Vintage iron bed

I was at an estate sale today and they had a vintage iron bed for only $65. It was in rough condition, the paint is VERY chipped up, and the bed had the springs and a lumpy, thin mattress.

The lines were really nice, tho...and I'd love to put a day bed in my office, but I'm just not sure about this one. I loved the look, but the mattress concerns me.

How comfortable would it be sleeping on an old bed with springs? I'd obviously get a new mattress, but what kind? The one on there was only a few inches thick, not usable. Would a regular twin mattress fit? Would a twin bed be ok for a second guest bed? I've got a full in the guest room...I'm not sure this would be the best choice for a second guest bed. Right now I can fit a queen air mattress in the office if additional bedding is needed, but if I put a day bed in, then I lose that space.

I need advice ASAP so if I DO decide to get it, I can go there first thing in the morning.
