So I had an exciting day today...

BF and I got engaged this afternoon!

We haven't set a date yet, but it will likely be sometime next winter (something small) and this is the style of my ring http://www.birks.com/index.asp?SKU=854583&SecID=64&CatID=712&LangID=1

(The blue stone on the side is a Birks signature thing - Birks is an old Canadian jewelery company)

I'll tell you a little story about what A__ said:

We have a little science kit for him (for when he gets ungrounded) that grows crystals that he keeps calling diamonds and he's really excited to do it.

We got engaged right before we picked him up from BM's. In the car BF said "We have a bit of a surprise for you" "Is it growing diamonds?" "No, but it has to do with diamonds. Do you know what it means when a guy gives a girl a diamond ring?" "Ummm... I think it means.... Happiness?" "Yup. What else does it mean?" "Ummm... Friendship? "Yup. Anything else?" "Uh, maybe that they might get married?" and it carried on from there. (He gave me a hug and seems really happy, but also seems a little confused about why I was calling friends and family)

Ok just to clarify, but I did mention it in my OP: Obviously my MIL does not like to look after the grandkids. Therefore we try to always organise something else so we don't have to bother her. So we actually don't 'expect' her to do us any favors and we don't 'take her for granted'. Fair enough, if you don't want to babysit grandkids than you have every right to not bother with it. However I do find it hard to understand because they are such nice kids and she has so much time on her hands. But again, we just try to find other solutions and we don't hold it against her. That was not the initial issue. The issue is that MIL is not all that interested in anything, therefore creates her own distance, and then goes to FDH to complain she does not feel welcome in our home. ItÂs true that I used to invite MIL and FIL over a lot more than I do now, they used to come around probably twice a week, and now that is maybe once or twice a fortnight. So it's not as if Liesbeth has cut them off in retaliation, I'm just simply less inclined to go out of my way for them. As she does not want to go out of her way for us, it's not that complicated. MIL canÂt be bothered with a lot of things; when grandkids have school concert and invite her she doesnÂt want to come, when we have an important event she will not ring and ask how it went, when itÂs someones birthday she will buy a present from local supermarket and tell that person that it was just easier that way, she invited us out for dinner a while ago and then proceeded to ask if we had enough money to pay for it?? But then when MIL decides itÂs time to see the grandkids she needs to make the point that itÂs sooo important for her to see them. And yes that annoys me at times because it seems insincere. But that doesnÂt mean I walk around all annoyed all the time, or IÂm such an angry person. And it's not THAT bad, but I did feel p*ssed off when MIL then goes to FDH to tell him she does not feel welcome at our house. Why not talk to me? As much as FineDreams might think I would loose it and MIL would probably have to ring cops to control me, I could have appreciated it a lot better if she had come to me and at least we could have cleared the air by talking about it. I could've explained I've been inviting them less because I got the vibe of her SHE's the one that can't be bothered much. Even though she says that she does want to see us more, she hasn't shown us. (And IÂm the one that invites them usually, FDH makes less of an effort in that respect because he says he knows what his mom is like). Once we talk and understand each other better we will probably be able to move forward and into a better relationship again, because I'm sure we all want to get along. I just like to see her make an effort to approach me, but we will see what happens..

Our district has zero tolerance for exceeding the limits - absolutely none. Apparently one of the kids had to switch to online charter school because he was going to automatically fail for missing too many days - because he had made the US Olympic team, and was in Beijing! I wonder if your school district is picking and choosing if/when to follow their policies. I know a lot of times here if there is chronic truancy that repeatedly ends up in court, the kids wind up in "the system". If the school district is not clear on the fact that SD's have another home in which they could be living, maybe they are comparing whether or not they think the girls living at BM's is better or worse than them living in foster care?

Hi there, and welcome! Hope you will get some good advice here. Like Justmetoo said, some more background info would be good. But with the info we've got so far I think you shouldn't split up with your fiancee because of his son. Clearly the boy is having a hard time with it, which makes it difficult for everyone, but if you 2 are happy together then I don't see that as a reason to end it. Unless of course your unhappiness with the situation is bigger then your happiness with your fiancee (FDH = Future Dear Husband). How does your FDH interact with him? Would it be possible for the two of them to sit down and have a talk? You could go over it with your FDH and discuss what message you'd like to get across to his son. -For example that you understand how hard this is for him, and that you respect it that he'll need time and space which you want to give him. Nobody is going to force him to play happy family and you are not trying to take over as a mum. -Has your FDH expressed understanding towards his son? I think it is very important that his son feels validated, rather then that his feelings are dismissed or disapproved (I'm not saying that that is happening of course!). Your FDH could tell him that he understands how his son wishes things were different, and that it must be very hard on him. He's been put in a situation that he's had no control over and that's difficult for anyone. However FDH is very happy with you and he wants to move on, ending the relationship because son is unhappy about it would not be the right solution. But maybe they can find a compromise: a way of dealing that everyone can live with. Something like: son will be given time and space when he needs it; so son can stay in his room after school and at night if he chooses to, but he will have to sit at the table for dinner with the rest of you. And normal politeness has to be non-negotiable. By making a compromise you are trying to give him some control over the situation back, I think he needs that. Just like the validation of his feelings. If he feels that his dad wants him to 'snap out of it' (again, not saying this is you guys!) then he'll just become more stubborn in holding onto it and more resentful. Your FDH could ask his son to have a think about other ways of finding a compromise (I'm only aware of him wanting to stay in his room), what is important to son? Get his opinion and get him involved in trying to create a better situation for all of you. Or would it be possible to have this kind of talk as a family talk? Have you tried talking to him yourself? Is this an option? You could all do a brain storm session to try and find new ways to all get along. And how about some small and simple ways of trying to make him feel needed/appreciated: the littlest things (like asking him to open a jar for you when you're cooking and FDH is not home yet) could help in slowly creating a bit better bond or some mutual acceptance. During dinner try and get him talking about his day; show an interest in his life and see if you can crack a joke. There's nothing like sharing a laugh to break the ice.

The boy has been living with his grandmother for half his life, and all his 'memory life'. That is his home, his mother, his life, his stability, his comfort. Dad bought a house 8 months ago and there's not enough room for his son. But there's enough room for you? The fact is, and you need to look at it in the eye--he doesn't want to take care of his son. It says a lot about him. I'll let you think about what it means. So then there's you, and you pressure your boyfriend to do what he ought--step up to the parenting plate. Your boyfriend has made it very clear he doesn't want to, so he pushes the burden back onto you and pressures you to step up to the parenting plate. The truth is neither of you want to do the job (and I don't blame you if you don't want the job, it's a big responsibility and a lot of trouble--particularly when your partner isn't going to do his part). However, both of you are quick to criticize grandma and how she raises him. How many children have you raised? How many ADD children have you raised? A supreme court justice once said, "I used to have 9 theories about how to raise children; and no children. Now I have 9 children and no theories." You've invested very little into this relationship. Only a year, you are independent, you have your own house, you aren't hungering for a wedding and a family. Already you are pressuring him, he's pressuring you, things seem to be falling apart, you have the inkling that the engagement was 'premature'. Stop and think. And be honest. Nobody but grandma has stepped up to raise this child, not his mother, father or you. And you should not; because if things do fall apart and this child gets to depend on you and you leave, you will have done a terrible thing. His grandmother is doing fine, no matter what you think. She's his home, his center, his world, all he knows best. Don't meddle because you think things 'should' be different. If you really think things should be different, you need to find a different situation that fits your definition of should. That's the only way you will be happy. You cannot force a square peg into a round hole. If your boyfriend does not feel paternal, he does not feel paternal. Deal with the reality. It is what it is. You cannot pressure him into feeling what he doesn't feel. Any more than he can pressure you into feeling something you don't feel. And why is he pressuring you so marry so quickly, to move in, elope, whatever. Is it to get you off his back about his parenting? Or is there more. I say do nothing until you think this through more. He's not 24, he's 30. And he's immature. And he's not good parent material. And he's coming with baggage. A little boy with problems that are only going to get larger as he understands his situation better (where's mom? why don't I live with dad? is grandma going to die?). No you are not being selfish, you are being wise.

I'm definitely pretty excited! FDH -that feels weird to type- is excited too, but he likes to (unsuccessfully) pretend he's not :)
I've spent most of the past two days on the phone (curse that most of my family and friends live in other places!) but I have a bad cold, so I've almost lost my voice a bunch of times. Then I go bonkers while I sit quietly for an hour to rest my voice because I have a million things I want to talk about.

Yup, Ima, that's it! Good detective work.
It's bigger than the ones I liked right off the bat, but the band is fairly narrow and square shouldered (like me - LOL) so is actually properly proportioned to my hands and their shape.
I had it for a few days, and now it's in for sizing. It's going to need some pretty major reconstruction (3 sizes too big) so it's gone for quite awhile :( I saw my sister and my grandpa and a few friends while I had it though! I think I'll wear my great-grandma's opal ring in the meantime so my hand isn't so lonely.

JNM - about the wedding planning - we've chosen February and I have some venue phone calls to make on Wednesday. We're just doing close family and a few close friends. So if everyone comes, brings a date, and their kids, it would be 41 adults and 8 kids. If only the people currently in relationships bring dates, it will be 33 adults. So that's pretty tiny.
We'll be doing ceremony, supper, toasts and mini-dance with our tiny group, probably at a hotel (hopefully the one with the beautiful stone atrium full of tropical plants). Then we'll have an open house the next day for the more extended family and friends to join us. It will be a come-and-go tea style thing (like is often done for 25th or 50 anniversaries) at our home.
A__ will most likely be sort of a junior groomsman / senior ringbearer. He's too old to be a ring bearer, and too young to be a groomsman, so we think he will come in with and stand beside the groomsmen, and hand us the rings.
So the vision is coming together... Even if nothing is booked and concrete yet.

My bridesmaids (my sister and a dear friend) live in other towns, so I might drive a couple hours this weekend to do some dress shopping with the friend. My sister is 8 and a half months pregnant right now, so she won't be too involved in the legwork part of planning for awhile :)
Since we're doing small and simple for the guest list and venue, I think my dress will be also small and simple. More than one layer of soft fabric usually works better on me than one layer of heavier fabric, but we'll see what I like when I start shopping.

(Oh, and I will wear my mom's pearls and use open blooms in my beautiful old teacups as centerpieces - but I knew that part before I knew the groom)

I like them! I think the first one with the lace would be a lovely compliment to the old teacups - a soft, romantic look.

I think your plan for A_ is good. Are your N and N's going to have a part in the ceremony?

A hint about pregnant or recently delivered bridesmaid dresses - empire waist's are great! My SIL and matron of honor had her first child a few months before my wedding, and though she made it back to almost pre-pregnancy weight before the big day we did empire waists just in case - they were beautiful. I'm not too fond of this one, but it gives you an idea of what I mean!
