Comments (3)Top working is adding new varieties into an existing tree. There are three ways to add varieties to a tree. Grafting involves a new variety usually pencil thickness that is cut to join to the existing tree. Chip budding is cutting a single dormant bud off the desired variety and sliding it under the bark . Bark grafting is cutting a scaffold branch from an existing tree and sliding the new variety into the exposed bark. kokopelli, I am growing a Fantasia Nectarine that I chip budded onto a peach tree late summer. The chip budded Fantasia bud had flowers that bloomed with now a nectarine and a branch that is growing on the peach tree. What I did was slice off a dormant Nectarine bud and make the same size slice in the tree that I want the Nectarine on. Wrapped the new bud in parafilm tape. Very simple, but there are no analogies in regular life so grafting does take some practice. I have two Georgia Belle peach trees. I wanted to change these for something better. I cut scaffold branches off both trees and bark grafted two new varieties onto each tree. New branches are growing fast. Chip budding can be done when next seasons buds begin to form about late July. Send me an e-mail through garden web I have lots of varieties to exchange if you are interested....See MoreCould You Live on Nothing but Potatoes? This Guy Did
Comments (48)It wasn't a potato blight that incentivized my Scandinavian ancestors (6 great grandparents) to come to America, it was the opportunity to grow potatoes and other crops on their own land. Land ownership, I am told, was impossible in Norway. They came here and settled in Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana on their own homesteaded farms. (I do empathize with the native Sioux.) Even today, most of my relatives own farms and will tell you it's all about the land and a fundamental need to own a piece of it. Ironically, economic freedom was the faxctor that inspired my wife's parents to emigrate from Sweden to America in the 1950's. Mark...See MoreHelp on a 4bed 3 bath single level floorplan
Comments (5)Kirkhall you always notice the sight lines. And here I thought Id considered it all. The game room is for fuzball, air hockey, darts, whatever, and the walls are for noise control. But it shouldnt be right there. It should be tucked away somewhere over the garage, or in the basement. Neither one works for us. The plan would really work better without a game room, and the porch in that spot. Sorry I didnt mention it in my original post, but the scale is 1square to 1 foot. So the depth of the plan is 52 feet. If that is too deep to roof cost-effectively, what is the solution? Can it be solved with tweaks to the layout, or am I back to scratch? Lavender lass I love your practical comments here on GW. I love light and windows, so the cave look isnt the effect I want at all. In the past Ive had solar tubes in laundry room, hall, and master closet. Would they work in the master closet, laundry room, and family room? The thing I dont like about J&J baths is the two separate doors into a private space. The plan you link to has this problem for the master suite. Thats easy enough to fix, but as soon as you do, the laundry all needs to be lugged through the kitchen. Ive spent my free time on eplans and houseplans for years, and I cant find a stock plan I like....See MoreSingle guy planning a kitchen reno...HELP
Comments (18)Wow Strud, I'm impressed, especially for someone your age it looks like you are doing a wonderful job on your reno. I would like to offer this regarding the "beveled" edge of your flooring. We DIY'd our flooring installation a couple of years ago, I didn't know better to ask about the beveled flooring and that's what we installed (in oak) throughout all of the downstairs except the kitchen/dining area. In the kitchen and dining room we did Brazillian Walnut w/out the beveled edge so I do have something for comparison. I have to say that the beveled edge is harder to take care of because it catches dirt in the bevel and it's a pain to clean when there is a spill. I'd highly recommend you just rethinking that part, in the long run you may be happier without it. Lots of luck though and I hope you post pics when your reno is completed! -- Lukki...See Moreishop19
