CL patio glider before and after

The CL transformations many of you have posted have really inspired me, so I'm hoping my little effort here will help others try to work on any ugly ducklings they have. I bought the CL glider for $30 after our wooden one of many years started rotting. It just seemed too worn looking, but the price was right. Pictures are during, after and then the before pic just as I started taping off the chevron design.

I used frog tape at first to tape off what I didn't want to paint black, but found it really started releasing. Then I used duct tape to finish off the last row while I was muttering, "this will be the project that was sooo NOT worth it!" I quickly rubbed all the edges back down and sprayed it all over.

I don't know how long the paint will hold up on the fabric type seats since I couldn't find where others had done exactly this type thing. So even though it's not on the post a pic thread, here's my pics...finally I finished something!

Also, I didn't address this, but I got this from Ashdown in 2009, so I it is an own root plant. At least that is my understanding. But I don't think there would be anyway for me to separate the roots of the diseased from the rest, because the most recent new growth is almost in the center, while the other section is on the far left. That would seem to me to indicate that too much of it is infected to even consider separating it. I'm not sure I have much confidence in it surviving anyway (especially with me doing a chopping job on it). I think I might be better off to bite the bullet, and proceed with another plan. I can't imagine the frustration of hacking down a row of productive blackcurrents 3 times. That had to be extremely painful. One thing this has done is motivate me to work on other areas of the lawn that I planned to take over anyway. My husband has been a bit resistant, but I have shown him enough nice examples of what can be done that he is now on board. I have about 13 boxwood, a cedar, and many other things that I need to plant now anyway. I've learned a great deal, and that is one of the things I love about gardening anyway-endless number of things to learn, and some aspects are just trial and error ultimately. You can't succeed if you don't try, and there are bound to be failures no matter what you do.

Let's see, in my entire house, the DR set, MBR set, sofas and one coffee table, all the area rugs were bought new, as were WTs. *Everything* else (Hitchcock table and chairs in breakfast nook, end tables in FR, rush bench in mudroom) were bought in used furniture stores, CL (LR end tables and coffee table plus the table the TV is sitting on now, old carved oak chair, MBR wing chair and ottoman, DS's bunk beds, desk, chair and bookcase, FR bookcase, and 2 spare chairs for DR), GW (artwork in DR and FR, MBR lamps, white wood porch rocker, wicker settee, wing chair in LR, Rubbermaid storage cabinet in basement and lots of dishes, glasses, small appliances, etc.) or at auction (DD's BR set, DS's dresser, side table and blanket chest in MBR, and secretary now in LR). I'm not counting ebay (crystal and all the master bath faucets, sinks, and towel bars), Big Lot type stores (area rugs, MBR valances, LR and Ds's romans, throw pillows, FR lamps, towels, sheets) or clearance sales at JCP, HD and Lowes (bathroom tile, bathroom mirrors, PR faucet, bathroom light fixtures, LR and DR drapes and rods, MBR and DR romans). Haven't found much at garage sales except the Pfaltzgraff set (with serving pieces) I bought 20 years ago (and have added to with help from other garage sales and GW). A lot of the kids' clothes have come from thrift/consignment stores.

I've been on both sides of the fence with CL, buying and selling. We have furnished our house almost totally with items from CL (and Ebay.) As I buy new things I turn around and sell the old ones. What I've learned from selling: People love to bargain so always price some wiggle room into the ad. Sometimes you'll get the full price but sometimes you'll have someone one offer you less and that will be fine because you priced accordingly. But also know what you will take. And after a while you get a feel for the flakes. Example - I bought a chair a few years ago for $10. Darling little thing that I used in my office until I upgraded to another CL find. I knew I could sell the chair for $10 but I wanted to see if I could get more. I priced it at $75 and a lady asked me if I would take $50 for it because she wanted to get it for her granddaughter. I said sure, we set up a time and she never showed up. A few days later she wrote and said she forgot to come by and she still wanted the chair but she'd bought so much for other grandkids could I take $30 and I said no. She'd lost her chance. I just sold the chair for $60 Sometimes you can't tell what's going to be popular. I had a rolling clothes rack that I could have sold 30 times based on the responses in the first hour. Antiques, to get your price, you need to be willing to wait. On the buying side I've learned that when things are for sale in certain areas that I will usually get a good deal on something in great condition. CL shrinks the pictures now to a smaller size so often I have to ask for better/bigger pictures before I decide I'm going to drive all over the place. Some people are nice about that but some get all pushed out of shape. For me the good outweighs the bad,

CL Rug - Under my DR table?

Parma - LOL Threed - It's not far from my work. The person says they have more than one of each. Not sure what's up with that. Here's a quick shot of what an 8 x 10 size would look like. Part of the rug would stick out into the doorway visually. Is this ok? It would take up most of the floor on the DR side. Wide wise it would be from the tape measure to the wall.

Now that it is done, was it worth the effort? I think it looks great and hope you post back in a few months and let us know how it is holding up.

Aww, thanks, you guys!

lazydaisy--I played with the design on my computer using a picture of the glider before trying to do it on the real thing, so that really made the layout easier.

marti8a--I figured the tape would let the paint bleed through after the tape began lifting--and I'd have to paint the whole thing black to hide the mess, so I guess since that didn't happen, it was worth it. I'm pretty tickled that the design came through, and that the tape actually stayed down. It really didn't take as long as I'd thought it would. I'll let you know how it makes it through the summer, since you can see it's right out in the sun.

Wow. Great transformation. I did a harlequin pattern on a wall years ago so know how challenging it is to get the taping done well. Great job.

Wow, thanks to all of you! It really wasn't that hard, so I'm sure anyone could do it. Though, cheryl, I can't even begin to imagine doing a whole wall of diamonds!

I have an existing little table and 2 chairs & footstools that I'm planning to just paint the frames black to tie in with a bistro set I already have in the backyard, but that should be pretty easy. I used one of those cheap little spray handles you can attach to paint cans for the first time--well worth it--saves finger paralysis.

Like I said before--the projects on here that the rest of you have done just amaze me!

cyn427--I considered painting the background cream, but actually didn't paint it at all. I didn't want the background too stark since we really don't have any other white out there, so just left it with the sort of beige viney floral design it had, then taped off what I wanted to remain unpainted. That way it also was easier for me since I just sprayed exterior black on the whole thing (used a few coats of rustoleum ultra 2x coverage) then just peeled off the tape. Surprisingly, it doesn't even feel any stiffer than the fabric already felt. I'll try to post a close up. From a distance, it just looks like the background color is light linen. If it looks purple instead of black that may just be my poor phone camera picture. Purple would have been cute, but I'm not that creative!

clblakey--The seat is actually a typical outdoor fabric that you see on many patio sets. I think it's nylon, and it doesn't seem plastic. We have it on a couple chairs we've had for several years, and the fabric seems to hold up quite well so far. BTW, I loved your permanent marker coloring the wire on your crystals in the post a pic thread!

my3dogs--you know how much I've loved seeing your projects! Your comments mean a lot, and I'll try to post if I ever finish something else.

teacats--I'll try to give an update at the end of the summer on how it held up. I'm wondering that myself!

trailrunner--If you were close to me, I'd love to help you paint chevrons on your glider!
