Agates. beach rock & glass bathroom vanity

Hi, I have been feeling like crap since Sat. finally better today (the crude or whatever). Anyway started on my vanity today. 2 side panels and 2 front panles. I raised the glass w/an MDF panel to make it closer to level w/ the rocks and agates. It will be so much prettier when it is grouted and clear coated. The rocks and agates show all their beautiful colors when coated and shiny.

Oh, what a clever idea to raise the panel. I can imagine how the clear coat makes the tess shine. Looking good, girlie.

Queen of the bathroom!!! ha ha ha ha...gee thanks. This bathroom is our one and only...not easy to remodel with a family of 4 let me tell ya. The wall tile is Hakatai Ashland 1"x1" in Burnt Amber. The floors are 4"x4" red limestone with the glass inserts. The granite was the biggest pain. They wouldn't split the slab so we had to buy the whole thing. Only needed less than 1/3 of the slab. So what do you do with a big piece of rock? You beg your other half to build a piece of furniture! His first one. I think he did a great job :o) A note about the paperface tile: It came in 1'x1' sheets, but because of the weight I sliced them into 6"x6" manageable pieces. The first few sheets I had the thinset squishing through too, but knew I'd never finish having to scrape the groutlines out. So started to backbutter the tile instead...sped things up immensely. We have a similar vanity with tower, but a lot smaller. A couple of things we considered are: Bump out: We didn't do this but now I wish we had. Depth of tower: I didn't like the pictures where the towers were 12" deep or deeper, so I made mine 9" deep. To me, the really deep ones look like a kitchen cabinet is sitting on my vanity. In your picture I would make the 4th drawer from the bottom start above the vanity and be full depth, and then set-back the rest of the tower making it your desired depth. This will give you sort of a hutch-style and the tower won't seem so overwhelming in the space. Height of tower and how to divide up the space? Our tower ends at 8' from the floor, including the trim. This is the same as where the shower glass ends, and the linen cabinet ends. The trim touches the fur-down. From the bottom up the tower has the 2 cm marble piece, an approx 6" dummy drawer/panel (bc of electrical), then a double door cabinet with adjustable shelves (approx 32.5 tall), then a smaller double door cabinet with glass fronts and lights in there (approx 17" tall), then a few inches of trim to reach the 96" mark from the floor. Width of tower in relation to the drawers below it. Ours is the same width of the drawers below it, but there are some pictures on Houzz showing some vanities where the tower is wider or skinnier than the drawers below. Ceiling: How tall are your ceilings? Mine are 10' and I was not liking the pictures of towers that don't tie to the ceiling. There were a few pictures where the cabinet maker used trim to tie it to the ceiling (sometimes filling 2 feet of space with trim and panels) and some where the ceiling was furred down. You will also see some pictures where the tower just stops and is just hanging there looking sort of out of place IMO. We furred down the ceiling above vanity 2' and made it only only 2" deeper than the tower depth and put lights in the fur-down. Lights: For reasons I won't go into, we couldn't put sconces in the mirrors, but I wish we had been able to do that. Electrical: We put 1 outlet on either side of the tower facing out and turned sideways, and 1 inside the tower to charge electric toothbrushes. The bottom drawer of the tower (above counter top) is just a dummy drawer/panel because of the outlets. Towel rings: We put the towel rings on either side of the tower. If you have 2 walls on the ends of the vanity you can put them there. We had an open end, so for symmetry we put them on the tower. Trim of tower when it comes to the mirrors: If you are filling the space over each sink with edge to edge mirrors, have the trim put on the tower after the mirror is in place. In your picture: - water could touch the side of your tower and cause damage over time. If you are willing to have the drawers below only come up as far as your vanity top, then you could install a small piece of stone like in the picture below. But I think that would require you to have a seam which you said you don't want. - love that you have lots of drawers planned. Can you change the sizes of the drawers slightly so that all the drawer pulls will line up rather than staggered? It will look cleaner. On the tower cabinet doors, I prefer knobs instead of pulls. - If you are using the very small drawers for jewelry, I think you can have a small lock installed if you want and it might be nice to line the drawers with a soft felt like in jewelry boxes. Pictures: There are lots of pictures on Houzz if you search vanity with tower. You will be able to see what you like and figure out how you want the tower to tie (or not) to the ceiling.

I just did the EXACT same project in my guest bath. Painted the vanity white, the walls seafoam green, ripped out an ugly cabinet & purchased the frame for the mirror (haven't put it up yet). This is the only pic I have handy to share, it was time consuming, but easy... i should've done it years ago. My advice is buy the BEST brushes/roller/tape your hardware store sells. Good luck!

I asked about guidance of height in consideration of husband s height and out lower ceilings. Forgot to mention I've read 50 articles on placement and I have the general area down, as well as looked at 800 lights myself. That wasn't helping, it's why I asked a direct question on height and size as gave my own direct measurements. A little guidance or a probing question is more helpful than ”your tile is awful” or ”just read the chart” because not everything falls into the chart. In a kind sense, I'll just say you seem to be a woman of strong opinions and great confidence in them. Perhaps I should have note of those traits, but I'm certain they should always be mixed with consideration and kindness. Something like ”perhaps your topic is over broad, consider are-asking just a, b, and c and include just this and we may be able to communicate better.” I've read and used a million HOUZZ articles as we approach being 3 or 4 weeks out from competing a house we designed and built almost entirely ourselves, self contracting the entire thing. I've now nailed down a stone person who just does counter tops and dropped a couple who seem to be just kitchen designers. I'm trying to decide between a couple styles of lights that I am learning terms for each day, and deciding size from a chart when your island is both super long (12 ft) but narrow 40 inches) is tricky, and I want to be sure that the style I choose will provide enough light to work with as we cook a lot. That involves narrowly down by practicality of styles, and not having used them and getting very little info on sites and even worse search engines, it is overwhelming. In the bathroom I'm not sure if, considering the sink is to one side of the countertop near the tower, the lights going over the too of a mirror would be better to go completely across the vanity portion or just centered over the sink with shelves to the side. If the latter, unsure if there is a way I can use sconce lights or no. Majorly, as wires are being pulled SOON, I needed to know the placement for him to do so, three large or two medium on island, and how to place lights and mirror over sink. I can pick them out fine once I figure that out. You were under no obligation to have helped, but a tone that was at best brusque and dismissive, and possible ruse, to myself as well as the other gentleman, must serve you well in your field I guess, I just don't see how. Perhaps it's all me as a first-timer. If so, my apologies. It took a lot for me to even try to ask the questions, and my apprehensions seem justified at the moment. I do appreciate your trying. Hey, Grankids and I went to the beach today and we scored big time!!! The tide was out and the beach was clear of ice. Beautiful rocks for the vanity!! It was a beautiful day while we were there and we found some great rocks. I have a enough supply to finish the entire project. One panel is done. Need more glass though, and I ordered it today. So will continue with the rocks and do the glass when it gets here. I may grout this finsihed one tonight, may do each one as their done, just so the grouting process won't seem so extreme....

Hey all, My glass order finally got here and all 4 panels are done!!!...I only have a small amount of rock along the bottom and then I can grout (probably Wed)and be done w/this part of the project....then the backsplash...and still am not quite sure in my mind how that is going to be...it will come to me and when it does I will be ready!!! LOL!!! will post final Wed night after grouting..Granny Cathy

Hi, I got one panel grouted yesterdy and ran out of grout. So hopefully will finish today. Clear coating the agates and rocks before grouting, made clean up sooo much easier, why I didn't think of doing this before now is beyond me. But I'm thinking I don't like the light wood of the vanity now, I'm thinking I may restain a darker color....any opinions? I really think the light is too stark and I actually prefer darker woods. Not real sure now why I choose the lighter for the bathroom anyway...huummm I'm sure I had a reason....

I finished today. Had a hard time getting a good pic (tight quarters) sorry. But here it is just needs sealed. Still not sure about the wood color. I've decided to wait a week and see what I think then. But now I really have to get my mind on the backsplash.....I'm thinking tree....??? Just a thought still, but it's brewing....
It rained today and is suppoosed to snow tonight. Spring is so slow getting here in Alaska...Later

That is soooooooooooo pretty, CATHY. The sealer really gives it a richness. IMO, you're right about the starkness of the wood against your other woods. Your door facing is so beautiful, and since you LIKE dark woods, I'm thinking you'd really like to stain the vanity. Betcha you'll stain it.

Well guess I'll start sanding today. Lord I am a glutten for punishment!!! Cause I have decided to restain a darker color. Just don't like the lighter wood...The darker will look much better I hope. So probably be about a week long job. I was really hoping the lighter would grow on me and I'd be ok with it. But it hasn't...so here I go!!! I'm sure I will be much ahppier with it when it's done..

It's gorgeous , I just love how it all turned out. I agree that you'll like it more with the wood a bit darker color.The mosaics are beautiful.

Hey, Here's the update on my vanity that has become a pain in my BUTT!!! Ok the last clear coat will go on tonight!! YEAH!!!!!! Tomorrow morning I will be able to finally put my bathroom back together!!! It seems like forever...I will no longer be found on the bathroom floor. You will now find me outside enjoying life!!! If I had known I would have waited til next winter when I have to be inside. Oh well it will be done and I will be happier for it....But my next projects will be ones I can work on OUTSIDE!!!! I will post pics just as soon as I put it all back together and clean it up...

Yee Haw!!!!!!!!!!!! It's finished. And I re did the medicene cabinet to boot!!! I no longer will be living on the bathroom floor!!! Outside I go!!
It was a long project but I am so happy I did it. The darker wood makes the rocks and agates look so much better...Sometimes things work out!! This was one of those times..

Thnaks all ..We are all real pleased the way it turned out. I got up this morning and walked into the bathroom and love it!! Before it just wasn't right, now it issss. The backsplash will have to wait til winter. I'm happy for now....
