Anyone have the Donna Hays Tea Story cake stand and dome cover?

Does anyone have the Donna Hays Tea Story Royal Doulton large cake stand with glass dome cover? Bed Bath & Beyond is one retailer that sells this item but has none on display. The cake stand is made of white bone china. I'm wondering if the dome cover is heavy or thin and whether it would keep baked goods fresh. My everyday dishes are Lenox white bone china so it would go nicely. The con is cost. This set is expensive. I'm also considering an inexpensive stainless steel stand with a high, sturdy acrylic cover from a restaurant supply store. It actually goes nicely with my stainless appliances and adds some sparkle. Any suggestions based on your real life experience using cake stands would be appreciated.

I edited to add that Ballard Design has a nice sized cake dome on sale (seen with their marble cake stands) that is less expensive than the one above. However, one reviewer complained that the glass was thin. If anyone happens to have this dome, I would be interested. I'm looking for a high, three layer cake dome, over 11" wide.

I have never used a cake stand but over on the cooking forum I am sure someone there will have info on the stand you are talking about.

I have the Ballard Design dome. It's very tall. I'm sure it would fit a three layer cake with no problem. It's pretty, but the glass is very thin. Of course, if it were thicker, the whole thing would be awfully heavy. I've never used it to keep pastry fresh, so I don't know how it would perform.

I also have the marble cake stands. The marble is not high quality, but they still make a pretty presentation. Can't find a picture of the dome, but here's one of the cake stands if you're interested in them.

Organic Farmer Bob typically when you rebuke someone for not knowing about something, you are best not to reviel that you your self know even less. I can imagine lots of home building systems less efficient than stick building, a well built stick house will provide more living space and use fewer resources than a well built standard A-frame, be easier to sheath and take less to heat in a cold climate (thats right, a tall stack like building has a large stack effect, and an A frame has a huge surface area, an a frame with dormers has an unnecessarily complex roof line which leads to leaks and air infiltration). Not all OSB off gases much, not all stick built houses use OSB, no form of alternative building excludes OSB, from an OSB standpoint it doesn't matter what you do the subfloor is still fair game, and probably the area where any offgassing will have the largest effect in any home. Also, where are the toxins coming from in the stick walls that they are not in the cobb walls? As for structural stability there are countless homes of all types that are good in a quake and countless homes of all types that fall like a house of cards. In most cases the strongest house for the money and effort that doesn't use some cheap but very limited resources is going to be either stick or very similar to stick. There are lots of very old stick houses all over Europe as well just FYI, its a safe bet (although I do not have an example that springs to mind) that stick or stick like (say timber frame with stick walls) hoses that are older than 450 still exist, sadly many have been taken down because of the valuable and reusable materials that go into them, a cob house is not reusable nor is a rammed earth house, they just sit and crumble. Also, since fruithack is probably into fruit trees I doubt he is going to rail against forests, and since I am on record all over gardenweb talking about how great trees and forests are I'm going to say it, occasionally clear cutting is the most environmentally friendly thing to do. When Spruce bark beetles started to hit hard here in Alaska the loggers asked to go in and harvest the infested and dying areas. The envirnomental movement stopped them because they were going to clear cut (because it would take too much gasolean and to many lives to try and selectively harvest with how stron spruce branches are) so the beetle infestation was left to go, and each year we loose thousands and thousands of acres of forest to them. had we acted quickly we would have healthy forests and a relatively small patch with all new growth, but no, clear cutting is wrong, so now we have huge swaths of dead forest with no trees growing, fewer logging jobs, and somewhere in the world another forest or plantation was cut to provide the wood that we let rot in the wild, and then a bunch of bunker oil was burned to move that wood to Alaska. Gasolean is also great stuff, with lots of uses.

Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. Not sure about BIG graph paper, but I still have two pads of the 8.5x11 stuff that saw me through the early stages of my remodel planning. And somewhere, I have a bigger graph page pad too, but not sure if the squares on it are larger. I would like to see some graphs that are 1/2 inch squares, now THAT would be helpful. In our old house that was killed in Hurricane Katrina, we had the 1950s era real blueprints all rolled up, and countless notes about how they built it. But these days, the blueprint industry is a lot different. Nothing "blue" about it. Moving pieces of paper around is a big improvement over trial and error moving of pieces of furniture. I like to draw a floor plan. Then I like to draw the ELEVATION of all four walls in each room. It helps me to see how well the room is balanced. No "heavy" corners, no light-weight spots, so i don't feel like my "marbles' will roll to one side of the room. I think achieving a balanced feel in a room gives me a sense of comfort. And, I know that making the most of a view, taking advantage of a natural view, or maybe screening a disturbing view out the windows, makes me feel happy and content. While I lived at MoccasinLanding, I had a neighbor who parked a real Greyhound bus (yes indeed) right next to our shared property line. (I saw that bus the other day and it was totally covered by mildew in a parking lot!) so I put in a privacy fence along that line, and then I planted a living screen. I also put in some wind chimes and hanging baskets, to keep my eye close-focused, and not allow it to range across the fence. In my back bedroom, I had a view of the small bayou, and I kept that long look down the bayou open, not blocked, because it was so pretty. In those days I was home only 63 days a year, 21 days x 3 times each year, because I was working in south Texas or south Louisiana. I took pictures of the views from each window and then while I was a safe distance away, I indulged all sorts of imaginative plans mentally, which kept me from making the worst mistakes when I came home. But when I was headed home, I knew my mission and hit the ground running when I arrived. Until you put your hand on a shovel or a paint brush or a saw, no harm done to let your imagination run wild! :)

Thank you all so much for all this help. It's been so much fun reading and learning and planning, and I was eagerly looking forward to trying again, despite the the very real possibility I'd end up at the bakery. But now it seems I will have to go that route anyway. The shower is this Saturday, and things have changed around here very quickly: last week, my mother-in-law, who lives in assisted living near us, was diagnosed with uterine and possibly also ovarian cancer. She will have a hysterectomy this Friday. We are very happy she is able to have the surgery so fast, and the doctor thinks she will have an easy recovery. But needless to say, this changes everyone's schedules quite dramatically. We had to uninvite most of our 23 guests for Passover next week (I'm way behind on the cooking for that already due to not knowing how much I would need to make and doctor appointments) to vastly simplify all that, and of course there is no time in the schedule anymore for something like baking and decorating a onesie cake. So I'm just going to order something cute from the supermarket bakery. But as my friends are all starting to have grandchildren, I hope to have an opportunity to try again sometime in the future, and when I do, I will have saved all your great ideas and advice. I had never heard of the Donna Hays Tea Story Royal Doulton large cake stand with glass dome cover so looked it up and was appalled at the price of the dome. BBB has the dome only listed for $59.99 and it doesn't look as if it's tall enough for a 3 layer cake! I have bought several the same for $5. at yard sales! Have now sold them all at a consignment shop for a nice profit.

Anchor Hocking and Libbey both make cake domes that are the same but priced lower.

I think that a cake under a dome looks very pretty but think about how you will use it. To serve you remove the dome and cut the cake and it's no longer as pretty. If there are leftovers it's better to refrigerate them.

I always refrigerate cakes as don't think they would stay fresh in a dome which is why I sold mine. Using the domes in vignettes a couple times a year was not worth storing them the rest of the time.

Thanks, valuable follow-up from all three posters. You have really helped to clarify my thinking. Perhaps the dome is not as helpful as I thought it might be.
I was hoping that cookies or other baked "goodies" might not dry out as fast if they were left out during the day and then put away at night. I was hoping that the expensive dome at BB&B might be tall enough and have enough heft to keep the air out during the day. The other domes mentioned in this post are heavy but not as tall as I would like.

The marble cake stands are beautiful but do not go with my particular setting as well.

Anyway, think I will try the other forum for additional feedback as suggested.

I have a glass cake stand with dome and it is very thick and heavy. However, it does do quite a sufficient job of keeping baked goods fresh. I usually use it for layer cakes. My husband doesn't like 'gooey' icing, and he always takes the glass dome off an hour or so before he gets his slice because the covered icing is moist and stays that way when covered.

So for utility heavier seems to work quite well. However in practical terms, the thing weighs a ton and I really don't like to haul it out for anything smaller than a full layer cake.

I don't have a glass dome but I just purchased this for buffet suppers and party hors d'oeuvres. I have been looking for something like this for AGES, and hope it is as wonderful IRL as it is in the picture. It's quite large, 27" x 22" x 11" deep.

Anyone have the Donna Hays Tea Story cake stand and dome cover?
