The trees and such are small but for $2 to $5, about what you would expect to maybe a little larger. Some of the small plants and groundcovers come in pots - I'm pretty sure the kinnickinnick does and that's a pretty decent sized plant for the price. The one's that are surprisingly small are the things like ferns, camas, etc. Then they are pretty much a leaf with a decent root system in a baggie. If the plant is supposed to be dormant in February, don't expect much size from the plant you purchase.

Terri, so you mean you'll be in on the 28th? I *would* say let's get together, because I'd love to meet you at long last, but DD has *two* doctor's appts that day--ARGH... I notice Amy mentioned lighting shops -- are you interested specifically in lighting? Or what other kinds of prey are you seeking? :) More specifics would help focus our suggestions, along with what areas you *aren't* interested in re/visiting. Ikea is a hike, all the way out to the airport. If you haven't been there before, or even if you have, an easy place to start is the Art Museum, which is always beautiful and restful, with nice bathrooms in which to freshen up from a long drive (and has a sweet little 20th c. wing, which we just went to for the first time in September)...and if you're into buying art as a souvenir, there's the Rental/Sales Gallery just across the street to the north! DD and I go in there sometimes when we go to the Museum as a more accessible 'gallery' where we can really get up close to the works. Of course, they're not timeless masterpieces, but they're high-level professional regional artists, which is worth it to me. On a whole 'nother track, over on the east side, if you want to go to Hawthorne or Sellwood, there is the Sellwood Antiques Mall, which is somewhat 'cooked', and Hawthorne, which is more 20th c. vintage. Goodwill is actually opening up a new 20th c. "vintage boutique" (to the great anger of many of us experienced goodwillers -- we call it the end of goodwill at Goodwill but that's just us :)) the day before you come -- it will still be having its grand opening and might be a fun scene. It's on Hawthorne on the east side. I can get you the address if you are interested. And olychick, are you in Portland? I could easily imagine that you said that earlier and I have forgotten it...

Micucci's is amazing. My mom has been going there forever. Sun Market is on Congress st. Hmmm my direction giving skills might leave something to be desired... Sort of near the museum and MECA. Do you know where June Fitzpatrick's smaller gallery was? It's around the corner from there. I haven't been to LeRoux - though I wonder if that is the place my mom has mentioned. Is it a restaurant supply place? I will keep an eye out for the Maine Chef sauces. The yuzu kosho sauce I got is delicious! Tangy spicy! As far as the storm I was stocked up but we didn't get hit to badly. Though it was very windy! I was snowshoeing with my puppy and suddenly realized he had run home. Too much for him and not much is! I haven't seen moose meat for sale - usually if you like game meat hunters will provide (if they like you). A friend's 12 year old got a moose a few years ago. It was bigger than him.

I am also unsure what you mean by 'looks like a traditional rose'. Doubleness? shrub size? flower size? One consideration in making your choice; I mostly try to avoid roses that bloom when the Japanese beetles are at their worst, so many of mine are spring only or spring and fall blooming. The beetles trash the blooms and I am unwilling the use a systemic insecticide which will kill all insects including pollinators which are drawn to the flowers. I exclusively buy own root roses based on experience in my gardens. I have tried several grafted and they never do as well for me. IME, even deeply buried grafts haven't always outcompeted the understock and the own root are really easy here. Mad_gallica has had different experiences but has different growing conditions (especially soil) than I do. She is much more of a rose expert. I grow roses that have healthy foliage in my garden and like you enjoy good scent. I don't grow hybrid teas since they tend to be fussy/disease prone and many aren't hardy enough here. Some ideas to check out that might fit your requirements: I have a double white rugosa currently, but at a previous house I had Hansa and one other I've forgotten the name of. Wonderful scent, rambunctious blooms, some overlap with the J. beetles. The ones I've grown need a good-sized space. I have one striped rose, Rosa gallica Versicolor AKA Rosamundi which also has lovely, wafting scent and is a spring once-bloomer. I really like Zephirine Drouhin which for me blooms spring and late summer, nicely bracketing the J. beetles. Lovely scent, double pink blooms, and for me a short climber since the canes often die back to the snow line. The Canadian Explorer roses are worth checking out, though mine (John Davis) has bloom that at least partly coincides with the Japanese beetles, and the scent isn't strong enough to waft well, though nice when sniffed from up close. I have a Red Eden rose which has a very double, classic old rose look and nice scent. In my garden it gets killed back to the snow line most winters, so it is a shrub that doesn't start blooming until after the Japanese beetles are done and then blooms constantly throughout the late summer and fall. Rated as zone 6 in at least one spot I looked, but didn't have any problems with -23 and a week of the highest temperatures being single digits at my house winter before last or almost no snow cover last winter. I also grow an old rose (came with the house which dates from 1850, though I don't know how long the rose has been here) which has 4' canes, very double light pink flowers and lightly rose-scented foliage as well as strongly wafting blooms. It blooms in early summer and is fairly common at old houses around here, so someone in your area may have it if you keep your eyes open. It's easy to start from cuttings. A bit up the coast from you is Suzy Verrier, though from her website it is unclear if she will be selling roses this season. Hers is a back yard nursery quite literally.
