Show me your hex-tile floors and tell me your grout color please!
Comments (8)Hi Bill, I have seen mention of this Mapei on other threads and did a google search and came up with a lot of foreign-language links. Who makes it? Or better yet, can you give me a link to a website? (Also, I sent you an email - did you get it? I noticed another tile installation disaster today. Our Master Bath floor has been covered for protection until today when part of it was exposed while the double vanity was installed. The large 16" square honed Calcutta Gold tiles are not centered on any of the walls, so there are really off grout lines at the center of the vanity. It is really obvious and when I think about it I literally want to cry :( . This is our forever house and everywhere I turn, a tile job is done badly. I could really use a good referal!)...See MoreCalling all cabinet painting pros! Have to buy paint tonight
Comments (7)i might be able to help with my experience. I am not a painter. I am currently painting my cabs with the waterborne Benjamin Moore right now. My Benjamin moore store told me that oil based paint is not necessary anymore today with the quality of latex paints available today. I can tell you that the cabinets in the rest of my house were painted with benjamin moore impervo over 12 years ago, and they are still beautiful. I can also tell you that the finish is smoother and prettier than the new cabinets in my kitchen that I have used the waterborne paint on. And, I am or I believe that i am doing a really good job so far. I primed, sanded, painted first coat, sanded, painted on second coat. don't get me wrong, they look good, but the ones done 12 years ago just have a smoother finish. do not think that it will be easy to put latex over oil later. its not easy or simple at all. you will need to stip the oil paint off first. Or, i have heard that you can sand to roughen the oil paint up a bit and then apply an oil based primer and then you can paint with latex over that. but, I have never done this before. as far as my 12 year old oil painted cabs yellowing, they problably did a bit, but to me they just look like a creamy white. If they have, i don't mind it....See MoreCalling all owners of white (painted) cabinets!!! Help needed!!!
Comments (27)For what it's worth, while we don't have white cabinets, we have white everything else in our house---all painted with BM oil-based paint. I spent this weekend battling with it to try to get some spots patched---got new paint, same color, in water-based. Big mistake---different finish, different color! Happily I managed to dig up one last can of oil-based in the basement. I'd go with oil-based or lacquer for kitchen cabinets. So I can say: - Oil-based *does* yellow. Unfortunately for us, we love the yellowed color since it turns the shade into a creamy white---the original mix is too white! Oh, well. - The oil-based finish is (I think) easier to clean and wipe down. I couldn't get the water-based to a finish I was happy with. - White does show dirt, which is probably really only an issue if you have kids and/or pets. Our dog is the biggest offender because he likes to rest his head on window sills, and those get gross. Less of an issue in the kitchen, though. I wipe it down in the problem spots periodically, and occasionally put some touchup paint on. - If the paint chips, you can sometimes see the patch if you look closely. I don't think it's that big a deal, though. - The adjustment thing depends in part on your house and your climate. We do have problems with some of our doors and casework, but it's mostly as a result of an old house settling and things swelling in rainy season, not of the paint per se. (My parents have similar issues in New England with their stained inset cabinets from a relatively costly custom cabinet company.) We're still getting flush inset in the kitchen though---we just know what to watch for. A good cabinetmaker should be able to do flush inset with clearances that will accommodate that with minimal adjusting. We did go with frameless for our most frequently used cabinets for that reason, though. Hope that helps somewhat!...See MorePlease show me your cream colored cabinets.
Comments (23)I still love the cream/white cabintets....thanks for sharing. I was beginning to doubt myself after going to home tours and seeing all very dark cabinets. peridot....my cabinets will be custom made from a local builder...but the paint is pearl. I hope we both love that color...so good luck in yours also. christine...I was also glad to see the ORB pulls. I was trying to decide to use that or stainless. I did purchase ORB light fixtures and plan to use a brown(ish) counter top. I hope my kitchen turns out as well as the ones posted...and I appreciate the ones who did....See Morerhome410
