Been kinda busy: lazy susan and 1st orb!

I went to Big Lots for the lazy susan and paid $10. Really needed it on our kitchen table. Might make another for the trunk show.

FINALLY got around to doing a bowling ball. My fingers got really cut up from this project. I did tumble the pieces but then cut more after the fact so it's good that it won't be handled a lot! OUCH! Wasn't real happy with the design as I made it up (what other way is there?) but it looks much better grouted (w/black, of course). I ended up buying some white glass (some plain and some irridescent) as well as a sheet of yellow. WHITE really makes things pop and I wanted a LOT of color in this puppy.

Still have a small tray and a turtle to grout but can't seem to work up any enthusiasm. It must be spring fever!

Those are beautiful!! Love the lazy susan, and the orb is fantastic!! The colors in the orb are amazing!! Are you putting the ball in the show?? I bet it will sell FAST!

Spring fever here, too but it's been raining, so I've been trying to get some projects done. I have a small pile of things that need grout. Got to get on my birdhouses, they (the birds) are starting to hunt for their summer "cottages"

Rosie,they are both great...how do you cut such perfect squares and what are those little odd shapes in picture 3 of BB? Do you order a lot of your glass?I never see some of these in the 2 shops i have close by.Guess I gotta go get a bowling bowl to add to my stash!!Annie

We are now veiled in Martie's clouds after a downright cerulean morning. "Weather" is definitely movin' in for tonight/tomorrow. I haven't listened to a forecast closely, but I the worst I expect is MAYBE some heavy snow early on quickly changeing to sleet and then to rain. The makins of a pretty gross day, in all liklihood! But I'll be inside painting so I don't really care that much. Good excuse to play with, cuddle (theraputically beat) a little dog, 'bug. (Do they dock the tails of Bouviers, 'bug?). The stageing held! I put the first coat of ceiling blue on the little part of ceiling over the 1st. floor door to the stairwell. I put the first coat of wall color on the remaining half of the north wall, the entire stairwell, and the remaining part of the east wall. As well as a third coat on the outlet, switch, cable, telephone covers. I've cleaned all the rollers, pans, and brushes. And I'm rewarding myself with a "wicked treat"... Hot Pastrami, with onions, ans swiss cheese. MMM-mmm! Helpmeet is a bit downcast, not having accomplished all he'd hoped; he's showered and headed down to the local eatery for a cold beer, some vittles, and some sports on HDTV. :) Martie, you story reminds me of a guy we used to see on the beach some years ago. He had a Saluki; beautiful dog! The acceleration "off the line" was simply amazing and it reminded me of a Cheetah... you know, how the spine really flexes with each leap. Anyway, that dog went nuts over a frisbee. Guy would throw it, dog would look at him, and run it down once released. Other dogs didn't stand a chance, UNLESS it landed in the water. Truly something to behold doing what he'd been bred to do. Your floral assortment is beautiful and thoughtful. I have a grocery store bouquet that arrived with my box of chocolates... all in pinks, reds. whites. I found some very nice chocolate (dark with a candied, edible flower on it, and milk chocolate cupid from an antique mould) and a humorous card for the helpmeet. Every single Valentine's Day he brings me something. Valentine's Day was Mum's favorite holiday (right up there with Easter; her baskets were a joy to behold). I wonder if Jerri will share some sentimental anecdote about her parents? I found those particularly fun and meaningful (in case you hadn't guessed). Just as I was leaving the garage to clean up the equipment I saw a guy with a dog waving to me. I waved right back and called out to him. His dog is a Labradoodle and he lives a few doors south of our home. He said he sees me all the time with Rex, and would love to stop by when I didn't have my hands full. We have several "new" neighbors and it will be fun to meet one more of them. It's important to know who to call when you need a cup of dog chow or when a dog goes AWOL (absent with out leash). ;) Drema, it's so nice to hear from you. I know you've had a lot on your plate, too. I like the way you've decided to "roll with it". Sometimes the simplest plants offer the most interesting colors... I'm a sucker for foliage, anyway, so anytime it offers up multiple colors I'm impressed. How sweet of you to "take Charlie" and give them a night out... . (another Mum anecdote: she used to take 5-6 yr. olds for an afternoon so a young mother could have some time to herself. She said it was easy to just sit and read stories and chatter for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday.). More I want to say, but I've forgotten it by now. !

remodelfa- I could do that (standard depth) pantry, but it would make the clearance to my island only about 37 inches or so...kinda tight. But doable..my main holdup is I really didn't want a deep pantry- wanted that very convienent 12 inch deep one..hmmm.... buehl- Can't recess into that wall, family room (not large) behind it. I am so torn. This is NOT my dream house. I figure we'll be here anywhere from 5-15 years (sorry can't narrow that down more!) :) So I have 2 choices: ECONOMY VERSION: keep OTR micro and recirculating vent (right now my Jennair electric cooktop has downdraft that I never use). Would be an efficient use of space- plus its the GE Advantium which I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be using a LOT- so I need it in convenient spot for me. To keep costs down I can also resist the urge to go induction cooktop w/a wall oven, and just get an electric slide in. LUXURY VERSION: if I move the micro elsewhere (say to under the island), then I'll need to purchase a hood, pay to vent outside (not sure how much that will be- if its possible to hook up to the vent that already goes outside from the downdraft part), buy induction, buy a wall oven etc... I'm already going to do hardwoods (~3500$ for kitchen and family room), granite (~3500 depending on which granite), I've already upgraded to stainless DW and fridge (spent ~$2400)...and good chances the cabinet guy plus install will end up being around 14...we're also extending the hardwood into the bathroom, so need to replace the toilet and vanity while we're doing that (~1K).. Eeeek! PS here are some pics to give an idea of what I have now: PS There's a bullentin board on the pennisula (held down by toaster oven) to try to mimic where my island will go...bulletin board is 36 in across...also I put a 48 diameter round glass top (from my patio) on top of my kitchen table to visualize the 'rounded end' of my imaginary island...

Susan, I'm so sorry you lost your two big guys. In the last few years, we've lost 4 old dogs, and a couple of old cats. The loss of beloved pets sure does leave a hole in your heart. Because we live in the country, though, and horrible people drive out and dump pets "in the country" all the time, as if the poor things can take care of themselves, we always have abandoned animals showing up needing a home, so we never run out of cats or dogs. Still, just because a couple of little dogs showed up needing a home and needing to be loved and we took them in....that doesn't make me miss our dearly departed old dogs any less, and it is the same with cats. Our oldest cats that we have now are around 15-16 years old and I know they won't be with us all that much longer, but we have had a few cats live to be 18-20. It sounds like you've been busy planting. My snap peas stalled for a long time during that time frame when the weather was too hot, windy and dry and everyone was having wildfires. It was not pea-friendly weather, but they are doing great now even though the plants still are shorter than they'd be in a year without such a prolonged warm, windy spell too early in the season. Maybe the recent rain and cool weather will make your peas step up their growth and produce a harvest for you. I love the toad story. Do you have any cats or dogs that could have carried it inside? We had a cat who used to bring in bunnies, birds and voles (sometimes dead ones, but mostly live ones) through the dog door, which is the reason we got rid of the dog door. I like for the wildlife to be outside, not inside. The frogs have been croaking like mad the last few days. With all of last year's and this year's moisture, we have the most frogs this year that we've ever had. They are just everywhere. Stockergal, What fun it is to have a little helper, even if he is eating you out of house and home! I did plant tomato and pepper plants yesterday in a raised bed and the soil was still very wet, but not so wet that I couldn't transplant plants into it. All that is left now is to fill in a couple of places in the cucumber bed, which also is a raised bed, and then to deal with the grade-level soil at the low end of the garden. I hope to do that today, but much will depend on how wet the soil is at the low end of the garden. Because of all that rain, it wouldn't surprise me if the soil at that low end is still unworkable. If that's the case, I'll move to the back garden, which has had big puddles standing in it. I know the back garden is going to be a mud pit, but I'd like to get a lot done before next week's rainfall. I noticed yesterday that the back garden's puddles are gone. Luckily, most of it is sandy-silty soil and it dries quickly, so either today or tomorrow the part of the back garden that has been rototilled ought to be plantable. I am hoping that the part that isn't rototilled yet can be rototilled on Saturday late in the day after it has hopefully dried up enough, or maybe early Sunday. With rain in the forecast for Sunday, it seems like I'll be weeding and mulching on much of Saturday while Tim is mowing and bringing me grass clippings. We mowed several acres last weekend, but you cannot tell it now by looking at them or at the yard. Everything has grown so much, it is like we never mowed. I am looking at a few bare spots in the perennial beds and trying to decide what to put in as replacement plants. We now do know, apparently, which plants can survive 78" of rainfall in one year in amended clay, as well as which ones cannot. Dawn

I just checked out your photos..WOW! I'm wondering what kind of adhesive do you use on most of your projects and also what kind of adhesive you used for the back splash?

Thanks all! CRACKPOT: I think you must be referring to those silver looking pieces? They are from Mosaics by Maria (on line). I have NEVER ordered sheets of glass online. Shipping is too expensive and I want to see it in person before buying. Most of my glass has come from HobbyLobby and since we discovered Chameleon Glass, in Little Rock. I've bought a lot of cut mirror glass from Mosaics by Maria. I've been using my strip cutter for 3/4" strips and then use it again to measure a square. Then I use the cutter to make the triangle. I rarely just "nip". BAMA: I really DON'T like mortar for adhesive although I have used it. Now it is rare for me NOT to use GEII. I honestly don't remember what I used on the backsplash. It's been over a year. It could have been mortar and weldbond...
SHRTY: I guess I'll take the orb to the show and see if it sells. Going to HobLob tomorrow for a holder (they're 50% off). If it doesn't sell, I get to keep it! HEHE

Ok, Rosie, here's a real rookie question. Are you still useing the glastar? Can you explain like I am a 5 yr old how you do those pretty triangles? I can do the strips and maybe squares. I'm sure it's obvious, but at the moment it's eluding me.

Rosie, Rosie, Rosie! Too nice! I so like the lazy susan and you know that being a BB person, I love the ball!

I was going to ask about those mirrored tiles too. A couple of weeks ago, I contacted Maria's through e-mail and discovered they don't ship to Canada. Ouch! It hurt real bad! Been depressed ever since...

SHRTY: Yes, I still use the Glastar. Directions: Cut your strip, turn it crossways on the jig and measure & cut the square just the same as you did the strip. Now take your manual cutter and cut the square on the diagonal to make the triangle. Photo attached to help make it clearer.
TIF: Bummer about Maria not shipping to Canada. Push comes to shove you could rent a PO Box in Maine!

Are you cutting with the ( hand)glass cutter or nippers?

I've been doing that with the nippers and I don't have very nice triangles. Maybe I just need more practice :-)

Love them both, that ball is so nice and bright, and love the geode in the lazy susan. I have got to get at it and make more, but perhaps like you spring fever has set in. Its raining today though. What's next?

Oh Rosie!!! I miss you and the gut splitting giggles!!! Can you imagine if we all lived closer together!!! We'd have to open up a mosaic retreat!!! Is that a geode from Mexico! Wasn't that hand kissing guy funny?!! I want to keep my desert rose out on my memory wall!!! Great finished projects ya got there! Do you have any ideas of what "Riana" stuff you wanna make? Cindy sent me pics of Mexico and we have a wonderful pic of the 4 of us!!! I'll get Cindy to post it!! I was showing my DH the pics and after he googled to see how much a flight to where the heck Texarcana is! LOL! I also had a better look at the awesome stuff you put on your shoe, guitar...sooooo much cool stuff in your album! Real Eye Candy!!!

Rosie - I just love both of these pieces. Your lazy susan is elegant and beautiful, and I just love the design. And your Orb...wow - it's gorgeous. I love how you put colors together.

And I have to say, I've always liked the BB's that I've made from broken dishes...but these made from stained glass are in a whole other class. They are more glittery, and there's something about the uniformity of the shapes that really appeals to me. You did a beautiful job on it. Yours and the red/purple one that nicethyme did....they both just blow me away.

And once again, I'm telling myself...NOOOOO...you can't start on the stained glass until you use up more dishes! But then I keep buying more, too!
