It's not really the point that they can't be removed, it's just to me you shouldn't take old goodies like that to make something to put outside because things outside don't usually last forever. Many of the vintage and antique items of today are just being thrown away and damaged. People do not appreciate anything old and want all new! So one day, everything old will be gone and we all know that much of the crap they make today won't last like the goodies from a hundred years ago! I won't even use the chipped and rusted granite pieces because much of mine looks like that. I don't care because that shows they were used and have a history. That is what makes them more interesting to me!

Potential indeed! :) I *love* the house and yard - I really need to post the "after" pictures, because we have spent every day since Sept. 11 (our closing date) cleaning, painting, etc. - it is really looking good. In fact, new furniture arrives today for the living room, so we'll finally have a place to sit besides lawn chairs! LOL And yes, Jan - that is a great little enclosed porch. Some of the screens are out because of prior owner's dog, but we will fix those. And, I found the most perfect glider/bench on Craigs List that I purchased for that space (photo link below), so now we can sit out there and watch the world go by. Last year I had caladiums, ivy, and a trailing sweet potato plant in one. Something else I use is my DH's old "brogans" (high top work boots) they usually have cracks in the sides when I get them and so are perfect for drainage. Just make sure you stuff the dirt all the way to the toes. You just have to watch the soil to keep it from getting too dry. Then I have an black antique baby shoe that I have a tiny plant in on my kitchen window. Hen and chicks really look good in it. I use an old kerosene heater for a fern stand. I have some spray paint that I think the color is called pottery or old pottery. It's a real dark terracotta color and I use the flat (no gloss). You can even glue the flat marbles (gems) on them to dress them up and give them some sparkle. If you want to sit the basket on anything that needs protecting just line the basket with plastic before you fill it. They look really great. They're really cheap. They come in every size. I love them! TIP: I use a soil mix for my containers that is roughly (very roughly!) 75% soiless potting soil, 25% good garden soil, time release fertilizer (pellets) and some of the water absorbing crystals.

OMG! I was having trouble posting asking if anyone remembered the Hypertufa forum, or wintersowing, or cement. I got so many good ideas on the GW forums. I have moved since the old GW days (still zone 7a), but I did a ton of FTF trades and USPS bare root trades. And, I feel the same about FB - I find it so intrusive. As for Houzz, I hired (and paid) and got ripped off by a contractor found through the site. I spent close to $1000 (last fall an emergency fix and then this spring, fixing it correctly. (The original job, a patio, cost several thousand dollars and he created a massive drainage problem). Then, I went to review him on the site to review contractors, but they are not easy to scroll thru and I do not have hours to look thru 1000s of their contractors.
