Can I undermount a cast iron sink?

I found a sink I really love...Kohler IronTones Smart Divide. It's perfect...both hubby and I agree. But the KD says that we should not consider undermounting a cast iron sink. He says the sink weight will eventually cause it to separate from the counter top. But I really wanted to undermount it to keep the clean line......

So, help, is undermounting a heavy cast iron possible? Is it going to cause me problems down the road?

This is an old thread so not sure these folks are around anymore--you may have better luck posting a new question--but we have a Cape Dory that we put in about 12 years ago using the Kohler mounting kit. We did not reinforce it otherwise, though our cabinets have very solid plywood boxes. Our plumber installed the sink but we did the mounting kit piece since he hadn't used it before. There are also some options for third party straps that will work too--someone with more familiarity with those may be able to recommend one for the Irontones sink. We just used the Kohler kit because it's what we knew about and Kohler stood behind it in case anything went sideways, but it's been trouble-free. We wanted to be able to remove and replace the sink from below if needed without removing the counters, though happily have never needed to do this. We don't have quartz counters (ours are soapstone) but not sure that would make much difference since the counters sit on top of it.

I sure hope not because I've done it in my new kitchen with the Kohler Dickenson apron front sink. Although, come to think of it that sink rests on the special cabinet built for it. But the condo we are renting while waiting for the house to be done has a Kohler cast iron double sink undermounted. I think the building is about 5 years old and everything seems fine with that sink. I just checked and I don't even see any separation of the caulk around the positive reveal. HTH.

I'm puzzled by why your KD would say that. My sink base has support built into it to hold my heavy fireclay sink. I'd be worried that he doesn't know how to do that.

I had earthquake straps done in a t below the sink, just barely screwed and glued into the counter top (done by the granite folks). The straps are metal and hold the sink easily. The clips just don't cut it.

Interesting. I've not used the support brackets in the manner you are employing them. Those that I use are sufficient to support the weight of the sink, on their own, and are installed front to back, thereby eliminating any risk of interfering with the sink fixtures. (There is a large nut on the basket strainer, which needs to be tightened, and that for a disposal, is even larger in diameter). If your hope is to eliminate the need for caulking at the intersection granite slab and the sink rail. You'll be hard pressed to find and installer who will warranty the installation, without a waiver. So, hold the sink as even or below the level of the plywood.

I had a Kohler self-rimming double bowl in my old kitchen. Couldn't wait to get rid of the self-rimming and the double bowl. I did have problems with scratching and staining (after 25 years!). I now have undermount fireclay single bowl, I just thought it was too beautiful. I love, love, love the single bowl! Which ever you choose, get the sink grids to protect your beautiful sink (and dishes)!

They're pretty commonly undermounted. I hope your KD isn't in charge of the installation. If you have a granite/counter person or a GC already, I'd have them double check the sink cabinet before it's ordered because your KD is clueless in this department!

Anyone else have issues with irontones undermount? Other than the mounting kit did you reinforce any other way? Who installed? Do you have quartz countertops?
