small dark shaded by tree master bedroom needs brightening up
Comments (11)It is interesting the different perspectives that we all have re: the feeling we wish to have for a room. Still since it is a master I wonder if what you are really missing is a sense of "warmth" to the room vs the natural light. The white in a north facing dark room would be pretty dismal and not feel warm at all. I think with proper lighting and color you can create the "mood" you want with any color that speaks to you. Every single person who sees my mstr bedroom asks how I came up with the color after saying they love it but are certain they would never choose it. DH was sure he wouldn't like it but loves it too. I agree that on the chip it is questionable but in the room it creates a beautiful tranquil feeling that is warm and light at the same time. It mixes beautifully with silver tones and that adds a lot more light to the room - silver plated drapery rods, white murano glass pendants with silver leafing beside the bed over simple mirrored night stands - all help create the mood. It is an east facing room with full sliding doors that are covered with heavy silk - also light reflecting - drapes to allow sleep past 5:30 in the summer months! Light is not really an issue but as someone above mentioned we are in the room mostly at night and I don't want to feel like I am in a dark cave reading in bed at night. Anyway, I would recommend looking through inspiration photos of room here and on HGTV - figure out which ones create the mood you want for your room - avoiding any that seem require full natural light - and incorporate the colors into your room. Think about everything in the room and how it contributes to the feeling - bedding can make a huge difference. So many of the new designs incorporate silks and other reflective materials that can add to the warmth and light in the room....See MoreSofa Chaise and Chair Positions in Small Living Room - Help
Comments (0)Our living room is like this: http://imgur.com/a/mlsYT The dotted lines are area rugs. The sofa is 3 piece with chaise on the bottom left side of the image. That is a bay window on the bottom wall. The door is on bottom right and that entire right wall is is foyer/entry that we want to continue as such into kitchen. Perhaps one day with half wall / ceiling like this: [https://www.houzz.com/photos/oliver-street-traditional-entry-vancouver-phvw-vp~468274(https://www.houzz.com/photos/oliver-street-traditional-entry-vancouver-phvw-vp~468274) The bay window and sofa are both about 8.5 feet side. Another 1.5 feet on each side (to door and to wall). The opposite wall is entertainment center. The left side wall has a single window. Anyway, the image shows the sofa with chaise on the left. However, I am realizing that this only allows for 4 (maybe 5) people to comfortably seat without being on an ottoman or the floor. So I want to add another chair. Something that swivels and can be essentially opposite the chaise section. This would allow it to face the sofa/ottoman for conversation and swivel around to watch TV. Far forward and to side enough to not block anyone from sofa. It isn't ideal that it overlaps the sofa but think it should look okay? If this chair is put in while chaise is on left side again wall... well now there is a chair floating adjacent to foyer. The opposite puts it adjacent to the wall with window. This seems better but don't know. Not sure which would look and flow better. The chaise by the foyer requires walking around it. If half wall is installed then it means extending that further as well. But the chair near the window seems like a better spot than floating... ? If the chair floats near foyer it does still allow you to walk around either side since we won't put it too close to sofa. But walking in and seeing the back of the chair while it's facing TV could look awkward? Less awkward if facing sofa but still not sure. Would love opinions on this. We ordered sofa without thinking about this and now I want to make sure we figure out the best solution....See Moredark small living room
Comments (9)This reminds me of my first condo. The layout was so similar. I had a sofa and two small chairs, but I always wished I had a sectional to fill up the space and accommodate lots of seating (and laying around!) The sofa shouldn't have a very high back or too overstuffed as then it will look crowded. Plenty of large (20"x20" throw pillows will do the trick) Consider a tv easel for easy locations and optimum viewing in front of the window and a long console behind the sofa along the stairs. You still have plenty of room for a small scaled lounge chair and footstool and to have easy access to the terrace and dining room. I'm not a big fan of tiny furniture in small spaces. Less furniture but bigger is so much more functional. Large colorful art over the fireplace and over the sofa will give you the color if you can't paint. Keep the window treatment simple, like off white sheer panels, but don't skimp, they should be full and luxurious (3x the width of the window even if you keep it opened). Hope this helps....See Morevery small, odd shaped living room with no room for a couch, help!
Comments (10)Hey Mikeala, while you may have to make some compromises due to space restrictions, you can definitely fit a compact couch in the room. As @mindshift recommends, it would a good idea to keep all your furniture compact and as small as possible. I've made a couple of options for you here. (All dimensions are approximated from the images you have posted) For the first layout, I've eliminated the coffee table and added a slim console by the entrance, a wall mounted TV and an end table. You could also buy nested tables so you could stack them when they aren't being used. For the area by the staircase, I've added a tall bookcase and a couple of chairs for extra seating. adding a mirror would give a sense of a larger space, I've styled this room with modern furniture with a touch of hollywood glam. For the second option, the entrance is more open although the TV unit has been placed on the large wall. This allows TV viewing from both seating areas and yet separates the space. You may prefer this layout if you don't like the idea of having a living right at the entrance. I've styled this room with Scandinavian furniture. Do send us measurements and photos so we could further customize these for you. You could also add/ swap furniture and make your own layouts here....See Moreapple_pie_order
