Chewing Fingernails, Don't Know if You Can Help...

18 years ago

The post about "deadbeat moms", competence/irresponsibility etc reminded me that I had thought about posting this.

don't know if anyone has any insight, maybe I'm just hashing it all out just to hash it out.

A number of years ago Sandy, my closest relative emotionally if not genetically, married a man who had a 9-year-old daughter, Lucy.

Lucy's mother had been out of the picture for a number of years, don't know the story there, but Sandy raised Lucy.

Sandy's husband decided the grass was greener somewhere else, so he moved out & took 14-yer-old Lucy with him.

Lucy ran away & returned to Sandy, & her father agreed to let her stay with Sandy.

Nobody knows where this gem of a father is today.

Lucy is now, I think, about 25, married, & has 4 children, 7, 5, 2, & 8 months.

Lucy won't work, won't go to school, won't play with the children;

she lies on the couch all day watching movies on tv (I've seen this).

She won't make conversation, won't smile, won't do anything.

I've seen this, too, & it's unnerving, just an expressionless, deadpan face, like a mask.

Lucy is supposed to be on medication for bi-polar disorder, but she isn't taking it.

Lucy's husband is going to school full-time & working in the evenings.

They're living with her mother (not Sandy); don't know when or how her mother re-appeared, but now she's got this family of 6 living with her.

(Karma?)

Now Lucy has met a guy who, I think, is playing her for a fool;

he "loves" her, "adores" her, he's smitten, etc etc etc til you gag.

Lucy has started fighting with her mother & telling her husband that she "just doesn't love" him any more, that she's going to take a job managing an apartment complex.

Her idea is that husband can keep kids some of the time, & new love....who doesn't have a job & who is living with *his* mother right now, didja see that one coming?...can stay in the apartment & take care of them the rest of the time.

All my alarm bells are ringing, all the red flags are whipping in the wind.

& I can't get Sandy to stand on this girl's neck til she goes to the doctor to be checked for depression/postnatal depression/etc.

Sandy is so angry & so fed up (of course, Sandy is exhausted; she works all week & gets all 6 of them on the week-ends when Lucy's mother can't take it any more!), that she says Lucy is just lazy, she's just selfish, she needs her hiney kicked.

& I know Lucy needs to go to the hospital.

I know she's not thinking clearly, she needs to be on her meds, she's had too many children too fast & may have post-natal depression in addition to bi-polar disorder.

but, even if I could convince Sandy of all this, Sandy would have to convince Lucy, which I just don't see happening; Lucy is "in love" & in denial, & Sandy can't force her, as she has no legal relationship to Lucy.

The only people who do are Lucy's mother, who wants Lucy & her husband & their little ones out of the house ASAP, & if that means Lucy leaves the kids in an apartment with an adult male who has no known morals, so be it, & Lucy's husband.

The husband can't care for the children on his own without Lucy:

he's going to school, working part-time, living with Lucy's mother, & can't afford a place of his own plus daycare.

At present, they're doing fine;

they have good food, clean clothes, & a safe, clean environment, they spend week-ends with Sandy & her husband, & they're charming, well-adjusted children.

Sandy can't take on those kids;

she has a hard job, lots of hours & lots of responsibility, & although she isn't as old as I am...she nearly is.

anybody got any insight? knowledge? tips?

Anything at all would be appreciated.
