I saw the Kohler Dickenson apron-front sink installed at my local Lowes. Besides the hefty price, I thought it was a bit shallow. I think it was around 7-8 inches in depth. You can find great deals on apron front sinks at surplusdecor.com. They carry a manufacturer called Vigo Industries. Also, you can find decent prices on farm house sinks on overstock.com. Depending on the size that you need, 33 x 20 x 10 or similar, you might want to check these two web sites. I paid about $550 for my apron front sink at overstock.com. I was very pleased with the packing and the quality. It is made in China; I'm not sure who the manufacturer is because it wasn't mentioned. I suspect it might be a Kindred one from the sizing.

You can do a search on the forum for Vigo and you'll see some of the posts on it.

We have a Dickenson installed but I have not used it yet since we are a few weeks from a c. o. Sorry I don't know the depth but it seems fine to me. Remember, if you are doing an undermount you will be adding the height of your countertop to where you will have to reach to the bottom of the sink. Lower back strain (I'm old and getting older) is always a consideration to me and a very deep sink would be problem in my opinion so maybe I'm not the best person to comment on the sink depth. I wanted the cast iron, although many people on this forum seem to prefer the Shaw's farmhouse sink that is fireclay, because I'm familiar with its durability and I've always had good experiences with Kohler. HTH.

I hate to say this.. i just bought one from ebay and paid $450. Ebayer was selling it for at least $650 . I offered him $400 then $450/cash and picked it up since i was local. I just lucked out which is good because my cabinets are going to cost us $$$

From a different perspective (I design and build custom cabinets)

We have done several kitchens with apron front sinks. All but one has been fireclay (Shaw). They are very irregular and can be difficult to get level with the top of the cabinets. Cheaper fireclay sinks can be tempting, but will crack if you try and use a disposal.

The last farmhouse sink we did was the Kohler cast iron. I liked the look and consistency, but wanted to mention two things.

1. The contractor purchased from Amazon and it took 3 attempts to get a sink that wasn't damaged in shipping. (UPS). They are NOT packaged nearly as well as the Shaw sinks.

2. The sink can only overhang (stick out) 1/2" from the face of the cabinet. If you using overlay doors, your sink will be at least 1/4" shallow of your fronts. On the Shaw sinks with inset doors, we usually overhang 1- 1 1/2"

Just found my sink specs and the basin depth is 8" as you estimated. Also, rwwood is correct about the overhang. Our sink front is about 1/2" in front of the cabinet box but our doors are 3/4". I knew this would be the case since I had seen the sink installed in a showroom. The reason this didn't bother me is that I did my first dishwashing as a five year old at a freestanding apron front sink. My mother taught me then to do what she did---to always have a dish towel draped along the front of the sink to lean against and to catch drips. I sometimes still use this method with my undermount sinks because I tend to be messy.

I went to the store again today to look at the sink. I still love it. I actually like that it sticks out less (overhangs less) than most apron sinks -- it's flatter across the front. I wanted to check out the depth, and it felt fine to me. What the salesperson said to me about depth is that taller people are more comfortable with shallower depths because then they don't have to bend down to get to the bottom of the sink. Since I'm an almost 6 foot tall woman, that may be why it felt comfortable to me.

Does that sound right -- that taller people would be more comfortable with shallower depths, and shorter people would be more comfortable with deeper depths?
