Why does the chicken cross the road??

Good darn question that I didnt have time to ponder yesterday.....

Took some time off to work in the yard and on some T2T projects and was enjoying my day in the sunshine with my new puppy (who up till this time was never more than 2 steps away from me) WHEN she spotted a stray chicken (gets missed when the clear out the chicken houses). WELL like greased lightening she takes out after the chicken, right down the middle of the road.

If you could have seen it....one terrified chicken running for its life, one white curly blur of a dog in hot pursuit and one overweight-middle aged woman trying to follow! After a half mile (yes I later clocked it) the chicken keeled over, the dog stopped because she didnt know what to do now and I caught her!

Lesson learned not to trust a terrier wherever little alive things might run and I am still recovering from the chase! BUT I did make some progress on my latest project, pictures to follow soon ( thats if no more chases ensue!)

What a hilarious story!

I spent the first 50 years of my life in Chicago and there weren't many chickens, lol. I have been to many farms as a kid to visit my Mom's family. I've even collected eggs in the chicken coop. But, I'm curious, why did the chicken keel over? From fear? From all that running? Exhaustion? Sorry if this old city gal sounds so dumb!

What a funny story to start my day off with, thanks for the Friday morning giggle (I needed that). Izzy is just cute as heck. Have fun "again" in your backyard and please do keep us posted if any other stray animals pop up. Oh gosh, wait till the little bunnies start coming out -

Here's something to think about. We have dry summers. There's nothing new about that. Even though the drought we are in is really unbelievable, our summers are often droughty. This mean you have to water some cool season grasses to keep them alive. This also means you have to water bermuda because it needs water to stay green (and alive too). During the summer you can expect very high quality turf from bermuda, unmatched by an cool season grass, anywhere on the planet. However to bring out that potential, it needs water, close mowing, monthly ferts etc. All of the maintenance would make sense unless the following are true: * We have dry summers * We have a cool season, in most years it is longer than the warm season. * We can grow alternatives. When the growing season is short (unlike the desert SW) and it is droughty, it is a struggle to bring out bermuda's high quality potential. Why bother with that struggle? Instead of the status quo, why not instead put away the lawn mower for summer instead. It easier to grow grass in the cool season when moisture from cold fronts is more regular. If the summers were wet, that would change things because then if you wanted to grow bermuda, it would be easier to acheive the 8-9 quality ratings. Whereas TTTF may avg a high 5 or 6 rating year round, at least in an area with dry summers and mild winters, the grass will have more growing time. The alternative would be either dormant or coming into or coming out of dormancy. As a result, the whole city has not had good color lawns this summer. Since the lawns will be dormant til almost june, we've just lost an entire year. There has been lost opportunities for a beautiful green lawn that will cover up the mud in the cool season. I just don't get it. I don't see why others think brown grass for virtually the entire year (most years) is acceptable. And not just that but they eagerly throw money at chem spraying companies to make the grass green when it just isn't going to be more than a 4.5-5.0. I'd love for someone to explain it to me. I will admit, seeding lawns is a pain and stressful and I'd rather not have to do that every year. Not everyone does (those in shady yards etc) but I am literally the only one in my neighborhood that has had grass this year with a quality rating more than 5. A 5 isn't something to brag about, it's bare minimum acceptable quality. When I drive around town, I want to see pretty green grass. Not dead grass and stems that just makes the place look unpretty.

Rickey, I think it was Billy J. because the cougar travels from our property onto his, through his woodland that separates us, and then gets his cats. The other Billy lives a half-mile north of me and his house is set back about 1/2 mile from the road---he is fairly new here and you likely wouldn't notice his place unless you noticed the green mailbox by the gate. He lives between the big new house west of J. road and the houses that face Old Burkhart. He stopped by the garden a few weeks ago and told me something was killing some of his chickens, and he'd seen a pit bull around and wanted me to watch out for the pit. I told him to watch out for the cougars, as I'd recently had the June cougar encounter. By the way, it is his property that they were seen crossing the other day, and that surprises me because he has several dogs. Unfortunately, none of his dogs are very large. I hope they're all OK. Keep an eye on your chihuahuas! The cougar I ran into along my garden fence the other day was walking along very slowly and stealthily, looking from side to side, and clearly hunting. It blended in really well with the dry grass so your little dogs might not notice it....and it absolutely did not make a sound walking through the tall grass. (We've since cut the grass back to stubble. I mean absolute stubble so a cougar cannot sneak up on us. First we mowed the grass as short as we could, and then I cut what was left with the weedeater.) I am about to go out to the garden to pick some more peppers to add to what I harvested this morning so I can finish the jalapeno bread and butter pickles. When I was out at this time yesterday, the rooster in the trap was having a crowing contest with my roosters. Of course, I didn't know it was a rooster in a trap, and was wondering why they suddenly had a rooster when they've never had chickens at all since we moved here. : ) So, if all is quiet when I go out in a few minutes, then maybe that is a good sign for us and a bad sign for the cougar. You probably did see a cougar's tail crossing into Fred's pasture. His neighbor that lives on the property kind of behind him has lost 12 or 13 chickens this year, and all but one disappeared without a trace. Fred has seen cougars in the past, although usually when he told me about them, he'd seen them at the old home place on the river west of Allen Rd. Thanks, Teresa, I don't think I've ever seen a chicken pie recipe without vegetables, that looks really interesting and efficient, because Bud and Makayla wouldn't have to pick out the pieces of veggies, LOL. Ruthanna, the chicken pudding looks good, I'm going to try a couple of these as meals when Elery's family comes. I'll have 11 visitors for 5 days over the 4th of July weekend, so I'm going to have to find things that I can bake ahead or multiply to get enough servings. The following week is Fair Week too, so Bud and Makayla are spending the night tomorrow night, the fair entries will just have to be baked and frozen, then thawed for the fair. (shrug) Just as well, they're getting too complacent about all those ribbons every year, make 'em work at it this time! Ryse, where are you that you need to move to Tennessee for a better climate? I live in North/West Michigan and I really like to process chickens in the fall, far fewer flies and I don't rush so much to get the birds on ice like I do when it's warmer here. sleevendog, the traffic cones actually worked pretty well, but they weren't quite deep enough. Hey, I'm creative! I didn't have enough room to partially freeze all those halves before packaging, that was part of the problem, I think. On another food related note, the second calf of the year was born today, hooray. I left Mama to tend it and didn't bother them by getting close enough to determine whether it was a heifer or bull, I'll know soon enough. Oh, and Elery and I had chicken on the grill last night. Chicken keeled over dead prob from heart..... they cant take alot of activity, fear or heat. Poor cluck, but I'm glad he went cause if he hadnt I'd still been running.....

Thanks for the laugh. That was great (after the initial hoping there were no cars coming!) Oh my gosh, I don't think I've ever seen a chicken do that and we've chased a lot of chickens. Was there something fried for supper last night?? :0

Oh that's just too funny! Well, other than the poor chicken, of course. I do have to add that I feel for you. I know I wouldn't think it was quite as funny if it were I doing the chasing. I'm afraid I'd have been the one to keel over and die.

Last night she took off after a frog. She was on the retractable leash, but I still had a run for my money, this time in heels! Normally such a well behaved dog, but if something little moves, watch out.....

Having her spayed today so guess she wont be running after any thing for a bit....

lol, I had a similar thing happen but I wasnt the chaser...my little mini Dauchsand who is all of 4inches high and 12 inches long.... when the door is open for to long I guess he feels the need to escape from us...well my boyfriend opened the door to put out some plants on the deck and out shoots max...he takes off like a wild man down the street...ken my bf..who is a large man both tall and wide takes off after max....he finally caught him when max ran out of gas...anyway I thought when you get your little one spayed I will loan ya max to help you with your new exercise program lol,,,,

A wheaten Scottie! No wonder she took off, they were originally bred to keep the "critters" out of the homes. They will hunt, chase and "go to ground" for just about anything, and hard headed!!!! My oldest one, put herself between myself and 2 Boxers (think size of Pitbulls) when she was only about 2 years old. My 2 are black and brindle in color.

Actually shes a mini schnauzer not that you would know it before she was groomed. She looks like another dog before and after, and it made no difference to me during the adoption process, I love her dearly!
