new uses for bowl serving bowls

My sister went to an auction. In order to buy the "item" she wanted, she ended up with a stack of lovely bowls. They are of all styles, footed, frosted, pressed glass, ect. Most are the "serving" type, no ceral bowls here. So what else can we do with these? The "smaller" ones, we found worked well as pillar candle holders. But the the big ones have us stumped. We look forward to any ideas for more ueses.

Without seeing them I am going to suggest bases for totems?

Maybe not new uses, but,
A nice look is to place floral foam in the bottom and make fresh or artificial arrangements.

If they are very large drill a hole in the bottom and use as a ceiling light cover.

For the holidays, place battery operated fairy lights in them then pile glass ornaments.

Fancy pet dishes.

When going to a pot luck, use it for your favorite dish, then leave the bowl as a hostess gift.

To hold soaps, TP or hand towels in the bath.

To hold magazines on the coffee table

If new enough, use in place of place of a gift basket.

I always have a large bowl of fresh fruit in the kitchen, it encourages everyone to eat healthy

Thanks for the reply. We had already looked at the spec sheets for the two, and checked all over the Toto website and other places to see if they really are the same bowls. I asked over on plumbing too, and someone there very nicely posted a Toto product bulletin that answered the question perfectly: they are interchangeable. My first thought when I hear "steamer" is some kind of Chinese dumpling as well! Probably because that's what I use mine for mostly! A good "cheat" for them is to just cook up some ground beef or turkey (I don't eat pork, but the traditional methods use ground pork) flavored with minced garlic & ginger, some sliced scallions and chopped water chestnuts, some soy sauce, sesame oil, maybe a touch of five spice powder - whatever flavors you like - then get a package of those refrigerator biscuits. The regular one's not the huge "grand" ones. Flatten out the biscuit, put a tablespoon or so of your mixture in the middle then bring up all the sides around and pinch it at the top to kind of seal the dough, then steam them. They're more filling than using a traditional dim sum wrapper, but not everyone has access to those. I think the biscuits are a "cheat" that works very well. Have fun at your party! Lisa

Single Bowl vs. Double Bowl

I have a Franke VNX160. It fits a 36in cabinet and has 2 bowls in a 2/3-1/3 configuration. The big side is large enough to soak the grates from the cooktop. The small side is large enough to rinse veggies, drain pasta and the like. My old double bowl was a PITA. It was about the same size as the Franke but had 2 equal bowls. Neither was big enough to soak anything large. I think there are 2 factors to consider. The first is how wide a sink can your space accommodate. If the sink base cabinet is less than 30in, you should probably go with a single bowl. The bowls in a double bowl will likely be too small. If the sink base is 33in or larger, you might want to consider a double bowl with the 2/3-1/3 arrangement. Take your casserole to the store to see if it fits. But when push comes to shove, just choose what *you* want since *you* have to live and work with it.

Hi,

I just found this site while browsing around GW.
I am usually on the Home Decorating forum here at GW.
I've already found wonderful ideas just from reading the first page of T2T!

As for Large bowls/Platters---if you garden, you can drill a small drainage hole in the bottom, glue a terra cotta plant saucer to an upside down candle holder and then put the bowl with plants on top.

I just finished doing this with some Found & GoodWill candle holders. I have some larger mis-matched serving bowls and platters and I've run out of space inside so had to find a way to use them outside.

Once painted, I'll place some of the drilled serving bowls on top of the clay saucers and fill them with pretty colored plants.

I haven't gotten around to painting mine yet but here's an example that might help you with your serving bowls.

I have used serving bowls for a bird bath. Just attatched to a vase or some type of base. Used the GE silicone glue and saves on the drilling.(always seems to take forever).
