Help Me Decide, Wouldya!? (Photo)

Bought a bunch of old gold colored tarnished flatware. Had decided to take an old flywheel from a tractor (or very old car!) and turn it into a windchime. Even if the sound wasn't very melodic, thought it would be a neat idea. As I was laying it out to see how it was gonna look, Twinkie (my DH) and I both thought that it looked pretty cool just as it was. What about it? Would you mount it on something and use it as is, or would you make a windchime?

I like the look of it as it is, i would put it on a wall, would make an interest topic of conversation.

I like it like that (know a welder?), but also like the idea of a windchime (although the flywheel seems a bit large for that).

I normally lurk once in a great while but thought I'd chime in here. I agree with the others. I like the craftsman style door the best with your house and also think your door hardware and light fixtures are too ornante for craftsman style. We just got the occupancy permit on our house which is also craftsman-inspired. We used a fiberglass craftsman style door from ThermaTru (model CCA230). We plan to use the gel stain on it (once the weather is nicer) so that it looks like wood but it can be painted, too. The door is available without the dentil shelf or with one of two dentil options. You can also get different kinds of glass to go in the 3 windows or keep the plain. The door is my second favorite part of our house and I highly recommend it. It would look great with your house. You can Google the model number and manufacture to find pictures of it. For the lights, we used a very simple jelly jar light by the door and double bullet-style lights for the sitting area of the porch, both with a black finish. I would have loved to use more square craftsman style lights for those areas but we were on a tight budget and figured they'd be easy to change later if we wanted. For the door hardware, we went with a simple lever style with a rectangle backplate and a separate deadbolt, all in a matte black finish.

artkillery, you changed the peak of the gable between your last post and the one at 9:13 am. If the second post is correct, I would change back to having the front gable in stucco and the two flanking masses all in stone. The reason is that if the gable does not reach very high, stone all the way up may make it look heavy and squat. I would ask about the roof pitch on that gable and only use the heavier material if it is higher, not lower. JMO! (But, I think whatever you do the house will look marvelous, we tend to obsess over the details here :)

Thanks, all! I'm thinking through all the options.... I don't really want to take stained trim out of the two upstairs bedrooms because upstairs is really where I like the stained trim the best. Feels very cozy to me up there with the sloping ceilings, and just works. Part of the reason I don't love it so much downstairs, and especially in the dining room is because of the wide trim around the sliding glass door that is a different color and type of wood -- it just clashes, plus the built-ins are painted white, and it's a a mish-mash. Here's a scenario: What if I painted baseboards throughout the first floor of the house, and also the window and door trim in the dining room and kitchen, but left the stained window and door trim in the living room and rest of the first floor? Would that look janky or jarring? (Maybe I should note that we have quite a bit of wood furniture that my dad made throughout the house, so there would still be wood notes in the dining and kitchen.)

Thanks for your input. I'll definitly be doing a whiter trim no matter what color I go with. I'm considering a blue-gray as you mentioned. I tried uploading a photo. Benjamin moore whale gray. Or Sherwin Williams smoky blue. I tried uploading photos but it never works. Really frustrating. Normally I would want something to pop out of the landscape but in person there something nice about driving up to it. It's private and woody so it feels tucked in. If I went with sage it doesn't have to be this exact shade and it would have a lighter trim.

Lydia, if I go with the idea of a windchime we're gonna drill small holes in the handles of the silverware and tie them with clear fishing type line in the holes of the flywheel. It's mostly for the "look" rather than the sound, I'm sure! LOL

Steal my idea - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! LOL

How about a photo holder? You could mount the wheel to the wall, bend the spoons and forks at the mouth end so you can slide a photo in, attach the utensils by the hand part to the wheel. You might be able to use liquid nails to adhere them to the wheel, not sure but liquid nails is amazing stuff. OOOOHHh you could even paint the wheel and the utensils to match your decor! what about a clock? you can maybe recyle from another clock? or buy a new clock kit?

My DH suggested a clock, also. So far, it's still laying in the floor! LOL

Nah, it would look AWFUL..........send it ALL to me and I will use it on the TABLE!!!!!!
