Unless you drain the pots well in the sink after watering properly, you're going to have to have water catchers of some kind, because if the water doesn't drain out right away, the roots will rot within a day.

What I'm thinking is a large hanging planter, then slip the plant in its cheapo nursery pot with holes inside the planter. That's how we do it at work and generally no problem.

It may be worth your while to check out Watson's as well. Even though they don't have as large a selection of pots, they do have more of a variety of houseplants than VVF. Watson's is my favorite nursery. I usually hit them first before continuing up York Rd. to VVF. Their prices are cheaper too, so something else for you to consider.

I've recently started frequenting Watson's - I go by it once a week for work. I am astonished at the wide selection of houseplants I have found there - some really unusual stuff and always in perfect condition. I got a really cool spotted aspidistra a few months ago.

I used to work with someone who used to work there, and she said the guy who runs the houseplant greenhouse is really smart.

Yes! Eric is the greenhouse manager and he knows his stuff. And, he's a talented artist as well. He does all the Christmas artwork for the store. He knows a lot about orchids and just plants in general.

I would have to say that the majority of my houseplants have come from Watsons. I love going there and hearing the classical music playing in the background. The ambience is just remarkable. I've gone there to "regroup" on several occasions. And once, I went there for a plant fix at the very beginning of a snow storm(a few weeks back). I think that's when I came home with my Chlorophytum Comosum 'Hawaiian'. It was well worth it. DBF didn't think so, but he can't fully understand my love for plants. :)

I am known to frequent greenhouses in the winter to regroup and get a plant fix, as you do!

You should check out the US Botanic Garden web site - they have a tour of their production facility one day a year and it is AMAZING! 20 huge greenhouses with virtually every plant you have ever heard about and wanted to buy. It's coming up fast - March 10 - and you need a reservation, so hurry if you're interested!

I can't get onto the website. Either I have a firewall or something is wrong with their website. I would love to go on the tour. I took Friday March 9th off so that I can go to the Orchid show (Home and Garden)at the fairgrounds. This could be a very exciting weekend for me!

I did, however, google Behnkes. Did you go to the one in Beltsville or Potomac and how far is that from you? Is there any type of houseplant that they carry more of? What are the prices like?

I'm actually going to the Home and Garden show next Saturday as well. I want to visit the Hunter's Greenhouse exhibit because they carry a multitude of begonias. Very healthy and beautiful plants.

Oops, the post about Behnke's was on Mid-Atlantic Gardening; I mistakenly thought it was here on houseplants. Too many forums! I thought I had found some pots but at the last minute I realized they had pre-drilled drain holes. I'm planning to get the Valley View ones this coming week.

I go to the Beltsville one since it is closer. It is about 60 miles from Westminster. Their prices are not cheap, but the plants are impeccable, and at 25% off, I'll pay for that. My bird of paradise was $49.99 less 50%, my Phaiocalanthe orchid in bloom was $39.99 less 25%, my small red ponytail palm was I think around $5, the very nice blooming tropical hibiscus in 8" pots were $14.99 less 25%.

They had a lot of 10" to 14" tropicals - dracaenas, rubber plants, canes, selloums, birds of paradise, crotons, pretty much every houseplant there is! A small section of orchids and african violets. Lots of Phaius Tankervillae (Nun's Orchid). Anthuriums, ZZ's, a nice selection of cacti and succulents, and just about every 4 to 6" foliage plant you've ever seen and some you haven't. And I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting. It's the largest selection and square footage of houseplants I've ever shopped in - picture the greenhouse at Valley View Farms where they keep the houseplants and everything else, it's at least that big with just houseplants and maybe twice as big! I suspect the houseplants area shrinks some in the spring and summer, so go now.
