For the most part, my furniture is casual and neutral. The room next to the dining room (but not visible from the dining room) is the family room and it will hold a brown leather Ethan Allen sectional, muted orange wingback-ish chairs, and a rug with muted green, brown, gold, and orange squares. However, the orange chairs are in storage and due to some issues we had with the storage unit, they may not come out in usable shape. So the rug and orange chairs might be replaced with any variety of items in any variety of colors. Regarding metallic paint - that's not really in keeping with our style preferences. DH wants the dining room to be a dark room but I agree with johnatemp that I won't want to walk by a cave all the time. DH also had the same suggestion as creekylis -- to have the wall under the chair rail painted with the white trim paint to give the illusion of wainscoting. And I'm open to that. The walls are flat so I think that would look okay. As Les917 suggested, I think we need a rug to lighten the room a bit. I've been going through magazines and catalogs in an attempt to find a great room I can mimic but haven't stumbled upon anything that I love. But I think that we'll have a good result if we use the trim below the chair rail, chocolate brown above the chair rail, a sparkly chandelier, mirrors and lamps to create some light, and a good rug, we should be okay. I personally think it would be too much leather. We have a leather sofa ( great for kids, grown-up kids, & dogs ) but I have a mix of upholstered chairs in my den. I did not buy them all together but since I basically have used the same colors thru out my house - it works, I guess. It takes away from the look that I went & bought the set at the local furniture store at the same time. I do think it is wise to stay with a more neutral sofa - doesn't have to be solid but a nice tweed that brings all the colors together or subtle stripe/check. Then you can always bring in bolder fabrics in with your pillows & maybe one of your accent chairs. I had my pillows made with 2 fabrics so I can flip them - on the other side is a khaki linen that I use in the summer..... Smiles:)

@duane_collie makes a great point about the sunlight fading the colors. It will also fade the floors. I'd recommend some UV blinds under the sheers, that you can close when needed. Regarding the chair style, I stay away from high-armed chairs like the one you selected, because you can't really rest your arms on the chair arms if they are so high, and they can restrict arm movement while sitting in the chair. So a more tapered arm is what I would recommend. And if you want real comfort, get a matching ottoman.

The problem is that we all want recliners since currently all of our seating space is not comfortable for 4 people. I don't really like the look of bulky recliners, but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of style for comfort. I tried to go with Lazy Boy duo lines since they look like regular couches with a footrest, but they aren't comfortable nor recline all the way. The current room looks like this.
