What and when should we tell Ex-Wifey?

My boyfriend and I are planning on getting engaged soon. It's right around the corner.

This afternoon we were talking about it while my SS was in the room. He knows about it... We've told the kids...they're excited about it. The oldest is 6....SD is 4. Anyway, we were talking about the wedding party...who he finally decided would be his best man, how I would arrange the giving away process etc. It was my hope that the kids would be involved in part of that process.....which he agreed with. As I talked about it I got a little teary eyed and SS asked me if I was going to cry. I told him yes...and then out of the blue he says to me, "but this isn't going to happen for a couple of years." His Dad and I looked at each other as if to say where did he get that from..... And then I asked him, I said, "who told you that?" And his swift reply was, "Mommy." We set it straight and told him it was going to be happening really soon. Which then left us thinking... If it's true that she said that to SS, then that's what she herself is thinking.....and maybe we'd better tell her so that she doesn't get a huge slap in the face in a couple of months when we show up with a ring on my finger. Ex-wifey and I are friends. I'm not worried about her going psycho, but I feel we should at least be courteous and let her know her time-frame idea is inaccurate. Is this a good idea? And how should I go about telling her...? Or do I/we really even owe that to her? This is a tough thing for me.... On one hand I want to smooth it over and not have her be angry about it, on the other, I feel, well, SCREW HER...SHE'LL JUST HAVE TO DEAL! However, if I/we don't set it straight then the kids may become confused when being told totally different things.

The divorce has been final since October 2002...she's alone...has had 4-5 relationships since 2000....relationships that fizzle out and don't go far enough etc. She dates...has an active social life.. We all get along....amazingly well...no serious issues. She won't be totally jumping for joy when we tell her....but she won't flip out either, or will she? UGH! Anyway, I welcome your ideas and opinions.

Thanks!
