Hanging Garden Planter

Metal Hardware Cloth w/mortar and mixed media mosaic. It's getting harder for me to cut the diamond lath, so used the hardware cloth for this one. Going to order from Spectrum Home Furnishings some red crystal pendants and do some hangy down things on the cup handles. The yellow shards are cut from vintage dinnerware made in Portugal. I found them at a flea mkt - whole set of soup bowls, cups and salad plates. Wonderful find for $10.

Oops, the post about Behnke's was on Mid-Atlantic Gardening; I mistakenly thought it was here on houseplants. Too many forums! I thought I had found some pots but at the last minute I realized they had pre-drilled drain holes. I'm planning to get the Valley View ones this coming week. I go to the Beltsville one since it is closer. It is about 60 miles from Westminster. Their prices are not cheap, but the plants are impeccable, and at 25% off, I'll pay for that. My bird of paradise was $49.99 less 50%, my Phaiocalanthe orchid in bloom was $39.99 less 25%, my small red ponytail palm was I think around $5, the very nice blooming tropical hibiscus in 8" pots were $14.99 less 25%. They had a lot of 10" to 14" tropicals - dracaenas, rubber plants, canes, selloums, birds of paradise, crotons, pretty much every houseplant there is! A small section of orchids and african violets. Lots of Phaius Tankervillae (Nun's Orchid). Anthuriums, ZZ's, a nice selection of cacti and succulents, and just about every 4 to 6" foliage plant you've ever seen and some you haven't. And I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting. It's the largest selection and square footage of houseplants I've ever shopped in - picture the greenhouse at Valley View Farms where they keep the houseplants and everything else, it's at least that big with just houseplants and maybe twice as big! I suspect the houseplants area shrinks some in the spring and summer, so go now.

Thanks! I was afraid Saran Wrap would not be sufficient and am so glad you told me before I started planning on using just the plastic wrap to cover the containers. I'm sure I can get 6-mil clear painter's dropcloth plastic somewhere. I also hadn't really considered leaving enough space in the hanging planters for when (not if - I'm trying the power of Positive Thinking) the seeds start to sprout. Some people might think planning WS now is too early. But as someone who will be new to WS, I need people like you to answer my questsions BEFORE I kill everything I try to WS. Thanks again for the information and pictures - I appreciate it.

DIY Vertical, hanging garden - Tips on transplanting + hanging?

Inspired by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9vN2eudWcQ&feature=share&list=PLJhSDv5VSRVbNkrvHfuJncnBzrcy1I-4T&index=4 I am making an apparatus out of 2-3 recycled plastic orange juice bottles, connecting them to each other vertically, with plants hanging out a flap in the front of each container. HANGING Does this sound OK? A bent wire hanger, inserted through two small holes in the top container, bending the hanger in half, so the hook part hangs over the various nails already drilled in the walls from previous tenants. I would only do 2 or 3 bottles together in a single column, for weight purposes, and because I don't need *that much* lettuce :) LOCATION Should I try them on the North or West facing walls? There's nails all over the place. When my Morning Glories get tall enough, I'm training them up the walls. There are lots of spiders on the West facing wall, but both sides get LOTS of heat where they intersect. TRANSPLANTING I have lots of leaf lettuce seedlings that I started inside, mostly 2" high. Some have been that height for a week. Are they ready to transplant? How many should I do per container? They germinated very quickly, but the roots are so shallow, they were hard to thin out and transplant the first time. Should I start some from seed within the containers, or will they germinate faster inside? These are from a mixed bag of "French salad leaf lettuce" varieties. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I normally like to experiment, but I have already bought so much potting soil this year, I really want to get these right! ha.

Eileen, if you have a tub thing like you shampoo a dog in or something similar size, set them both down in it with water for a few hours and let them absorb it. In fact, you can do that on the weekends when you are home and cleaning, put them in some water or even in your tub with water in it, and after you are cleaning put them back on their hangers, and they will appreciate a cool respite with water. I don't know if you have a fertilizing schedule but I do mine on Sundays half-strength Peters fertilizer and when I do that, I put them in that tub of water to soak up what they may. I have more big pots than hanging pots and I have to water all of them once or twice per day depending on the temperature and rainy conditions. Remember that you can fertilize hanging pots more often because they lose so much fertilizer in the watering process which dilutes the effect.

Ooooooooooh I remember that one, CALAM - GORGEOUS. This sorta answers my question in the other post "calling for C", in which I asked to see the one hanging in the background on your castle album. Get busy.

CONCRETE: Thank you. You must not have seen my fountain surround. The first part of the whole thing was built a couple yrs. ago, and I added to it last year. Yes, the coned-shaped planters hold plants nicely. The large one on the right - on the ground - holds a Japanese Maple Tree.

So fantastic! I would love to do something large scale outside. But what a gargantuan effort. You must spend a lot of time every day mosaicking.
The result is definitely worth the time I would say!

Aboslutely awesome!!! Love the hanging planter, the colors looks so good together. I would have to do something on the smaller scale, but slow your fountain surround is breath takingly beautiful!!!! as is all your work!!

Thank you both. CONCRETE - To me this wasn't much of an effort. When you think of using whole sheets of the diamond lath, there's not much detail in making the armature, then applying the mortar - that's not REAL hard for a young person. Had I not hurt my back last summer, I'd be working on a small extension on the right side. I haven't given up yet - hope to get it done w/the help of my yard man, and the mosaicing I can do on mesh to apply. I can no longer work down on the ground. To me, this w/never be finished until the right side has a piece added.

Oh, CALAM: WHAT AN OFFER. You know what - I might just take you up on that. All I want is a giant swirl out of the mesh. I'll have my yard man put down a couple of the heavy-duty rebar to tie it to. Then I'll set about to cut out the shape b/f you get here, and you/I can mortar it. Man, what an offer!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Slow - I'm loving everything about that hanging planter, the design, colours, shape, but especially those flower petals - lovely texture and colour. Lucky you finding a whole set of those dishes!

Many thanks. I have another one ready to grout, but am hung up on the castle. Getting ready to slap on the mortar, then I'll grout the planter.
