguise the tile -- dainaadele, your photoshopping was awesome -- I think I've decided to go outside my comfort level and embrace the uniqueness of this tile (like someone here mentioned) vs. disguising it. Plus, after 12 years with a brown bathroom (we had tan walls and brown rugs and towels), we're ready for a change. I went to BM today and had help finding "sweet innocence", a grey/blue tone vs blue/grey. I just put a second coat of sample paint on and I'll see if I still like it tomorrow, but I think it's a keeper. The idea of making the grout a darker color still interests me, but I have no experience doing this. What product would I use? Is it hard to apply? Are the results on such old grout consistent? Would it hold up in the shower? Maybe I should leave the grout alone if I'm going with the lighter wall color, yes? Laurie, the darker blue/gray color on the left is Lowe's Valspar Woodlawn Silver Brook (5001-1B). It has a green undertone that I hadn't realized til I put it on the wall. I've never worked with grey paints before and boy are they tricky! I'll post pics when I'm done to get your consensus as to whether I pulled off a moorish, contemporary, warm, and fresh updated master bath! :)

Thanks so much!! Yes, I painted all of those. The vintage ones were either missing their paints, or the paints weren't useable, so I just kind of made it up with acrylics. I did each pair in the same color scheme, but mixed it up between the pairs. More so because I wasn't happy with it until the last set, than trying to be creative. LOL! That painting for the bathroom had that background drybrushed in the directions, but the whole thing looked a little flat when it was finished. I added a crackle medium to the whole surface, then stained it with a glaze. The whole thing took a few hours of painting each evening for a few weeks. I'm working on one now that's going to take months, if I'm lucky. Tacky or trite? I don't know, but I enjoy doing them. I have a high-stress career, and I find it very relaxing to just chill out and dabble in the paints. And (to paraphrase Magna) I'd rather have something tacky and trite that I did myself, than something ugly bought from the store. Pal, that's a wonderful display! A little too dark and brooding for my taste, but you've shown off the art and set the tone perfectly! I love the blonde girl with the black cat. It looks like Frank -my very black cat.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves a good looking stone! I LOVE ROCKS! As much as I love plants... Sometimes I think I spend more time in the rock section at the nursery staring longingly at giant boulders. They have these gorgeous pink ones with pyrite streaks through them, and beautiful white flagstones with tons of mica glimmering in the sun... I stare at the holey limestone, thinking a cute little fern would look adorable growing out of those holes. Which would look perfect in our front landscaping near the house to break up the space. Problem is, 14 cents a pound adds up when its a half-ton rock and I need a few of them! My husband just looks at me, with a specific "look" that says "are you done staring at rocks yet?" without saying a word... Every time I drive by a construction site, with mounds of dirt and natural limestone I'm tempted to stop and ask for some of the rocks. I need to keep a set of gardening gloves in my car... After my parents built their (downsized) home, I nabbed all the rocks from their newly unearthed property and from the creek that runs through the woods that I could manage on trips home to visit and lined a garden bed with them in my own yard 4 hours away... It drove my husband crazy hauling rocks across the state. 16 years later, we moved and I TOOK ALL OF MY ROCKS! I also dug up and took all of my Japanese iris that my mom had given me, that were from her mom's garden. Every single rock and iris. Luckily, after this long, my husband understood my sentimentality to it all when we moved, but I don't think that stopped him from grumbling under his breath about it when moving the bins of said rocks... Right after we moved in, I was lining the front bed of mulch with my rocks that I had clearly brought with me, and one of our new neighbors came over and expressed a similar sentimentality. He collects rocks wherever he goes and puts them under a tree in his front yard, each one has a story... I shared that all of my rocks from limestone to granite are from various parts of my parent's property that I couldn't bear to leave behind on the other side of town. BTW - the iris are loving their new home and thriving better than I've ever seen them and my grandma's thumb was so green it was evergreen... Well, now that I've been thinking about rocks, I think I need a trip to the nursery to visit my holey limestone friends later this afternoon.
