Anyone ever been to Warner-Crivellaro in PA?

Be about 45-1 hr for me but it looks huge and fun. Anyone ever been there? (If you see a post from me that says I can't buy anything else until I use some of what I have, just ignore it!)

Heh Heh, never been, but I drove 1 hr to get to Delphi here in Michigan.........and spent $160!! All that pretty glass puts a spell on you and MAKES you take it home!!!

I would have bought less if it was closer and could just pop over there when I eeded something. On top of that, the route there is under construction, so I knew it would be a while

I always wanted to check it out!!! I used to do the warner/criv glass forum until I found this awesome forum!!! Don't know if they still have their annual glass contest, it's real cool!!! I'd be there like Jack the Bear if I lived that close!!! Diy's message applies to me too!!!
Way to justify Shorty!!! I'd love to go to delphi too!!!

Medha, I do still have the plants (I'd left a message for erin007, but I think messages on this website don't go through?). But I don't want to ship them, and I don't want to drive to drop them off. And they probably aren't really worth the gas for a special drive for you. When I posted this, I was thinking that maybe someone would take it for whom it's a couple stops by subway. But if you are ever in center city area (or university city) anyway, not just for this, let me know, you can have the plants. Your profile doesn't list your e-mail though, and for some reason I don't see a link "send me an e-mail" there either (but I think these links don't work anyway?). So if you do want them, let me know what your e-mail is. But yeah, either way, don't make a special trip -- if you want to drive somewhere to pick up a begonia, Meadowbrook farm near Philly has a good selection (http://www.meadowbrookfarm.org/index.html) -- they have many varieties, all just $7, I bought mine there, and this way you would pick exactly what you want, not just my leftover plant :)

I love the red rings too! They are aposematic coloring, along with the shiny black setae. The Arctiidae are well studied (some of them) for their sequestration of secondary chemicals (allelochemicals) from plants. They sequester pyrolizidine alkaloids, many of which come from the senecio family. They sequester other chemicals as well, such as iridoid glycosides from plantain. The same chemicals as buckeye cats. Some of the Arctiidae are extremely toxic or distasteful. That is why so many of the moths are colorful, such as the virgin tiger moth, the great tiger moth, and even the leopard moth, which in addition to the white and black spots has a lovely blue and red abdomen. Arctiidae also are some of the most polyphagous cats around, with some eating over 100 different species of plants. They also use pyrolizidine alkaloids for courtship and have developed complicated coremata or hairpencils for this. Interestingly enough, milkweed butterflies also use pyralizodine alkaloids as well for both defense and courship. They get them from flowers as adults, which is why monarchs love joy-pye weed and other eupatoriums. I could go on about that but I have written enough of a tome. I love the relationships Leps have with plants. Right now my giant leopards are loving dandelions, which seems to be a favorite of Arctiidae, and easy to supply. I remember Larry saying he fed his Taraxacum officinale, and I had to look it up! Typical Larry, lol! I remember raising an Isabella Tiger moth when I was six years old (to be fair, it was ready to pupate and all I did was provide a container to pupate in). I was disappointed that such a dull moth came from such a pretty caterpillar! Thus it was 30 plus years before I tried that again :)! Dan, I just put in a request to my local library for an inter-library loan. I think this book came from Virginia Tech. These scientific tomes are too expensive to buy. The next one I want is about checkerspots and is like $100. I like butterflies but that is too much to spend on a book! I will try putting the caterpillars in the fridge. Yikes, my fridge is quickly filling up with butterflies, cats, and pipevine (I still have some very small caterpillars). Cheers, Elisabeth

Bob Walsh covers Mimi's egg-rooting method in his book on "How to grow plumeria-frangipani anytime anywhere", btw. Still miss the "Aloha Plumeria" forum though...and Mimi, too. I hope she's happy in her life, and stress-free. I'm currently rooting a bonus plumeria with an egg, and an Oahu Star cutting w/o one, -since I only had one egg available when potting them up. The bonus cutting is showing tip changes on it, already, but I can't consider this a fair test, as the Oahu Star cutting was considerably thicker than the mystery (gift) cutting was, when I rec'd them. To do a fair comparative test, I think I'd have to use 2 cuttings from the same source and root them the same way, (except for placing an egg under only one of them).

The Perkiomenville Auction is still going -- every Monday year round. There are still dealers and the auction part. There are far fewer dealers than there used to be -- I would recommend if you are going to have a far drive to go on a holiday weekend like memorial day or labor day as that is the only time the auction is really hopping anymore. (Though the first few nice Mondays of spring are also bound to be crowded.) The deaers also don't seem to start as early as they used to -- used to be most dealers were there and set up by dawn. Now if I get there at 7 or 8 it is still empty -- people are rolling in to set up when I am leaving at 9. Again, though, the holiday weekends are an exception -- best to be early those days. I did figure out the auction tables thing - yes, you can pick through things left behind. Technically, though, I think you are supposed to offer money to the woman collecting money for the auctioneer for what you take -- I have seen her yell at people. But there are always a ton of people taking stuff and not being very subtle about it (they bring boxes and tote bags and load up) and no one seems to pay. I'm pretty sure that what gets left behind gets tossed unless the consignor comes back to get it (and most of it is like mildewy clothes and moldy books, etc. that you know no one is coming back for) so I guess it is better that people take it than it goes in a landfill somewhere. I have also bid on things at the auction - it is exactly like I described above - a crowd of people standing around an unorganized pile of stuff, while the auctioneer holds something up. Bidding usually starts at a dollar. The winning bidder hands over cash and puts his new item in a pile -- by the end of the auction, there are piles of people's wins all over the place. I have seen some really nice furniture go for very cheap (most of the other bidders are dealers looking to buy low for a profit, so it is not hard to outbid them if it is something you want for yourself.) But I have also seen them auction TOTAL junk -- furniture that is moldy or falling apart, broken glass patio tables, etc. In fact one day they auctioned a plastic covered cat litterbox that still had litter and cat poop in it. No, I am not kidding and no it did not sell LOL! I think they literally load the truck up at a house cleanout and bring it directly to the auction as is -- thus the litterbox full of poop etc. At one point, I was waiting around to bid on one oak schoolhouse chair that matched my kitchen chairs. The lot before it was 4 kind of ugly folding chairs from the 40s. When those didn't get bids, the auctioneer added my oak chair to the lot. I was the only bidder and got all 5 chairs for a dollar. I had no use for the 4 folding chairs and when a guy next to me saw that I was planning to leave them behind, he asked if he could have them and I gave them to him. I ended up with another chair for my kitchen table for the sum total of $1 and he ended up with 4 free folding chairs. So anyhow, that might be more than you wanted to know but there you go.

Ok, I'm convinced. I live close; I'm going as soon as the weather is marginally better. I really "can't" (hehe) find exactly the right glass for my next mirror in my stash anyway!

I go there all the time. Years ago it was great. I guess the parents retired and the kids that run it have different interest. Its still the biggest act in town thats close for me. I go twice a year and stock up. They don't have anything new on display, but if its your first time it will be fun for you. As far as them being helpful its hit and miss. Go during the week if you can, week-ends used to be crouded. Once or twice a year on there website they have penny shipping.

In case you haven't already looked at their web site: www.warner-criv.com. When I googled, I saw a site for factory tours in the area. Maybe you can also find "other" attractions in the area to justify to DH!

Well I am no where even close but will try to go to the website and look.Set to Google to get the link while typing this. Gotta love dial up. As diy says goes for me too. Yesterday I bought out a stained glass artist of all her scrap glass. YIKES!! Almost 70 POUNDS of it. After sorting it into 8 of those small dollar store cat litter pans, that are useless for cats but wonderful for glass, I still need some pink LOL Might get in on that penny shipping.

Too funny, shades, same thing here. I inherited tons of scraps and the first project I'm starting on, think I need a better blue! One of the problems is, you get a tiny piece of something you fall in love with, need more of it and nothing else satisfies you after that point. Hum...does that sound kind of like meeting a significant other or...dessert in my case?
After reading a few posts, I'm even more thankful for you gals. Also, sounds like backorders are a problem so, since I'm close, I won't have to go through that frustration. Fortunately, don't really "need" anything, but...(the battle cry of the mosaicers).
