My switch plates are more along the lines of pixie lou. What ever is the decor of the room. Our kitchen has brass plates to go along with the brass/gold tone of the fixtures. Down stairs bathroom switches will be ocean themed(once I find some I like). Upstairs baths will be Victorian looking. Our bedrooms are mostly the plain white plastic. I have seen clear plastic ones where you can place a piece of fabric or wallpaper behind it so as to match what is on the wall. It is all up to your personal preference. As long as they are the same in the individual room, i don't really think it makes a difference. NancyLouise

White...... as your trim, or if LUTRON/rocker type, wall color matches. No please, to other finishes, they are not a design feature, to second Patricia above. Personally I would stick with trim white, as paint colors tend to change. Remember......a white toggle or receptacle glaring from within a painted/ plate? Not so great : )

To the left of the sink the backsplash should just be a continuation of the backsplash under the window sill. Darn it looks like you wrapped it into the window. I would remove the tile wrapped into the window on the right. Use a pencil liner or schluter for a clean finished edge. You can the lower the switch to a normal height on what will now be sheetrock painted wall. The backsplash on the left is just too much and looks heavy and stuck on. It does not all have to be symmetrical. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

Yes, most ceiling fans either have pull chains or a remote control available to allow you to switch the fan and light features separately from one power feed. The bigger issue is making sure you have adequate support for the fan. If the box was designed for a light only, it probably isn't sufficiently strong to support a fan. Of course, some houses are roughed in for fans to start with even if they only put a light in. If it's not a fan box, you can retrofit a fan box. They make ones that you put in the support bar through a normal box sized hole. No additional damage to the wallboard/plaster requried.
