Samples of Wood Picture Frames

I bought two clothes baskets full this morning at a garage sale for $1.00 each. You know what I'm talking about - the little corner "jobbies" that frame shops show you when you're picking out a frame.?

I had seen a table in a magazine several years ago. (Now, doesn't stuff like that get us ALL in trouble!? LOL) Anyway, the edge of the table was finished with various colors of painted trim/molding. Hard to explain and don't have my camera here, but I was wondering if those pieces of wood could be cut in, say, 2 inch by 3 inch blocks and attached to a table. Plan on painting/staining them and then wiping part of it off for a "time worn" look.

Am I just baying at the moon????

To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. - Thomas Eidson. YaYa, I think you'll figure it out! And when you do, post a picture of your table. If the mouldings were the same size or close to the same size you could stagger fit them up/down across the edge. Alice

Anybody else? I'm still in a quandry as to what to do with them! In the meantime, I got two good Rubbermaid clothes baskets for $1.00 each, so I'm still ahead of the game! LOL

Hi Porch and Deckers, I am planning to build a deck this spring. I really like the two-tone picture-frame look often shown seen on composite decks (example here: http://www.builtbymac.com/images/decks07/704-03-02.jpg). I don't think I can afford the composites, though, so I will probably use STK cedar. Question is - what is the best way to get the nice border effect with this wood? Is it just as simple as using two different stain colors, or should I consider a different type of border wood as well? Thanks, Pete

Cracking is due to differential shrinkage -- most species of woods shrink twice as much tangentially (around the rings) as they do radially (from the center out). Since circumference is proportional to radius (c = 2*pi*r), "something has to give." This is why cracks are usually looking like someone took a slice of pie (not pi) out. Thus, removing the center will reduce this tendency. Though if I understand what you want to do is a number of swiss-cheese windows in a three foot wide section, it may not eliminate it. And yes, do it as soon as possible, while the wood is still wet. Removing the waste could be done with a coping saw, scroll saw, jig saw, hole saw(in a drill) or router. To get the rabbet on the back, the best tool would be a router with a bearing-guided rabbet bit. Any other method would be quite tedious. Here is a link that might be useful: Sample rabbet bit

Additionally , you don’t have to do picture frame molding if you can get the tile flooring around the fireplace to be flush with the wood floor. You then frame out that section of floor with thinner pieces of your regular wood floor instead of picture frame molding . It will all look more cleaner .

Something that might look good would be to hook two half frames together to make a square and then nest several smaller squares inside. You could do several of these until the entire table top was covered. Then do your painting technique and cover with glass.

Or you could somehow put the existing strips on the table to form a zigzag pattern all the way across.

I like Adella's idea....it would be an interesting conversation piece if nothing else. Other than that....I'd probably do something on flower boxes for the garden..would make interesting framing .....hummmmmmmm whatever be sure to post a picture.
