Which way should door open?

I realize this is a bath-related question, but I'm looking for a lot of opinions, quickly and we all know you come to the home decorating forum for that! :)

Take a look at the shower in this bathroom plan (shower will be frameless glass with a half wall on the side by the toilet). Which way would you have the shower door opening?

I think you have it going the 'right' way (if there is such a thing) as it is now - rather come out facing the sink than the toilet, if it possibly matters to anyone.

I would install it the way you have it. There's more swing room for one, and I know it's glass so it really doesn't matter, but the other way your first view is the toilet. It just doesn't feel right.
I know it looks fine in the drawing, but I would check to make sure the swing is not so great that it could touch the toilet.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about using the water pik in the center cabinet -- I'm not sure how long the hose is -- it would need to reach the sink and as I said, in our bathroom, there is more space between the cabinets so the center cabinet is farther from the sinks. I will make sure we put an outlet in each cabinet so that is an option. In my opinion, I kind of figured the center cabinet would stay closed most of the time and we would mainly use the ones above our respective sinks. But I will have to measure the cord on the water pik and see if it would work to use the center one as the main one. On the subject of two sinks, we only have one sink now and I never understood the desire for two sinks (it always seemed like people on househunters were completely irrational about it, LOL!). In my opinion, a second sink was just more work to clean. But here we are putting in 2 sinks because my dh has a lot of dental problems and his dentists keep adding steps to his nightly tooth care ritual to the point where it takes him like 20 minutes to brush, floss, use this other weird gum cleaning tool, water pik, rinse with special prescription rinses, etc. In the meantime, I am standing there exhausted waiting my turn at the sink so I can brush for a minute and go to bed (I was blessed with good teeth thankfully!). So I cannot WAIT to have two sinks even though I will end up cleaning them both.

Thanks for your reply! I am curious about what kind of trim will be required between the units if I go this route. I'm meeting with our kitchen designer tomorrow and will bring subzero spec sheets, hopefully we can get an idea. Interesting that you say you like the look of them opening the same way, I'm glad! I've never seen an example but will try again to hunt down some photos. Thank you for the other suggestions as well - not sure about switching the two but I do have a little bit of flexibility and might be able to separate them. I also had another idea that struck me as genius for a moment - just get the 30" fridge and put the freezer separately under counter. Either a set of 30" drawers or a 24" unit. Everything will be panelled so doesn't have to be the same brand. Slightly less capacity but probably still sufficient given that I have another upright freezer in the garage, which is easily accessible. This would give me so much flexibility in my layout and look so much better! Then I remembered that my husband and kids consider an exterior water and ice dispenser to be absolutely essential (I could care less but they'll pull the plug on the entire reno if I try to negotiate out their water and ice!). As far as I can see, these only come on freezer units, not fridge. So now I'm researching water and ice units that I could build into a cabinet....

I would say it depends on use and configuration. In the following pic, the double cabinets look good with doors opening to the outside, and the single cabinet on the end opens conveniently to the right. Sorry for such a blurry image. In the next pic, the door between the sink and range opens to the left, convenient if there are items for cooking stored in it--spices, oils, etc.--but not so convenient for dishes, if that's a clean-up sink. In the following pic, the cabinet on the far right opens to the left, which seems inconvenient to me, because all the work areas seem to be to the left. The contents of the cabinet should be more easily accessed from the left side, but it depends on what is stored there, which we don't know. Maybe that's a baking counter, and baking staples are kept in the cabinet. If your base cabinets also have doors, this is a perfect time to upgrade to all drawer bases. Spacer: in this case, a piece of wood that matches the cabinets that will go between the last cabinet and the fridge. Usually you use spacers between cabinets when the length of the wall doesn't exactly match the summation of the widths of the cabinets. In your case, you have to make sure you have enough space to the right in order for the door to swing fully, else you might not be able to pull out any drawers. Or you may bash the door against the counter top. For the counter top, you usually round off the corner depending on how much overhang you have. Counter depth means different things to different manufacturers. For the expensive built-ins, it means exactly counter depth in that the fridge matches the depth of the counters and blends in completely. For the stand-alone units, it usually means that just the carcass is counter depth which can be 24"-27". The doors stick out farther. And how that door swings (function of the hinges) determines how much room you'll need to the side.

I don't think it really matters, but we often enter the shower after using the commode. In addition, articles of clothing are set on the vanity counter before we shower. Opening the door in the other direction would direct us from and to those other spots.

I like the way it is. I too would not want to step out infront of the toilet. I think your towel rack placement would affect where you exit also. I think aiming the way you have it allow easy access to the linen closet just in case you forget to get a towel out. Also, if someone is in bath with you, say using the vanity for a moment (cause in your bath I personally would not sit on the pot while someone was in the shower but that is just me), you would not have to wait for them to move to exit the shower.

The way you have it. You will need to be able to grab your towel without reaching around the door, and the longer wall opposite the linen area is the logical place for them to be hanging. At that scale, you would have to open the door all the way to get out past the john, and you'd have to drip all over the mat to get at your towel.
